Northview FFA Holds Annual Banquet (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview High School FFA held their annual banquet Friday night.
The event included a somber retirement ceremony for three of the chapter’s graduating senior officers as they slowly removed their signature FFA blue jackets for the last time.
The night also included many awards for Northview FFA members and supporters. The Northview High School FFA has been continuously honored as a top chapter in Florida and the nation.

Byrneville Elementary 5th Graders ‘On Trial’
May 13, 2017
Fifth grade students from Byrneville Elementary School had the opportunity to visit the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Center on Friday to learn about the judicial process.
They were able to meet with Judge Scott Duncan and see how trials work, learn the differences between criminal and civil and more. They also had the chance to see holding cells, a visiting judge’s chambers, meet with court reporters and learn how they type so fast and view the surveillance cameras.

Inspirational Student Hero Awards Presented

Cox Communications recently its annual Cox Inspirational Student Hero Awards at the University of West Florida Conference Center.
Cox recognized 46 students from Escambia County who have overcome extreme challenges in life to serve as an inspiration to their teachers, administrators and fellow students.
The students were chosen by a committee of leaders at their school. During the event, Cox presented the students with an engraved medal and certificates of honor.

In 1987, a group of teachers at J. M. Tate High School created the Mira Awards to recognize talented and creative students in the arts and sciences. The following year, the committee approached the Foundation to bring the awards under its umbrella and to initiate county-wide student participation each year in the areas of writing, performing and visual arts, and other creative disciplines. The term “Mira” is Latin for the name of the brightest star in the constellation Cetus.

Pen Wheels Disabled Fishing Rodeo Held In Walnut Hill

The 43rd annual Pen Wheels Fishing Rodeo was held Saturday in Walnut Hill.
Over the history of the fishing rodeo, it has been held at locations ranging from Ft. Pickens to the Three Mile Bridge in Pensacola. Since 2001, it has been held at Jantz’s Catfish Pond on South Highway 99, just off Highway 97.
Dozens of volunteers stood ready Saturday to help the disabled. They baited hooks, tossed a line and offered words of friendly encouragement, while dozens of disabled people were registered in Saturday’s fishing rodeo. They were from around the area, including Pensacola and Century.
The Pen Wheels Fishing Rodeo is provided to the disabled for free as a project of the Pensacola Fiesta of Five Flags organization.
