Wahoos Win 7-2 Over Biloxi; Arquette, Williams Homer
September 11, 2026
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos bounced back with a win on Thursday night over the Biloxi Shuckers. Led by a stellar start from Luis Moreno and bombs from Aiva Arquette and Max Williams, the Wahoos ended on top 7-2.
For the first time in the series, the Blue Wahoos struck first. After Jaron DeBerry (L, 8-9) set down the first five Wahoos in order, Ethan O’Donnell wore a hit-by-pitch with two outs in the second inning. Payton Green followed that with a run-scoring double into left field. One pitch later, Emaarion Boyd singled into right field, plating Green and putting Pensacola up 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, Aiva Arquette had a rude greeting for DeBerry by launching his 10th bomb of the year into Pensacola Bay. It was not the first time Arquette had taken DeBerry deep, he hit a solo bomb off of him back on August 11th as well. Arquette now has six hits in nine at bats against the Biloxi starter in his career.
With a 3-0 lead, Luis Moreno (W, 7-7) blinked in the 4th. Matthew Wood sent a solo home run halfway up the scoreboard in right field to make it a 3-1 game. The only other blemish for Moreno came in the 6th inning when Andrew Fischer obliterated his 47th home run of the season into right. The home run marked a milestone, giving Fischer the most homers by a minor leaguer since Ryan Howard hit 46 in 2004.
Before Fischer could etch his name in history though, Max Williams continued his hot streak with a 439 foot two-run blast in the 5th. The homer was his 5th in 6 games with Pensacola.
A 5-2 lead wasn’t enough for the Wahoo offense, so they added two more runs in the bottom of the 8th. With Cristian Hernández on second and Payton Green on first, they both took off stealing. The throw was to second base, but ended up in center field allowing Hernández to score. Dylan Jasso dinked a single off the glove of third baseman, bringing Green home and putting the Wahoos up 7-2.
Nigel Belgrave entered in the 7th inning and put all nine batters he faced away in order, sealing his team-leading 10th save of the year. The Wahoos improved their record to 78-56 overall and 42-23 in the second half. Biloxi fell to 64-67 and 29-37. If Pensacola can win two of their final three games, they’ll finish their regular season with the best record in franchise history.
The Blue Wahoos continue their series against the Biloxi Shuckers on Friday night.

Walk Audits To Evaluate Century Crosswalks, Sidewalks And Mobility
September 11, 2026
Volunteers gathered Thursday evening as work continues on an AARP Community Challenge grant project to assess local pedestrian safety and accessibility.
Over the coming weeks, the volunteers will conduct walk “audits,” looking at routes and safety, in areas that include East Hecker Road, around Dollar General at East Hecker Road, and near Food Giant. Small groups will walk these areas and take notes at various times on different days.
During the audits, volunteers will assess crosswalks, traffic speeds, sidewalks, signage, lighting, shade, and seating availability.
The results will be presented in a final report to the Century Town Council in December.
The initiative is funded by a $2,500 grant through the nationwide AARP Community Challenge program. The project aims to identify barriers to mobility, document walking conditions, and highlight future infrastructure improvement opportunities for the town, with a special focus on residents age 55 and older. The grant funding covers the study itself, while any future physical improvements will remain at the discretion of the town council.

Update: West Roberts Road Expected To Reopen Saturday
September 10, 2026
A portion of West Roberts Road that was temporarily closed for construction on August 29 is expected to reopen on Saturday, weather permitting, but it won’t be the end of the project.
Work is continuing on roadway reconstruction for the $4.6 million West Roberts Road Roadway and Drainage Improvements Project.
New lane closures began August 29 on the project, and Escambia County said West Roberts Road between Tate Road and Highway 29 was expected to reopen after Labor Day weekend, but that is now set for Saturday.
Once the full road closure ends, intermittent lane closures will continue along West Roberts Road. Weather permitting, the entire project is expected to be completed by “winter 2026,” the county said Thursday, a change from a previous fall estimate.
Residents, pedestrians, local traffic, and emergency vehicles will have access to properties within the work area at all times; however, there may be short periods when a driveway or entrance is temporarily blocked as equipment and materials are moved during construction.
The project will widen the roadway to two 12-foot-wide travel lanes with 5-foot-wide shoulders from Pine Forest Road to Highway 29. The roadway from the southern turn to Pine Forest Road will be resurfaced and striped.
The $4,635,298.30 project, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), was awarded to contractor C.W. Roberts Inc.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier Files Suit Against Netflix In Tech Crackdown
September 10, 2026
Attorney General James Uthmeier’s push against major tech companies is expanding to include Netflix.
He filed a lawsuit against the entertainment streaming company Wednesday, claiming it violated state law by telling consumers it wouldn’t track and sell their data to advertisers, and that it’s keeping targeting children to keep them “tethered to the screen.”
The lawsuit, filed in the 7th Judicial Circuit in St. Johns County, details how Netflix told consumers for years it didn’t track user data, before switching to sell their subscribers’ information to advertisers.
“Netflix’s representations that it would remain ad-free, refrain from collecting and integrating user data, and design kids profiles to protect children were made at the highest levels of the company,” the lawsuit states. “But behind the scenes, Netflix was accumulating years of consumer data and building the behavioral-surveillance infrastructure that it would ultimately deploy for its advertising business in November 2022.”
For Uthmeier the lawsuit is part of his efforts to combat large technology companies that have failed to ensure protections for consumers, especially children.
“This lawsuit is about parents, because it’s parents who should oversee the privacy of their kids, not a big tech company that’s profiting despite public safety,” Uthmeier told reporters in Miami. “Parents, not streaming corporations need to direct the upbringing of children.”
The lawsuit comes one day after Uthmeier said he’ll push for new laws to put criminal penalties on artificial intelligence companies whose products abet in crimes. He’s already investigating OpenAI for how the alleged gunman who killed two and wounded five at Florida State University last year used its ChatGPT product to carry out the shooting.
A lawsuit against Roblox, an online gaming platform, over its alleged failures to protect children from sexual predators, is also pending. And Uthmeier didn’t sign on to the recent settlement with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, making Florida one of the only states not included in the settlement. Uthmeier said the protections Meta is pledging to put in place for teenage users aren’t enough.
In March, Uthmeier said his office will investigate the messaging platform Discord over concerns the company was allowing children to be groomed by predators. And in April 2025 he sued Snap, Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, a popular messaging platform, for violating a new state law barring social media companies from including design features to keep users scrolling.
Uthmeier also chided Netflix for using “tricks” to keep kids on their platform.
“If a company is going to be monitoring every single click and scroll and swipe then you need to put people on notice,” Uthmeier said. “We do not want them creating addictive features for kids.”

ADEM Backs $1.4M Overhaul To Fix Flomaton Wastewater Compliance Violations
September 10, 2026
The Town of Flomaton is moving forward with a major overhaul of its wastewater system to correct ongoing treatment issues and address state regulatory compliance.
Backed by financial assistance through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the proposed project carries an estimated total cost of $1,423,200.
Flomaton’s wastewater treatment facilities have struggled to consistently meet standards for E. coli and total suspended solids (TSS) removal, resulting in ongoing enforcement actions for non-compliance.
The planned improvements aim to overhaul critical infrastructure to better handle waste loads and reduce overflows. Work will include replacing floating aerators, completing various facility repairs, and rehabilitating collection lift stations with new pumps, controls, piping, and security fencing.
ADEM determined the project meets the criteria for a categorical exclusion from further environmental review, allowing the town to proceed toward construction to modernize its collection network and improve discharge quality at the treatment plant.
