No Injuries In Early Morning Highway 29 Wreck

(Updated) No one was injured in a single vehicle accident on Highway 29 in McDavid Sunday morning.
The accident happened about 4:45 a.m. on Highway 29 about one mile north of Champion Drive and the sawmill. The driver of a Ford F350, Philip M. Bell of Century, lost control of his vehicle and ran off the road into the woods. Bell told troopers that he fell asleep; he was not injured in the crash. The FHP says charges are pending against Bell.
The McDavid Station of Escambia Fire-Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the accident.
The accident is still under investigation by the FHP.
Accident On Tedder Road In Century

The Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue responded to a single vehicle accident on Tedder Road.
The accident happened about 6:55 about a half mile from Highway 4. The Florida Highway Patrol says Lisa K. Lyons, 35, of Atmore, lost control of her 1997 Ford Explorer in an “S” curve and hit a small embankment. Lyons was transported to Atmore Community Hospital with minor injuries.
Lyons told the FHP that the inside compartment of the vehicle begin to fill with smoke from the dashboard, which caused her to lose control the vehicle. She was not charged in connect with the accident.
The Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS also responded to the call.

Tate Aggies Claim First Miracle Bowl From Northview Chiefs

The Tate Aggies claimed the first ever Miracle Bowl Saturday afternoon with a 41-27 victory over the Northview Chiefs to end Tate’s best season in 13 years.
Proceeds from the game will benefited the Miracle League of Northwest Florida, a baseball league for disabled and special needs persons that plays spring and fall at the Mitchell Homes Miracle League Park on Nine Mile Road.
The Class 1A Northview Chiefs, under first year Coach Sid Wheatley, finished the regular season a 7-3 record, a huge improvement over last year’s 2-8 season. The Tate Aggies were 7-3 this season in Class 4A. Both teams finished third in their respective districts; one loss away from a trip to the state playoff series.
The Aggies were first on the board at Pete Gindl Stadium in Cantonment following a Northview turnover. That gave the Aggies a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
With 8:44 to go in the second quarter, Tate added seven more with 50-yard touchdown from senior Qudarius Ford. Then to round out the half, the Aggies struck again, with a four yard pass to Abe Hutcheon to make it 21-0 heading into the lockers.
In the third, the Aggies scored again with 5:34 in the quarter to expand their lead to 28-0.
But the 1A Chiefs were not going to be shut out by the 4A Aggies. Late in the third, La’Mikal Kyles had a 34-yard touchdown run for Northview. After a good kick from Brad Lowery, the Chiefs were on the board, trailing Tate 27-7 with 2:59 in the third quarter.
Tate scored again in the third after Josh Dees broke free from a host of Chiefs for a 35-yard touchdown run. A kick through the uprights, and Tate held a 34-7 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Darius Michael, a junior, started the fourth quarter with a 60-yard touchdown for Tate; the Aggies were up 41-7. Then Jeremy Jackson added a touchdown for the Chiefs. A missed point after, the Aggies were on top 41-13.

Northview continued their fourth quarter scoring run with a Roderick Woods (pictured above) touchdown with 2:19 to go in the game. Then, with just 40 seconds on the clock, the Chiefs were in the end zone again freshman Roderick Woods hustling for another six.
In the end, the 4A Tate Aggies claimed the Miracle Bowl with a 41-27 win over the 1A Northview Chiefs.

Cantonment Juniors Claim Gulf Coast Youth Alliance Football Championship

The Cantonment Juniors won the Gulf Coast Youth Football Alliance championship Saturday night at Pensacola High School.
The Cantonment Cowboys beat Ensley 34-0. The game was called with 6:59 to go under the mercy rule.
During their three game championship bid, the Cantonment Juniors only allowed one touchdown against them. During those three games, the Cowboys scored a total of 88 points.
The one TD allowed by Cantonment came during last’s win last week over Pensacola 24-6. In the first game of the three week championship series, Cantonment beat Myrtle Grove 30-0.
Truck Goes Over Guardrail In Highway 97 Crash

The driver of a pickup truck escaped injury Saturday night when he went over a guardrail and into a ditch in a single vehicle accident in Walnut Hill.
The accident happened in the 3900 block of Highway 97 just north of Hendricks Lane about 8:50 Saturday night. The driver said he hit water on the roadway, hydroplaned and slammed into a guardrail. His Chrevrolet Silverado pickup then went up and over the guardrail, landing against a power pole in a ditch. A telephone company junction box was also heavily damaged in the crash.
The adult male driver refused to be transported to the hospital.
Rain is believed to have been a factor in the accident; it was raining moderately at the time of the crash. The original 911 emergency call came from a nearby resident that heard but could not see the accident.
The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Atmore Ambulance responded to the call.
The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Jay Royals Compete In State Track Meet

The Jay High School Boy’s track team finished 18th in the state Saturday.

People from across the area had the opportunity to enjoy Art at the Farm Saturday in Walnut Hill.
The annual event features art, crafts, foods like homemade gumbo and taco soup, pony rides and more. Event organizers said the event was successful, and the rains held off until after the event.

Atmore Dentist Found Dead From Gunshot Wound

The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of Atmore dentist who was found dead from a gunshot wound in his home Saturday.
Dr. Thomas Alvin Rice, Jr., 54, was discovered dead at his residence in the 3600 block of Highway 31 in Nokomis late Saturday afternoon. Rice died from a gunshot wound, according to Escambia County (Ala.) Chief Deputy Mike Lambert. Officials are not currently saying if foul play is suspected in Rice’s death; they are awaiting autopsy results from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Mobile.
His death is still under investigation by the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Department.
Dr. Rice was a 1982 graduate of the Unversity of Alabama. He has held an active dental license in Alabama since June of 1982, and has practiced dentistry at 111 East Ridgely Street in Atmore for a number of years.
Highway 97 Repaving To Begin After Thanksgiving Weekend

Work is set to begin the week after Thanksgiving on a $5 million resurfacing project on Highway 97 from Molino to Alabama that will take about 10 months to complete.
The entire 22.5 mile length of Highway 97 will be repaved from County Road 95 in Molino across Highway 29 to the Alabama state line. No major drainage changes are expected to the route’s 55 cross drains under the highway, with the exception of some possible changes near the intersection of Highway 97 and Crabtree Church Road. There will also be new and replacement guardrails installed along the state highway.
“They will probably start with some isolated drainage work,” according to Tanya Branton, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation. “There should not be any major lane closures in the first few days.”
Once work begins on the actual highway, work crews will restrict traffic to one lane through the work zone. Weather permitting, the project should be completed in September 2010.
“They will maintain accesses to businesses and residences during the process,” she Branton said.
Existing 12 foot wide travel lanes and five foot paved shoulders will be milled and resurfaced. This project does not include the four-laning of Highway 97. A four lane highway is not in any of the state’s current plans for Highway 97.

Middle, High School Girls Can Join Youth Volleyball

Middle and high school girls had the opportunity to learn about club and training volleyball at a Friday night meeting at Northview High School.
Northview’s volleyball coach, Betty Heaton, is looking to organize youth volleyball in the North Escambia area.
“The observation by coaches in the area is that there are girls that are interested in playing club volleyball, but that driving distances for club teams in Pensacola and Mobile have prohibited them from playing,” Heaton said. “We are interested in starting a club team and/or training team in the North Escambia Florida and surrounding Alabama areas.”
Club Volleyball is used to help players gain more experience playing volleyball. Club Volleyball will give players interested in developing their volleyball skills a chance to practice and play volleyball with a variety of coaches and teammates.
Training Team is a non-tournament club volleyball team. The goals would still be the same as a club volleyball team but they would not travel or play in tournaments. This would provide the players with the chance to practice and improve their skills.
