The Northview Chiefs picked up a major District 1-1A win against Holmes County 33-19 in Bonifay Friday night. The Northview High School Chiefs (4-1, 3-1) will be at home next Friday night against Freeport in another District 1-1A game. Freeport (4-1, 4-0) is the only undefeated team remaining in the district after a 43-21 win over South Walton (5-1, 4-1) Friday night.

District 5 Member Needed For Escambia County Marine Advisory Committee

Escambia County District 5 Commissioner Kevin White is seeking someone who will be willing to fill a seat on the Escambia Marine Advisory Committee.
Interested parties should submit a resume to White’s office by Thursday. Resumes may be mailed to Commissioner Kevin White, 221 Palafox Place, Suite 400, Pensacola, 32502, or e-mailed to District5@myescambia.com.
The appointee selected by Commissioner White will serve as a committee member until November 2012. All members of the EMAC shall be residents and registered voters of Escambia County.
The EMAC explores research, provides technical expertise and makes recommendations to the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners regarding the development, administration and preservation of the county’s marine resources. The EMAC has 11 voting members and meets the second Monday of each month. Each commissioner appoints two members to serve concurrently with the appointing commissioner’s current term of office.

Trailer Hits Highway 4 Bridge

Highway 4 at Canoe Creek was closed for a short time Sunday afternoon after a driver lost control of a utility trailer hauling a pickup truck, and the trailer struck the bridge.
The accident happened about 12:45 between Bratt and Byrneville. Authorities say the driver of a Mercury Mountaineer that was pulling the trailer lost control on the steep hill approaching the bridge. That’s when the trailer spun around, hitting the bridge and the back of the Mountaineer.
The trailer was removed from the bridge a short time after the accident by an individual with a tractor.
There were no injuries in the crash. The accident is still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

Trotting For A Cure Brings Adventure Racing To North Escambia

The first annual Trotting for a Cure brought the sport of adventure racing to North Escambia Saturday to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The sport of adventure racing is sweeping the nation, a sport where just completing the race is often considering a victory.
Each of the 25 two-member teams in Saturday’s event in Molino and Barrineau Park completed a 20-plus mile course from the Don Sutton Ballpark. The course included a seven mile bicycle race from the park to the Barrineau Park Bridge, a 2.9 mile canoe trip down the Perdido River, a 3.8 mile run back to the bridge, and a seven mile bicycle race back to the park.

Along the way, participants took park in mini-challenges — everything from decorating and feeding a cupcake to their partner, to a cancer-related word scramble, to a blindfolded shoe removal maneuver to a slingshot event.
Dozens of volunteers were stationed along the way to make the race possible, and Race Director Sabrena Padgett said the race would not have been possible without those volunteers.
“I would like to especially thank all of the volunteers that donated countless hours working on this race and also our generous sponsor for their various donations,” Padgett said. “This race was a success because of each and every one of you and I appreciate you. Our efforts will be rewarded in seeing the future cures for cancer.”

Jay, Tate Bands Rated At Bandmasters Event
October 11, 2009
The Jay and Tate high school marching bands received high ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment for Marching Bands Saturday at Milton High School.
The Tate High School Showband of the South was rated superior, and the Jay High School Marching Band was rated Excellent.
Sixteen bands from Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties performed their seven minute halftime show at the event.
Go Eagles! EWMS Mini-Cheerleader Camp Held
October 11, 2009
Dozens of young cheerleaders took part in a clinic sponsored by the Ernest Ward Middle School cheerleaders Saturday. The girls spent the morning learning Eagles cheers, chants, dances, jumps and more.
The mini-cheerleaders, ages 3 to 13, will perform at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday, just before Ernest Ward’s home football game against T.R. Miller.

Century Care Center Takes Part In Corporate Cup Games

Century Care Center was among dozens of companies large and small taking part in the 16th Annual Corporate Cup Games Saturday in Pensacola.
The Corporate Cup Games are an Olympic-style, co-ed team competition in 17 great events with a focus on fun so that everyone has a great experience. The goal of the Corporate Cup Games is to celebrate health and wellness in the workplace while emphasizing team work, communication and team building, all necessary components of a healthy workforce.
Proceeds from the event benefit the YMCA of Northwest Florida.

Walnut Hill Man Named Rector Of Cantonment Church

The Rev. Milledge Baker of Walnut Hill has been named the new rector of St. Monica’s Episcopal Church in Cantonment.
After serving in the Marine Corps, Rev. Baker began working at the Monsanto Company in Pensacola where he received the call to ministry at the age of 49. He began taking college correspondence courses since he was yet too young to retire from Monsanto. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies, an Masters of Theological Studies degree, and a Doctorate of Ministry with Sacramental Emphases.
Soon after, the Baker family tried planting a sacramental church in Walnut Hill, but it was not successful. That experience led them to St. Anna’s Episcopal Church in Atmore, AL, a mission of the Episcopal Church USA in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast.
He was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal church in 2000. He then studied under the mentorship of the Rev. David McDowell-Fleming at St. Monica’s Episcopal Church in Cantonment where he was ordained into the priesthood in March of 2001. He was placed at St. Anna’s as a lay Pastoral Leader in April 2007.
He was ordained as a Transitional Deacon in the Episcopal Church USA in November 2008 and into the priesthood on June 20, 2009.
Rev. Baker is a graduate of Ernest Ward Middle School. Following graduation, he attended aviation and mechanical schools in the United States Marine Corps. He and his wife Barbara have on adult daughter, Angela, who lives in Pensacola.

Northview Gets Big District Win Over Holmes County

The Northview Chiefs picked up a major District 1-1A win against Holmes County 33-19 in Bonifay Friday night.
The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead with 9:33 to go in the first quarter on a 4-yard run from Shakel Holmes. With a good kick from Brad Lowery, the Chiefs were up 7-0 early in the game Holmes’ touchdown was a couple of plays after Northview recovered a fumbled Blue Devil snap inside the five.
Then with 2:57 in the first a 5-yard touchdown run from Ka’Daris Grice and a good kick pushed the NHS lead to 14-0.
Northview scored again with 9:09 in the second on a 5-yard Dusitin Yuhasz dash, 21-0.
NHS expanded their lead over the Holmes County Blue Devils to 27-0 with 1:03 to go in the half with another Shakel Holmes touchdown. The kick was no good.
Holmes County managed a 21-yard TD pass with 6:30 in the third to make it 27-6.
Ka’Daris Grice added another Chief touchdown from 12 yards out with just five seconds to go in the third quarter. A missed kick, and Chiefs expanded their lead to 33-6.
With 9:21 to go in the District 1-1A game, Bonifay added a seven yard touchdown run, making it 33-13 Chiefs. Bonifay managed another six from the six with just 21 seconds to go in the game. The Blue Devils came up short on a two point attemp for the final 33-19.
The Chiefs racked up an impressive 359 yards against Holmes County. Holmes had 104 yards and two touchdowns for Northview. Yuhasz gained 74 yards on a dozen carries, and Grice had 21 yards to go along with his two TD’s. La’Mikal Kyles gained 63 yards Friday night, and Jeremy Jackson had 71 yards.
On the defensive side of the Chiefs’ line, Levi Gideons had eight tackles for Northview.
