Hundreds Almost Lose Water Service
June 24, 2012
Hundreds of local families and a handful of businesses came within a few hours of losing their water service Saturday.
Central Water Works reported Saturday afternoon that their well on Killam Road had completely failed and was undergoing emergency maintenance. Officials feared that water stored in an elevated tank at the Killam Road well would be depleted prior to the completion of the repair — leaving about 500 customers without water.
But the well was reported to be repaired by about 5 p.m., with the elevated storage tank still about one-quarter full.
Central Water Works has a second well and elevated storage tank in McDavid, but due to elevation water from that well can’t flow past about the water company office on Byrneville Road.
The Killam Road well serves Central Water Works customers in Byrneville, Poplar Dell and north into Alabama including portions of Old Atmore Road and Clearview Road, and customers on Highway 4 from Byrneville to about Williams Road in Century.

Funeral Services Set For First Responder Killed In Traffic Crash
June 24, 2012
Funeral services have been set for a first responder killed in a traffic accident Thursday afternoon south of Jay.
Visitation for 22-year Nathan L. Berry of Flomaton will be held Monday from 6-9 p.m. at the Flomaton High School Auditorium. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m., also at the Flomaton High School Auditorium.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Berry was northbound on Highway 89 north of Pineview Church Road on a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle when he struck the left rear wheel of a mower implement attached to a 2005 John Deere tractor. The tractor, driven by 45-year old Grady Lane Faris of Brewton, was also northbound on Highway 89, partially on the paved side of the roadway and partially in the northbound travel lane.
Berry was transported from the scene to by AirHeart helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola where he later died. Berry was wearing a helmet, according to the crash report.
Charges against Faris are pending the outcome of an investigation, according to the FHP.
Berry, a certified firefighter and paramedic, dedicated his life to serving the public in emergency services. He was a former employee of Atmore Ambulance and was currently a supervisor for Lifeguard EMS in Santa Rosa County. He was a volunteer member of the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department near Flomaton, and was a firefighter for Escambia County Fire Rescue’s Century Station.
Friends said Berry was returning home after working an EMS shift. He is survived by his wife, the former Tiffany Hanks of Bratt, 14-month old daughter Anna Claire and an unborn son Mason.

Man Charged With Selling Stolen Jewelry
June 24, 2012
A Cantonment man was jailed after allegedly selling jewelry stolen in Brewton to a Pensacola gold buyer.
Jimmy L. Johnson, age 42 of Pine Top Lane, was charged with felony dealing in stolen property and giving false information to a secondhand dealer, both felonies.
Brewton Police had developed Johnson as a suspect in the theft of jewelry from a home on Douglas Avenue in January 2012, including several gold items and wedding ring. On the day of the theft, Johnson allegedly sold the items for $905 to The Gold Exchange in Pensacola.
The victim positively identified the items and paid The Gold Exchange $905 to reclaim her property, and warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest.
Johnson was booked into the Escambia County Jail on the outstanding warrant and later released on a $20,000 bond.
Wahoos Get 6-4 Win
June 24, 2012
Yordanys Perez delivered the hit of the game with a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth which gave Pensacola their first lead of the game on their way to a 6-4 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, TN, on Saturday night. Blue Wahoos starter Kyle Lotzkar labored through the first two innings before getting back on track to work five innings and qualify for the win.
The Lookouts got to the Blue Wahoos starter early. Rafael Ynoa led off the bottom of the first with a base hit. He then stole second and later scored with one out on a double from J.T. Wise. A batter later, Brahiam Maldonado hit his third home run of the year to put the Lookouts ahead 3-0.
After Beau Mills singled home Josh Fellhauer in the fourth, the Lookouts quickly answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning to push their lead back to three.
The Wahoos turned the game around in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Perez drove a ball to the right-center field gap clearing the bases and putting the Wahoos in front for the first time 5-4. Perez tried to stretch his double into a triple but was thrown out at third for the second out of the inning. The next batter, Mills, blasted his first home run of the season for Pensacola making it 6-4 and that’s how it ended.
Mills finished with a 3-for-4 game including a home run, two RBI and a run scored in his Blue Wahoos debut. Perez (2-for4, 3 RBI) and Fellhauer (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI) each contributed with multi-hit games also.
Lotzkar ended up with the win after allowing all four Lookouts runs on five hits over five innings. The right-hander also fanned seven batters with four walks. Drew Hayes and Curtis Partch each worked a pair of scoreless innings to close it out. Partch finished it off over the last two innings to earn his third save of the season. The Wahoos did all their damage against Chattanooga starter Matt Magill. He was saddled with the loss after getting tagged for six runs on nine hits over five innings.
The series continues on Sunday when the Blue Wahoos send RHP Daniel Corcino (3-4, 3.34) to the mound against LHP Aaron Miller (4-4, 4.12). First pitch is set for 1:15 p.m.

Copter Finds Potted Pot Behind Molino Man’s Home
June 23, 2012
A 59-year old Molino man was charged after deputies discovered that he was growing marijuana in his backyard and that he had a stash in a freezer.
Johnnie Ray Darby of the 4000 block of Saunders Lane was charged with producing marijuana, a third degree felony.
An Escambia Sheriff’s Office helicopter air unit located about 10 marijuana plants growing in pots behind Darby’s residence Thursday afternoon, according to an arrest report. A water hose led from the plants to Darby’s residence and power had ran from the residence to the area of the plants, the report states.
Darby gave deputies consent to search the inside of his residence. Deputies reported finding a quantity marijuana stored in his freezer and in a back office of the home.
Darby was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $1,000 bond.
