Tate Beats Fort Walton 62-58 In Regional Quarterfinals

Tate beat the Fort Walton Beach Vikings 62-58 Thursday night for a Region 1-5A quarterfinals win, the first for the Aggies since 2002.
The Aggies (20-8) were down by a point with 13 seconds on the clock when Shermone Jones hit a three-pointer to put Tate up 60-58. Fort Walton missed and fouled, putting Dylan Anderson on the free throw line. Two good shots, and the Aggies had their big win.
At the end of the half, the Aggies were down 26-23. But they can came out shooting in the third quarter, outscoring Fort Walton 21-10 for a 44-36 headed into the fourth.

All-Star Cheerleaders To Compete

The Panhandle All-Star Cheer Team will perform Saturday at the Orange Beach Nationals.
The All-Stars, which include girls from across the area, recently placed second in the Saltwater Championship All-Star Level 2 that was held at the Pensacola Civic Center.
The 22 team members will take part in Saturday afternoon’s competition at the Wharf in Orange Beach.
Team members are: Samantha Bethea, Kamryn Brock, Qumesha Brown, Chasity Burt Fatimah Carter, Tiffany Chavers, Sierra Dortch, Kaile-Anne Gumapac, Dajionae Hetherington, Jarelle Hooks, Keyvinana Johnson, Trinity Johnson, Dinesha Jones, Shaniqua Jones, Shaquanna Jones, Jamia Newton, Lizzy Nicholls, Skye Nolan, Danielle Suggs, Raylin Wesley, Tatyanna White, and Tylia White.
Coaches are Tara Jones, head coach and director; Sharon Robinson, assistant coach; Rene Dortch-Wesley, assistant coach and administrator; Kanisha Knight, junior assistant; and Shakeria White, junior assistant.

NHS Softball Opens Season With Wins Over Atmore; Plus Tate, Jay, NHS Scores

Northview 19 Escambia County 4
The Northview Lady Chiefs opened their softball season Tuesday night with a 19-4 win over the Escambia County High School Blue Devils.
Northview had eight hits, while Atmore had three. Amy Clarke was 2-3, Candice Greenwell had a double, and Emily Vickery had a triple for the Chiefs.
While softball season is often associated with spring, NHS Assistant Coach Sammy Day said the game was anything but spring-like, with the temperature at 33 by the end of the game.
Northview 18 Escambia County 1 (JV)
The JV Lady Chiefs opened their season with a strong 18-1 win over Escambia County High School of Atmore.
Key offensive leaders were Ashton Gibbs with two hits, Morgan Payne with a double, Tori Reid with a double, and Taylor Byrd with a triple. Shaquanna Jones pitched a no-hitter for two innings and struck out six Atmore batters. The next game for the JV team is at Jay this Friday.
Jay 9 Pace 8
The Jay Royals opened their season with a 9-8 softball win over Pace in an extra-inning game.
Nine inning pitcher Alicia Ashworth; she drove in the winning run with a two out single for the win. Ashworth allowed eight hits and had six errors during her complete game on the mound.
Amber Steadham was 5-5, with one run and a couple of RBI’s. Olivia Wright has three RBIs and two runs for the Royals.
Niceville 4 Tate 3
Niceville handed Tate a 4-3 loss Tuesday. Shelby Myers had two runs and two RBIs. Heather Schaff was 2-4 with one RBI for the Aggies.
BOYS BASEBALL
Pensacola High 11 Northview 7
Northview opened their season with a loss to Pensacola High on Tuesday, 11-7. The Chiefs opened with one in the first inning, but Pensacola High answered with two runs in the second and eight in the third.
Tate 4 Escambia 0 (JV)
The Tate JV team beat the Escambia Gators 4-0. The Aggies will play Niceville Wednesday night.
Tate Wins District Championship

The Tate Aggies are the District 1-5A champions after a 49-46 win Monday over Milton.
The Aggies were down 19-15 at the half, but Tate outscored Milton by dozen in the third. Tate rallied in the second half for the win. Krys Walden led Tate with 22.
Tate will be at home against Fort Walton at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Region 1-5A quarterfinals.

EA Lady Cougers Reach Elite Eight, Out Of Tourney

The Escambia Academy Lady Cougars made the Elite Eight of Alabama Independent School Association Elite Eight, but their state basketball championship hopes were ended by Autauga Academy.
The Cougars fell to the Autauga Generals, 40-27. The Generals held a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter at Huntington College in Montgomery. But the Escambia Academy Cougars came back in the second quarter to tie the game 15-15 at the half. The Generals outscored the Cougars by a two to one margin in the second half for their 40-27 win.
Rachel Fuller led the Lady Cougars with 11 points, plus 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Amber Huskey had 7 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals. Jordan Jaye added 5 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals. KayLeigh Miller had 2 points, 1 rebound, 3 steals. Grayson Emmons had 2 points, two steals. Samantha Lee, Lacie Flowers, Paige Allen and Carlie Broughton had 1 rebound each.

Jay Falls In District 1-2A Semifinals; Tate Beats Pine Forest

The Jay Royals were beat by the Bakers Gators Saturday in the District 1-2A tournament semifinals at Freeport, 51-48.
The Gators were up by 17 with under four minutes to go when the Royals rallied to come within four. The Royals had an impressive 14-point run as they tried to close the gap in fourth.
The Jay’s Hunter Boutwell missed a chance at a 3-pointer that would have tied the game with 10 second in the game. Boutwell paced the Royals with 17 points, including five 3-point shots.
The Royals finished their season at 11-14.
Tate 65 Pine Forest 63 (OT)
Tate beat Pine Forest 65-63 in overtime Saturday in a District 1-5A boys basketball semifinal game.
Tevin Brown led the Aggies with 24 on the board, including a dramatic overtime game-winning layup with eight seconds on the clock.
Tate will play Milton at 7 p.m. Monday for the District 1-5A boys basketball championship.
McDavid Resident Aids PJC In Win
February 14, 2010
McDavid resident Weston Winters, aided Pensacola Junior College baseball in another victory against Pearl River Saturday night.
Winters was called in to pitch for Pirates when the score was 0-3, bases loaded in the top of the first inning. Winters pitched 6 innings, allowing only one run.
PJC finished with a 14-4 win over Pearl River. Winters was selected as player of the game by Gulf Coast Sports Radio.

The Northview High School Competition Cheerleaders and the Ernest Ward Middle School Competition Cheerleaders are in Orlando, for this weekend’s national championships.

The Northview team did not attend last year’s competition, while the EWMS cheerleaders brought home a national title last year.

Tate Beats Pace In Preseason Baseball

Tate beat Pace 3-2 in a preseason baseball game Thursday night at Gulf Breeze High School.
The game was tied going into the top of the fifth inning when CT Bradford singled followed by a single by David Casey. Trent Higgenbothem hit a sacrifice fly to score Bradford to make it 1-0 Pace.
In the bottom half of the figth Tevin Padgett doubled to left center. David Lee moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Lee Hunter walked. Padgett scored on a pass ball and then Adam Mack singled to bring in hunter to make it 2-1 fort the Aggies.
The top of the seventh Zach Etheridge walked followed by a walk to Bradford. Casey singled to load the bases. Higgenbothem hit an infield single scoring Etheridge to tie it up 2-2. The bottom of the seventh Tate’s Lee hit the first pitch over the right field fence for a walk off home run as the Aggies beat the Patriots 3-2.
Royals Win Round One In 1-2A Tourney

The Jay Royals won the first round of the District 1-2A Tournament in Freeport Tuesday, 58-40. Bugg Fischer paced the Royals (11-12) with 19 and had seven rebounds.
