Photos: How To Build A Snowman
February 15, 2010
Lots of people across the area tried their hand at building a snowman Friday.
Some resembled the character Frosty, some looked like little space aliens and some were even cats and dogs. We had pictures of little ones, eight and a half foot tall ones, and even a little snowman family.
In a special photo gallery, we are looking back at snowmen as built by NorthEscambia.com readers.

Missing Elderly Man Found Safe
February 14, 2010
An elderly Cantonment man has been found safe, about 21 hours after he was reported missing following a funeral in Alabama.
Escambia County (Ala.) Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Clyde Rufus Carroll, 78, was located at about 10:30 this morning on Alger Road north of Butler Street in Escambia County, Alabama, about 20 miles from Wallace where he was last seen.
Lambert said Carroll had driven down a dirt road to an oil well just south of I-65. When he turned around, he ran the van he was driving into a ditch, nearly rolling the van onto it’s side, Lambert said said. Carroll was cold, but otherwise appeared to be in good condition. He was transported by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton to be evaluated.
Carroll volunteers for Faith Chapel Funeral Home in Cantonment. He was last seen about 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a funeral in Wallace, about 20 miles north of Flomaton. It appears that he took a wrong turn when he left the funeral in the Faith Chapel van.

$2.3 Million Awarded To Molino Woman After Ivan Cleanup Crash
February 14, 2010
A Molino woman who crashed into a Hurricane Ivan cleanup trailer in 2004 has been awarded $2.3 million by an Escambia County jury.
Penny Nixon, now 42, received the damage award Friday in Escambia County Circuit Court against contractors Ashbritt Inc., of Pompano Beach, and Gulf Sandblasting and Painting, Inc., of Mississipi.
Nixon rear-ended heavy equipment trailer on November 2, 2004, on Jacks Branch Road. The trailer was parked in the road without lights or reflectors, cones or other safety markers while crews were busy loading dump trucks with debris.
The trailer was operated by Gulf Sandblasting and Painting which was working as a subcontractor for AshBritt, Inc.
Evidence introduced during the five-day trial showed that Nixon had permanent brain damage caused by the accident that prevented her from working or finishing nursing school.
Penny Nixon’s name was Penny Packer at the time of the crash, but she married Charles Nixon, Jr. in 2008. Her lawsuit was filed in June, 2005.

Thousands Enjoy 2010’s Winter Wonderland
February 13, 2010
It was a winter wonderland to remember for thousands in South Alabama and extreme northern Northwest Florida Friday with the first snowfall in 14 years. For many, it was their first glimpse of the white stuff, which varied from a wet sticky mess in North Escambia to a fluffy white powder in Monroe County, Alabama.
Unofficial snowfall totals across the area ranged from a light dusting to about 1 inch in Florida, to about 2.5 inches in Atmore, to 3 inches just north of Atmore to over 5 inches in Monroe County.
The low snowfall totals in North Escambia led many Florida folks to hit the highways and travel north into South Alabama. At the Atmore campus of Jefferson Davis Community College just north of I-65, there were more Florida tags than Alabama late Friday afternoon. Dozens of snowmen stood around the campus as several snowball fights took place — including one between a handful of Ernest Ward Middle School students.
North Escambia’s snowfall made national news as Florida became the 49th state in the U.S. to have snow on the ground. Only Hawaii had no snow on the ground Friday, as two-thirds of the land mass in the United States was white.
Dozens of people stopped alongside Highway 21 just south of the Escambia-Monroe County line to take advantage of a big hill and the chance to do a little snow sledding. The impromptu — far from the Winter Olympics event — was fast-paced 40 foot slide, and often head-over-heels-tumble into a fluffy snow pile below. The snow-sledders took advantage of whatever they could find in their vehicles to slide, from car mats, to cardboard to trash bags.
Over three dozen traffic accidents were reported Friday in Escambia County, Alabama — many sightseers that slid into ditches.
In Escambia County, Florida, sleet and snow was reported as far south as downtown Pensacola.
