5K Runs/Walks Saturday Morning in Atmore, And At Perdido Landfill

Saturday morning, there will be 5K  run, bike or walk in Atmore, and the annual Dump Dash and Trash-a-Thon will be held in Cantonment.

Atmore Relay for Life 5K Run/Walk/Bike
The Atmore Community Hospital Relay for Life team will hold a 5K run, walk or bicycle on Saturday  at 8 a.m. beginning at the back of the  hospital near the helicopter pad. Register prior to the race — $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and up, ages 9 and under are  free.

Dump Dash and Trash-a-Thon

Escambia County Solid Waste Management Division is hosting the Perdido Landfill’s “Dump Dash” Saturday morning at 13009 Beulah Road in Cantonment. The Dump Dash will consist of a 5K walk/run, a Trash-a-Thon, food and activities for the whole family. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. and the Trash-a-Thon begins at 10 a.m. Proceeds benefit the United Way of Escambia County.

The Trash-a-Thon consists of an obstacle course assembled for child participants. Free food and drinks will be served, as well as a nature walk and bounce houses. Prizes will be offered for runners, best male and female walkers, fastest teams and fastest overall male and females.

Registration is Saturday morning prior to the events.

Walnut Hill VFD Fish Fry Is Saturday

The Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department’s 43rd Annual Catfish Fry will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Walnut Hill Fire Station on Highway 97.

Plates will be $7 each with your choice of catfish fillets or grilled chicken, plus baked beans, cole slaw, hush puppies, homemade bread and cake. There will also be drawing for door prizes beginning at 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the fish fry are used to provide assistance to displaced fire victims in the area.

The Northwest Florida Blood Center Bloodmobile will also be on hand for a blood drive.

Frost Advisory For Tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for tonight for the North Escambia area. With a temperature in the mid 30’s, frost is possible during the early morning hours. Precautions should  be taken to protect tender vegetation.

One Suspect Apprehended In Lottery Store Murder

(Updated 1:55 p.m.) One person is in custody in connection with  the shooting death of the 75-year old owner of the State Line O’ Yes Lotto on Highway 97 in Davisville Tuesday afternoon, and authorities are continuing their search for a second suspect.

Malcolm Troy McGhee, Jr. was arrested during the early morning hours Wednesday after a search warrant was executed at a home in Escambia County, Alabama.  McGhee is being held awaiting extradition back to Florida to face charges in connection with the incident.

Authorities continued their search for a second suspect throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday.

The victim was found behind the counter Tuesday suffering from a gunshot wound about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was identified as Thomas “Tommy” Kroll, the longtime owner of  the small bright pink-colored store known for selling numerous winning Florida lottery tickets just yards from the Alabama state line. The store is one of the top lottery retailers in Florida.

Deputies said two tall and thin males wearing ski masks and blue jeans  entered the store armed with a handgun and attempted to rob Kroll. Kroll was shot and killed “after an exchange of gunfire”, the Sheriff’s Office said. The suspects fled in an unknown direction following the shooting. K-9 units from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Century Correctional Institution were unable to locate a track on the suspects. No further description of the suspects was available.

Numerous law enforcement officers from Florida and Alabama surrounded the store and scoured the area following the shooting looking for the suspects as investigators questioned several potential witnesses.

Investigators have not said what, if anything, was taken during the robbery.

1:20 p.m. Voters are reporting no line, no waiting at several of the rural precincts in North Escambia. Precincts are typically slower this time of afternoon until people begin to get off work.

Noon – During the previous hour, many North Escambia precincts reporting short waits of just a few minutes, some no waiting. Precincts often get a little busier during the noon hour and people vote with time off for lunch.

11:00 a.m. Don’t forget you can still download a sample ballot at EscambiaVotes.com if you are an Escambia, Florida, voter. You can read and study the amendments in advance and save yourself some time at the poll with the three page ballot. We also published an amendment guide (click here) explaining each one in detail.

10:10 a.m. Smooth and steady…No major problems being reported at the polls in the area this morning, and the lines to vote continue to be steady. Don’t forget your photo ID…that will slow you down and you’ll vote a provisional ballot.

8:20 a.m. About a 20-30 minute wait to vote reported in Jay this morning.

8:10 a.m. Voters in Beulah reporting a wait of about an hour to vote this morning.

8:00 a.m. Voters in Walnut Hill reporting about a 40 minute wait and an unusually long line inside the building. During the primaries, voting in Walnut Hill was pretty much walk in, walk out.

7:15 a.m.. Polls are open. Reports of longer than usual line at polling places across the area. At the First Baptist Church of Bratt, the parking lot was packed with early morning voters (pictured above).

Election Day Tips For Escambia Voters

Supervisor of Elections David H. Stafford is offering Escambia County voters some tips to prepare for tomorrow’s Election Day:

• Confirm the location of your polling place prior to Election Day: check your sample ballot, voter information card, EscambiaVotes.com, or call 595-3900.
• Several precincts and polling places have changed due to redistricting and precinct consolidation, so be sure to know where to vote on Election Day.
• If you are unsure of your registration status, check EscambiaVotes.com, e-mail us at soe@escambiavotes.com, or call 595-3900.
• If you need to update your address, contact us prior to Election Day so you can be directed to your proper polling location.
• Photo and signature ID is required for all voters – if you do not present an approved form of ID, you may vote a provisional ballot.
• The ballot for the General Election is a multi-page, multi-sheet ballot, and includes 11 constitutional amendments and a referendum for city voters.
• Be sure to review your sample ballot prior to Election Day in order to familiarize yourself with all of the contests. A sample ballot was mailed to voters, and you can view your sample ballot online at EscambiaVotes.com.
• Voters are encouraged to study and mark their sample ballot and bring it with them to the polls to expedite the voting process.
• Registration books closed on October 9 – new registrations for this election may not be made at the polls.
• You may not return your voted absentee ballot to your precinct on Election Day – it must be returned to the Elections Office by 7:00 p.m.
• If you requested an absentee ballot but chose not to return it and wish to vote at your polling place instead, please bring your ballot with you so it can be cancelled.
• Early voting ended Saturday – if you have not yet voted or did not request an absentee ballot by October 31, you must go to your designated precinct on Election Day.
• Busiest times at the polls tend to be 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., during lunch, and 4:30 p.m. until the polls close at 7:00 p.m.

Veterans Day Programs This Week At Northview, Ernest Ward

Veterans Day program are scheduled this week at Northview High and Ernest Ward Middle schools.

Northview High

Northview High School will hold its annual Veterans Day program on Wednesday, November 7 in the school theater. Identical programs will be held at 9:35 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  The guest speaker will be Captain Carl Mock, United States Navy, retired.  Captain Mock is the former commanding officer of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) located at NAS Pensacola. He  served 38 years before retiring in June 2005.  All veterans, their families and community members are invited to attend.

Ernest Ward Middle

Ernest Ward Middle School will hold its annual Veterans Day program at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 8 in the school gym. The public is invited, and a special invitation is extended to veterans in the community. The event will feature guest speaker Albert Hunninghake from Walnut Hill, patriotic music and presentations. Refreshments to follow.
