Solutia Annual Reunion Is August 5

The Chemstrand/Monsanto/Solutia Annual Reunion will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. August 15 at the Tate High School cafeteria. The menu will be smoked chicken, fried fish and pulled pork with all the trimmings, including dessert and drinks.
Because of a donation by Gulf Winds Federal Credit Union, the cost is $6 per person, organizers said.
The deadline for reservations is Aug. 1. Checks should be made out to Sherry Smith, 2656 Broome Circle, Cantonment, FL 32533.

Mallory Mullis Named Escambia (Ala) Junior Miss

Mallory Brooks Mullis was named the 2010 Escambia County (Ala.) Junior Miss this weekend.
Ashleigh Elizabeth Ward was named First Alternate, and Allie Lanora Rush was named Second Alternate.

Mallory Brooks Mullis (pictured above, center) is the daughter of Debra and Ron Mullis and attends T.R. Miller High School. She is Secretary General of the South Alabama Model United Nations, a member of the Math Club, a cheerleader co-captain, participated in Relay for Life, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Kaleidoscope Editing Team, Pep Club, Spanish Club, tennis team, softball team, volleyball team, National Honor Society, and the Rural Health Scholars program. She is in the top 10 in her class, student government president for 2009-2010, student government treasurer in 2008-2009, freshman class treasurer, sophomore class representative, all state band participant, honor band participant, solo and ensemble superior ratings and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity.
Ashleigh Elizabeth Ward (pictured above, left) is the daughter of Don and Cindy Ward and attends T.R. Miller High School. She is a member of the First Baptist Church Youth Mentor and Small Groups, majorette and color guard of the T.R. Miller Band, yearbook staff, Pep Club, Spanish Club, Kaleidoscope staff, FCCLA, National Honor Society, top ten in class, SGA class representative, first chair second clarinet in the band, district honor band, Most Valuable Play in band, and a humane society volunteer.
Allie Lanora Rush (pictured above, right) is the daughter of Dru and Connie Rush and attends Cornerstone Christian School. She is a member of the Piano Audition for the Top Program, Blount Slawson Young Artist Piano Audition, Page for Lt. Governor Jim Folsom, Jr for two years, National Piano Guild, lifeguard and swim instructor at the YMCA, church praise band, President Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, 4-H Club, Church of God Teen Talent Regional winner in piano and drama, 4-H regional and state photography winner.

Both North Escambia Teams Fall Short Of State Softball Championships

Both North Escambia teams playing in state softball tournament games fell short this weekend.
Both Tri-County and Northwest Escambia remained alive in their respective tournaments after Saturday play, but both suffered losses in Sunday semifinals.
Tri-County All Stars
The 10-11 year old Tri-County All-Stars won their first game in the state tournament Saturday morning near Orlando, but fell short in their second game in the afternoon.
Tri-County beat Mt. Dora 10-2 in a Saturday morning game. Saturday afternoon, Tri-County lost 9-4 to South Tampa.
Sunday morning, Tri-County lost a semifinal game to Land-o_Lakes, 10-0.
The tournament was in Windermere, Florida, just outside Orlando.
Northwest Escambia All Stars
The Northwest Escambia All-Stars have dropped two in the 11-12 Year Old State Tournament in Coconut Creek, Fla., just north of Fort Lauderdale.
NWE lost their first weekend game to Mims from Cape Canaveral 12-3 in six innings. Saturday morning, NWE lost to Windermere 10-3.
Northwest Escambia lost 8-0 to South Tampa on Sunday, ending their state championship hopes.

Trees Reported Down In Escambia, Ala; Power Outages Across The Area

Several trees were reported to have been downed in Escambia County, Ala. and numerous residents were left without power as strong storms moved across the area Sunday afternoon.
Several trees were reported to be blocking Jordan Landing Road near Pollard following the storm, preventing people from leaving the area at the end of the roadway. A tree was also reported to be down across power lines on McBride Circle. The trees were quickly removed by the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department.
Scattered power outages were reported across northern Escambia and Santa Rosa counties after Sunday’s storms.
The storms began near Nokomis in the northwestern corner of Escambia County and marched southward and expanded through Walnut Hill, Bratt, McDavid and Molino before moving into Santa Rosa County near Chumuckla. Multiple severe thunderstorms warnings were issued on the storms, advising of winds up to 60 mph and penny size hail.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage.
Mixed Day For Two Local Softball Teams In State Tournaments

Saturday was a mixed day for two local teams competing for state softball championships. Both Tri-County and Northwest Escambia remained alive in their respective tournaments after Saturday play, but both has losses.
Going into Sunday games, Tri-County is 1-1 in state tournament play, and Northwest Escambia is 0-2.
Tri-County All Stars
The 10-11 year old Tri-County All-Stars won their first game in the state tournament Saturday morning near Orlando, but fell short in their second game in the afternoon.
Tri-County beat Mt. Dora 10-2 in a Saturday morning game. Saturday afternoon, Tri-County lost to South Tampa 9-4.
They will play Sunday in a semifinal game as second seed in their pool. Tri-County will take on Land-o-Lakes at 10 (EDT) Sunday morning.

Slow Down: Alabama And Florida Troopers Start Major Blitz Monday

Beginning Monday, the Florida Highway Patrol will team with the Alabama Department of Public Safety and the Georgia State Patrol for a joint initiative to reduce traffic fatalities while increasing safety.
During the week of July 27 through July 31, the FHP will increase patrols on the roads throughout this region as a part of the multi-state safety campaign called “Take Back Our Highways”. The campaign includes Alabama and her border states of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, and will result in an increased number of law enforcement officers on the road.
“The goal of this effort is to save lives by targeting aggressive and dangerous drivers throughout the region,” Director of FHP, Col. John Czernis said. “If you are breaking any of our traffic laws, you can expect to meet a state trooper.”
During the week-long enforcement period, FHP will use all available personnel, including members of its Aviation Section, Contraband Interdiction teams and Special Programs, as well as Auxiliary and Reserve troopers to focus on aggressive drivers, impaired drivers, speeders, and drivers who fail to buckle up.
“Every time you get behind the wheel, you have a responsibility that must be taken seriously. All drivers and passengers should buckle up, pay attention to speed limits and avoid distractions to drive safely,” adds Chief Grady Carrick, Commander of the Northern Region. “This multi-state campaign yields results, and we are proud to join Alabama and her border states in this partnership.”

Big Chill: Molino Church Builds Igloo With 700+ Plastic Jugs

Volunteers at a Molino church used over 700 plastic jugs to construct an igloo this week.
The igloo will be used in Aldersgate United Methodist Church’s Camp Edge August 3-7 from 5:30 to 8:30 each evening.
The igloo is held together with nothing but “lots of hot glue”, Sandra Greenwell, VBS organizer, said. For more info on the Camp Edge VBS, click here.

School Board Approves $635K For Jim Allen Play Area

A new covered play area and multipurpose room are on the way for Jim Allen Elementary School.
The Escambia County School Board has approved $635,000 for the facility to be constructed by Omnicon Construction of Destin. The next lowest bidder on the project was R.D. Ward Construction Co. at $638,000. The highest bid received on the project was from Jack Moore & Company at $740,000.

Pelicans Win Sixth In A Row

Dane DeValk was the best he’s been in Pensacola’s 6-0 win, keeping the Explorers scoreless in a complete game. With the win, Pensacola has claimed victory in their last six straight games.
Pensacola wasted no time jumping out to a healthy lead. In the top of the second, Marcos Rodriguez started off with a single and advanced to second when Lou Palmisano walked. Kevin Reynolds followed with a RBI single that scored Rodriguez from second, and Palmisano moved up to third. Dallas Christison batted next and lifted a fly ball to right field. The sacrifice fly scored Palmisano and the Pels led by two. Another run scored when Adam Darby hit a groundball that the second baseman booted into right field. Reynolds scored on the play and Darby reached first on the error. Antoin Gray followed with a single that pushed Darby to second, and Darby scored when Francisco Leandro picked up his second hit of the night to give the Pelicans’ a 4-0 advantage.
Adam Deleo replaced Lou Palmisano at catcher in the bottom of the second, and Dane DeValk continued to rack up strikeouts. DeValk had five when the Pelicans came to bat in the top of the seventh and added two more runs to the scoreboard. Leandro led off with his third hit of the night, and advanced to second when Burch knocked a base hit. Marcos Rodriguez grounded out to first base unassisted, but as the first baseman tried to complete the double play by throwing to second, the throw went wide. Burch advanced to third on the play, and Leandro came in to score. Adam Deleo followed by lifting a sacrifice fly that brought Burch home and the Pelicans were up by six.
Dane DeValk finished the evening by striking out eight batters and allowing just four hits and a walk. Only one Explorer ventured as far as third base on the night, as Dane DeValk improved to 4-2 on the year.
The Pelicans will look for the sweep on Sunday, as Pensacola throws Adam Brandenburg against the Explorer’s Steve Spurgeon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. and can be heard on NewsRadio 1620, or online via SportsJuice.com.
