November 11, 2019

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a Snapchat scam targeting teenage girls.

According to the ECSO:

The victims receive text messages from an individual posing as one of their “friends”. This person advises they are locked out of their own Snapchat account and request help logging in using the victim’s account information. The victim believes this is one of their friends and provides their own personal information. After the person logs into the victim’s account they immediately gain access to the victim’s personal information and pictures. The suspect then locks the victim out of the app by changing the password. The suspect then sends the victim text messages demanding money via CashApp or their private pictures will be posted on the account’s public page.

“There has been at least one victim that has sent money. The victim was allowed access to the account for a few seconds before being locked out again. The individual demanded more money and the victim refused. This victim and the other victims had private photographs posted on their accounts by the suspect, so they could be viewed publicly. The victims received screenshots proving this was done. The victims were requested to FaceTime this individual and perform sexual acts.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the ECSO at (850) 436-9620.
