Jay Grad Takes The Field For USA Jaguars

A 2009 graduate of Jay High School is part of the first ever University South Alabama football team — a team that is now 4-0.
Dustin James, who graduated seventh in his class at JHS, is a 6-foot 290 pound member of the Jaguars’ offensive line. He is on the scout team this year, and he has had several tackles so far this season.
James earned four football letters at Jay and was twice named all-state and all-area. He lettered six times in track and field and was fifth at the state 1A meet in the shot put as a senior. He also lettered three time in weightlifting.
He is a civil engineering major who enjoys working on cars in his spare time.
James, 18, is the son of Brian and Tracy James of Jays. Brian James is a professional wrestler that once the Intercontinental champion and was a five-time tag team champion known as the “Road Dogg”.
He has two younger sisters: Amberly, 13, plays volleyball, basketball and softball; and Hanna, 6, who plays tee ball. Both attend Jay School.
Names Released In Fatal Cantonment Crash

A Navarre resident was killed in a Saturday afternoon crash in Cantonment, and four people — including a five year old child — were injured.
According to the Highway Patrol, a 1999 Saturn driven by Theresa M. Guy, 26, of Navarre, failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Kingsfield Road and County Road 97. The Saturn was struck by a 2003 Dodge 2500 pickup driven by Samuel Seeley, 63, of Cantonment. Seely and his passenger, Beverly Seeley, 61, of Cantonment, were transported to West Florida Hospital in critical condition.
Guy’s passenger, Glen D. Ashby (pictured left), 39, of Navarre, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Guy and a second passenger, Nathien Guy, 5, of Navarre, remain in critical condition in Pensacola hospitals.
The force of the impact forced both vehicle to leave the road and overturn, coming to rest on the shoulder of County Road 97.
The accident was reported at 12:30 Saturday afternoon.
The case is still under investigation and charges are pending a traffic homicide investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

NWE Midgets Beat Brewton, One Game Away From The Playoffs

The Northwest Escambia Midgets won their second straight game Saturday by beating Brewton 34-12.
Star running back Dalton Daniel saw limited playing time due to injury but still carried the ball three times for 50 yards and a touchdown.Taylor Reyes filled in for Dalton scoring on a 23-yard run; he finished the game with over 100 yards rushing.
Brannon Freeman also had a good performance with a 48-yard run for a TD, and he also finished with over 100 yards rushing. Daulton Tullis scored a touchdown on a 8-yard run, and Ryder Gifford capped the scoring off with an impressive 43-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
NWE finished with over 300 yards rushing behind the blocking of Olan Barlow, Deonte Mitchell, Matthew Lee, Hunter Sherouse, John D. Rhodes, Gavin Grant, and Zach Holland. On defense, Hunter Sherouse picked off two of Brewton passes, one of with he returned 60-yards down to Brewton’s 6-yard line.
Chasen Freeman and Brodie Amos recovered fumbles for the Eagles and also made several tackles.
Also seeing playing time were Elijah Harbison, Andrew Edwards, and Dylan Berry. NWE will take on Bellview Gold next Saturday afternoon at 3:00. With a win over Bellview, the NWE Midgets will be playoff bound.

Early Morning Fire Destroys Home

An early morning fire destroyed a home on Hilltop Road in Century.
The blaze was reported about 4:10 a.m. in the 100 block of Hilltop Road. The abandoned home was fully involved and had collapsed to the ground when the first firefighter arrived on scene just a few minutes after the initial emergency call. The wood frame structure was a total loss.
The blaze was quickly brought under control since most of the structure had burned before firefighters were called.
A natural gas line at the side of the home continued to burn while firefighters waited for a Town of Century Gas Department worker to arrive at the scene to cap-off the line. Firefighters say there was no gas service inside the home at the time of the fire. The meter had been removed and the gas line had been shut-off, but the seal was broken in the blaze.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. It was believed that there was no one inside the structure at the time of the blaze. There were no injuries reported.
The Century and McDavid stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, the Flomaton Fire Department and Atmore Ambulance responded to the call.

Portions Of Walnut Hill Without Power Early Sunday

A portion of the Walnut Hill area was without power for a few hours Sunday morning.
Escambia County emergency dispatchers said a caller reported power lines down and tree limbs on fire on Highway 97 north of Howell Road at about 1 a.m.
Firefighters from the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue were unable to locate the downed lines or a fire.
Escambia River Electric Cooperative restored power within about three hours.
The power was reported to be out in Walnut Hill from Arthur Brown Road to south of Tungoil Road, in the Oak Grove area, along South Highway 99, and in surrounding areas.

Tate Grad Captures Title Of Miss Teen Rodeo 2010

Tate High School graduate Kricket Wise was named Miss Teen Rodeo 2010 recently in Kissimmee, Florida. She also captured the coveted horsemanship award.
Wise will be officially crowned in January, 2010. Her primary job as Miss Teen Rodeo 2010 will be promoting agriculture in Florida and Florida’s western heritage and acting as the official spokeswoman for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
Wise is currently a freshman at Chipola College.

Stolen Railroad Track?

Late Saturday afternoon, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report that a portion of railroad track had been stolen from the Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway in Walnut Hill.
After walking a couple of miles of track in the area, deputies determined that none of the rail was missing, but they did find a portion of the rail had been pulled away from the track bed at the Doran Road crossing. Doran Road is small dirt lane between Pine Forest Road and Kansas Road, about two miles north of Arthur Brown Road.
Deputies did not believe anyone had actually attempted to steal the track instead, it appeared that the rail had been moved by a piece of equipment pulled through the crossing. Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway officials were to inspect the damage and make any necessary repairs.
The Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway is a short-line railroad that runs from Pensacola to Wilcox County, Alabama.

Two Prayer Services: One Focused On The Past, One On The Future

Two different prayer services — one with a focus one the past, and one with a focus on the future — were held Saturday in North Escambia.
At Highland Baptist Church in Molino, the faithful gathered Saturday afternoon for Mt. Calvary Tabernacle and Camp Meeting Day. Back in 1935, a group of faithful gathered on the shores of Pine Barren Creek to worship. They gathered under tents with sawdust covered floors to sing hymns, pray and listen to the Gospel preached.
The afternoon service Saturday, sponsored by the Molino Mid-County Historical Society in coordination with the Highland Baptist Historical Committee, include singing praises, reading from Psalm as well as prayer in the worship style of those old-time services at Pine Barren Creek.
Saturday evening in Century, community leaders, local pastors and church members gathered at Abundant Life Assembly of God. The focus of their prayer meeting was the future of Century and its citizens.
Chiefs Suffer Critical District Loss To Freeport

The Northview Chiefs lost a critical district game Friday night to the Freeport Bulldogs, 42-12.
The Chiefs racked up 271 yards at home in Bratt, 183 of those on the ground. But six costly turnovers kept the Chiefs from narrowing the score.

“We were not consistent enough to sustain our drives,” Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley said, “and that hurt us.”
“We made too many mistakes, and the defensive just did not stop them. We did a little better in the middle portion of the game, but we made those mistakes on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We are going to work on being a better team next week for Jay.”
The Bulldogs struck hard in the first quarter, taking a 14-0 lead with 8:35 to go in the first quarter. It took just five plays for the Bulldogs to put that first TD on the board. Just over a minute later, the Bulldogs had an 18-yard touchdown. for the lead.
Freeport struck again with 9:09 to go in the second to expand their lead to 21-0.
The Chiefs then recovered an onside kick for first and 10 from the their own 37. La’Mikal Kyles gained four yards to the 41. One second down, Dustin Yuhasz drove nine to put the Chiefs on the mid-field stripe for a first down. Sean Knight gained yard on first down to enter Bulldog territory with 7:36 in the half.
On third down, Yuhasz drove to the 42, followed by Yuhasz hitting the 39 for a Chief’s first down. The Chiefs continued their drive, with Yuhasz connecting with a 17-yard pass for the first NHS touchdown of the night. After a blocked kick, Northview trailed Freeport 21-6.
The Bulldogs returned kick 75 yards to the end zone, but an illegal blocking call sent them packing back to the 40. They fought their way down to the 32 where they were stopped by Steven Long on second down. With second down and two to go, Freeport fumbled, and Roderick Woods recovered for the Chiefs. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on the ball, and Freeport scored again with 7:35 to go in third making their lead 28-6.
A 35-yard touchdown run for Freeport upped their lead to 35-6 with 9:26 to go in the fourth.
The Chief’s next scoring drive came with about seven minutes in the ballgame.
From first and 10 from the Chief’s 20, Kyles gained a yard for the Chiefs, and then Yuhasz added one to make it third and six. A long gain on third down put Northview inside the Bulldog 35. Jeremy Jackson then gained half a dozen to put the Chiefs down to the Freeport 30. On second and four, a Brad Lowery pass into the end zone missed Yuhasz.
On third down, Yuhasz worked his way inside the 20 for a first down. Jackson gained three to put the Chiefs at second and seven. Another lower pass into the end zone failed to find it’s mark — Chris Sheets remained empty handed.
At third and seven, Yuhasz drove pass the Freeport defenders to reach the one. Then, from first and one, Ka’Darius Grice drove ahead a yard for a Northview TD. A missed point after attempt by the Chiefs, and Freeport was up 35-12 with about three minutes in the ballgame.
A minute later, Freeport added another touchdown and a good kick to expand their lead to final score 42-12.
On the defensive side, the Chiefs had six tackles each from Anthony Pierce, Levi Gideons, Steven Long and Shawn Knight. Austin Reid led the defense with eighth tackles Friday night.
For the offense, Yuhasz had 15 carries for 61 yards and two catches for 25 yards. He also had a touchdown. Also with one touchdown, La’Mikal Kiles had 73 yards on 13 carries and was one for one with 18 yards passing. Grice had four carries for nine yards and one touchdown.
Freeport had 375 yards against the Chiefs, 286 of those on the ground.
The Freeport Bulldogs now have the lead in District 1-1A, with a perfect district record of 5-0. With the loss to Freeport, the Chiefs’ record stands at 4-2 overall, 3-2 in district play.
Northview will cross over the Escambia River next Friday to take on the Jay Royals. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
