Elm Street Reopens

Elm Street in Century reopened to traffic Tuesday. Work began about three weeks ago to replace a culvert under the street. According to Mayor Freddie McCall, Elm Street opened with a temporary road surface that will be paved at a later date. NorthEscambia.com photo, click to enlarge.
Hack Hits Twitter

Security experts warned of a hack that was impacting visitors Tuesday morning to the popular short-message service website Twitter.
The malicious tweets, sometimes appearing as blocked-out text, spread and cause numerous popup windows to open. The hack created its mischief when a visitor moves their mouse over an infected page — visitors were impacted without ever clicking the tweet link.
Now, Twitter Trust and Safety team leader Del Harvey said the hack called “XSS attack” has been identified and repaired.
“The XSS attack should now be fully patched and no longer exploitable,” Harvey said in a tweet.
Third party Twitter clients, such as those on cellular phones, were considered safe from this attack.
Cantonment Man Dies After Pensacola Traffic Crash

A Cantonment man died Monday after a traffic crash in Pensacola that was attributed to a medical compilations.
Roosevelt Strong, 71, was pronounced dead at Sacred Heart Hospital following the 8:49 a.m. crash at Diego Circle and Massachusetts Avenue, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Due to unspecified medical complications, Strong lost control of his 1993 Chevrolet van and hit a wooden fence, the FHP said.
A passenger in the vehicle, Jerome Davis, 56, of Pensacola, was not injured.
Century Approves Budget With Half Million Increase

Monday night, the Century Town Council approved a 2010-2011 budget with over a half million dollars in increasesand increased ad valorem tax rate for the next fiscal year, which begins October 1.
The town’s total budget is $3,337,231 — an decrease over the 2009-2010 budget of $4,587,744. The difference is due to a one-time $1.83 million grant for a water infrastructure project during the last fiscal year. The new budget represents an increase of $579,487 over last year’s budget minus the water grant.
Outside of the grant-funded water project, the town’s biggest source of revenue — $1,825,000 — is from water, gas and sewer charges, and the biggest expense is $1,464,178 to pay for the costs associated with providing the water, sewer and natural gas service for the town’s residents.
Ad valorem taxes will increase slightly — from .823 mils last year to .9048 mils. The new millage rate is estimated to generate $30,000 for the town during the 2010-2011 budget year, compared to $26,000 in the last fiscal year.
The budget passed 4-0 with council member Henry Hawkins absent from the budget public hearing Monday night. No members of the public spoke for or against the budget.

Century Manhunt Turns Up Empty

Authorities failed to find a suspect that ran from an Escambia County deputy Monday afternoon in Century.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a disturbance on Old Flomaton Road near Lake Street about 1:20 p.m. When the first deputy arrived on scene, a black male in black shorts and white shirt was seen running into a wooded area.
The suspect reportedly had an outstanding arrest warrant on an escape charge.
Deputies established a perimeter around the area and called in a K-9 team from the Century Correctional Institute. The dogs were reportedly able to trace the suspect for some distance, but they were unable to locate him.
Further details were not available.
High School Volleyball: Flomaton Defeats Northview

The Northview Lady Chiefs fell to the Flomaton Lady Canes Monday at the varsity and junior varsity level.

Varsity
The varsity Chiefs dropped three games to Flomaton, 24-26, 20-25, 15-25.
“Tonight’s game wasn’t what we were hoping it would be. We are still working on consistency in our play. We need to continue to work on our serving and serve receive. Once those two are fixed, I believe we will see a different ending in our games,” NHS Head Coach Betty Heaton said.
Senior Shawna Montgomery had a dozen kills, three aces, six blocks and four digs for the Lady Chiefs. Kara Hardin, a senior, added three aces and three digs, while sophomore Morgan Payne had three kills, two digs and a block.
The Lady Chiefs are 3-9 overall, 2-1 in district play. Northview will play their first regular season home games Thursday against Freeport. The junior varsity will take to the court at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.
Junior Varsity
Flomaton defeated Northview in two junior varsity games, 18-25, 17-25.
Freshman Madison Arrington had one ace, one kill and two aces. Lana Clayton added three kills and four assists for the Lady Chiefs.
The JV Lady Chiefs are 1-6.

One Critically Injured In Flomaton Wreck, Airlifted To Hospital

One person was seriously injured in a single vehicle accident Monday afternoon near Flomaton.
An adult female was airlifted in critical condition to a Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola following the crash. Three other adult females in the vehicle sustained only minor injuries, according to emergency personnel.
The driver of a SUV apparently lost control and overturned several times on Highway 31 near Wolf Log Road.
The Friendship and Flomaton fire departments, Flomaton Police Department and Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office were among those that responded to the accident. Further details were not available; the accident is still under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.

18 Middle School Students Named Take Stock in Children Scholars

Eighteen seventh grade students have been introduced as the newest Take Stock in Children scholars. Take Stock is a statewide program that operates locally under the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation.
Two of the students attend Ernest Ward Middle School — Amber Freeman and Carly Ward. Amber hopes to attend Florida State University and become a wildlife biologist. Carly hopes to attend the University of West Florida and become a hospital administrator.
In all, there were 108 Take Stock in Children students in grades 7-12 who will receive a Take Stock in Children four year tuition scholarship when they graduate from high school, as long as they maintain good grades, have a record of attendance and display good citizenship, as well as remaining crime and drug free. Donations from community businesses, organizations, individuals and foundations are used to purchase scholarships using matching funds from the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. The program includes weekly meetings at school with a community mentor.

Jay Lady Royals Top Among Santa Rosa Schools In Cross Country Meet

The Jay High School Lady Royals placed first among all Santa Rosa County Schools in the 39th Annual Wildcat Invitational cross country meet hosted by Washington High School this past weekend.
Santa Rosa teams finished as follows: Jay, 12th; Gulf Breeze, 14th; Pace, 15th; Navarre, 16th;, and Milton, 17th.
The top five runners for Jay were Allison Blair (23:09), Leely Trevino (23:06), Robin Blackman (23:27), Caristyn Golden (24:12), and Jessica Thornton (25:04).
The Lady Royals are scheduled to take part in a cross country meet Tuesday afternoon at Northview High School with the Chiefs, Baker and Escambia Academy.

Register Now For Chief Challenge 5K Run/Walk

The First Annual Chief Challenge 5K Run/Walk is coming to Northview High School.
The event will be held Saturday, October 2 at 8:30 a.m. at the school campus in Bratt. “The course is not your typical 5K race. It includes a variety of terrains and challenging hills around the campus,” according to event organizers.
