Escambia Man Sentenced For Selling Machine Gun Conversion Devices On Facebook

September 15, 2026

An Escambia County man has pleaded guilty to selling machine gun conversion devices on Facebook.

Alaisjah Perkins, 23, of Pensacola, Florida, was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for possessing unregistered firearms.

According to court documents, Perkins used a 3D printer to print machine gun conversion devices for AR-15 rifles and then sold them on Facebook. The device inserts into an AR-15 rifle and converts it from semi-automatic to fully automatic, according to federal prosecutors. An undercover ATF officer purchased 12 conversion devices from Perkins on two occasions before obtaining a search warrant for his home, where they found the 3D printer, printing material, and 13 additional devices.

During the execution of a search warrant at his home, officers located tools and supplies for manufacturing MCDs. Upon his arrest, a bag containing 13 MCDs was found in his pocket. The devices were sent to the Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for technical examination. Experts determined they were designed to convert AR-style firearms from semi-automatic to fully automatic.

This case was a joint investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the ATF.

Applications Open For Pine Beetle Assistance And Prevention Program

September 15, 2026

Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program for non-industrial, private forest landowners Applications will be accepted through October 9 from 44 northern Florida counties, the known range of the southern Pine Beetle. The area includes Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Small, private forest landowners are the backbone of our state’s forest industry,” said Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson. “By providing assistance to forest landowners to strengthen their pine timber against this destructive pest, this program helps protect Florida’s natural resources and economy.”

The southern pine beetle is one of the most economically devastating forest pests in the Southeastern United States, with periodic outbreaks destroying thousands of acres of pine timber. Recent outbreaks in Alabama, Georgia, and other neighboring states have resulted in devastating timber losses.

“Southern pine beetle activity has remained relatively low in Florida in recent years,” said Rick Dolan, Director of the Florida Forest Service. “Active forest management can both protect individual stands and reduce the risk of widespread outbreaks.”

The Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program, supported through a grant by the U.S. Forest Service, provides incentive payments for landowners who have overstocked pine stands and need to conduct a first thinning. In addition, it offers partial cost reimbursement for activities that can mitigate southern pine beetle activity, such as prescribed burning, mechanical underbrush treatments, and the planting of longleaf or slash pine rather than loblolly pine, the beetle’s preferred species. All qualifying applications received during the submission period will be evaluated and ranked for approval.

To obtain an application or to learn more about the Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program, visit: FDACS.gov/SPBPrevention.

Applications and more information are also available from Escambia County Forester Cathy Hardin at (850) 587-5327 or by email Cathy.Hardin@FDACS.gov. In Santa Rosa County, contact County Forester: Ashlee White at (850) 626-3028 or email at Ashlee.White@FDACS.gov.

Molino Community Center, Library, Museum To Close Sept. 19-26 For Restoration of Vintage Floors

September 14, 2026

The Molino Community Center, including the Molino Library, will be closed from Saturday, September 19 through Saturday, September 26, for restoration of the building’s vintage floors.

The Molino Community Center was originally constructed as the Molino School in 1939. In 2012, the historic school building was renovated and repurposed as the Molino Community Center, which now also houses the Molino Library, an auditorium, meeting spaces, and the Molino Mid-County Historical Society Museum.

The building retains its original antique heart pine wood flooring, a defining historical feature. The last restoration date of the flooring is unknown, and its current condition reflects decades of wear and deterioration, according to Escambia County. Existing deficiencies include extensive surface wear, rusted nail heads protruding through the walking surface, inconsistent and deteriorated finish, and areas where the wood has become excessively worn and thinned, requiring selective replacement.

In July, the Escambia County Commission approved $31,872 in Local Option Sales Tax funds to Troendle Hardwood Floor Company to complete the repair and restoration of the floor.

The Molino Library will be closed during the process, along with the museum and rentals of the auditorium and meeting spaces.

The Escambia County Tax Collector and Escambia County Property Appraiser offices are in different buildings to the south of the main community center and will remain open, as will Escambia Head Start in a building to the north.

Other West Florida Public Library locations across Escambia County will remain open.
