Tate High Head Football Coach Ed Rigby Resigns
January 27, 2012
Tate High School head football coach Ed Rigby submitted his resignation Thursday following a winless season.
“I can confirm that I spoke to Coach Rigby today and he has resigned his position as head football coach,” Tate High Principal Rick Shackle said Thursday afternoon. “We are certainly very grateful for his commitment and dedication and wish him the very best.”
Shackle would not confirm if Rigby would remain at Tate in any other position.
The application process to replace Rigby will be immediately, the principal said, following district guidelines.
Rigby has been at Tate six seasons, with a 22-39 overall record. He took over the Tate program in 2006, becoming the Aggies’ third coach in just eight months. He led the team to the playoffs in 2008, their first appearance in eight years and just their third playoff appearance since a 1980 state championship.
The Aggies were 0-11 in 2011.

Texting While Driving Ban Moving Along In Senate
January 27, 2012
A bill to ban texting while driving passed a Senate committee on Thursday but may be stalled in the House.
The proposal would allows law enforcement officers to tack on a ticket for texting to motorists pulled over for other offensives driving offenses. Drivers would face a $30 fine with a second offense costing $60 and three points under the measure that was approved 14-1 by a Senate Transportation Budget Subcommittee with Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale voting against it.
The bill faces a tough road in the House, where at least one key subcommittee chairman, Eucheeanna Republican Brad Drake, opposes a ban. Three House bills are bottled up in his committee.

Driver Dies From Injuries Received In Clay Pit Accident
January 26, 2012
A man critically injured after being pinned under a SUV deep in a clay pit Sunday night has died.
The Florida Highway Patrol said 24-year old Benjamin T. Hillard of Pensacola passed away at 1:57 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
The incident was reported about 7:25 p.m. Sunday in a wooded area near the intersection of Success Drive and Power Boulevard in the Central Commerce Park off Highway 29 in Cantonment.
The FHP said Hillard was off-road driving on a no-name dirt road when his SUV became stuck in the mud. The SUV rolled backwards and overturned down an embankment. Hillard was ejected as the vehicle crashed about 50 feet into the clay pit below. The Chevy Tahoe came to rest on top of Hillard, pinning him underneath.
Rescuers were able to reach Hillard by about 7:40 p.m. A rope rescue team was dispatched to assist in the removing the him from the clay pit. Hillard was removed from the clay pit and transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital as a “trauma alert” about 8:15 p.m.
The Cantonment, Molino, Brent and Osceola stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.

Molino Man Charged With Using Chair To Attack Girlfriend
January 26, 2012
A Molino man is charged with felony battery after allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a wooden chair.
John Carl Nellums, 36, allegedly threw the chair across the kitchen of the Molino Road apartment he shares with his live-in girlfriend. The 45-year old victim told Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies that Nellums had been drinking all day Sunday and began arguing with her. She said he picked up a wooden dining room chair and threw it at her with all of his strength. Due to a previously broken and jagged edge on the chair, the victim said her thigh bled profusely after being hit by the chair. She was left with a deep tissue wound, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.
The victim said she was unable to get up off the floor for about 30 minutes. When she did get up to drive herself to the hospital, Nellums told her that if she did not let him go with her, he would “burn the house down”, according to an arrest report.
Nellums, who was previously convicted of aggravated battery in 1996 and pleaded no contest to another felony battery charge just five days before the incident, was booked into the Escambia County Jail without bond.
Photo: The ‘Welcome To Florida’ Sign Says Gov Scott Is A What?
January 26, 2012
Those souvenir photos in front of the “Welcome to Florida” sign on Highway 29 at the state line in Century have been a little more interesting for over a month, thanks to a vandal.
A little spray paint transformed the official greeting to “Governor PRick Scott”. According to Webster’s dictionary, the word “prick” is defined as “a spiteful or contemptible man often having some authority”. (And a note to the little boys and girls: While the word is only sometimes vulgar, it’s still not considered a polite word to use.)
Despite calls reporting the graffiti to the Florida Department of Transportation, the sign has been proudly politicizing about the governor since at least the middle of December.
