The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles ended their 2011 season with a down to the wire win over the Excel Panthers Tuesday night, 20-14.
The Eagles took an early lead over the Panthers with a Desmone Knight touchdown. With a missed two point conversion pass to Warren Suggs, Ernest Ward held a 6-0 lead with 7:18 to go in the first quarter.
Excel held the lead with just four seconds on the clock as the Eagles drove to down to the Panther’s six yard line. On the last play of the game, Knight was in for a 6-yard touchdown and an Ernest Ward win.
The EWMS Eagles (4-2) were scheduled to travel to Baker next week to take on the Gators, but that game has been canceled.

Agrait Finishes Third In Triathlon

Jorga Agrait of Jay finished third in the recent Sea Turtle Triathlon Loggerhead Divison on Opal Beach near Navarre.
Each of the girls in her 11-12 year division swam 150 yards, biked three miles and ran one mile. Coming out of the water after the triathlon opening swim, Agrait was at the back of the pack. She caught a few competitors in the three mile bike, but poured it on and gained serious ground in the one-mile run. In the one-mile, she had the fastest time, allowing her to finish before all but two of 17 competitors.
Agrait is a member of the Jay High School Lady Royals Cross Country team.

Jay, Washington Win JD Mac Invitational; Tate, West Florida Place

Washington and Jay high schools took the top spots in the team results Saturday at the J.D. Mac Cross Country Invitational in Jay.
Boys
Washington High took first in the boy’s team results, with West Florida placing third and the Tate Aggies in sixth.
The top male runner was Jacob Kotick of Washington with a time of 16:20, followed by Ryan Larson of Washington (16:24:08), Alec Clark of West Florida (16:24:94) and Harrison Edwards (16:33) of Washington.
Top male runners for West Florida were: Austin Sortino (17:12), Marcus Slade (18:25), Darrin Qualls (18:29), Hunter Sport (18:35) and Garrett Diamond (18:37).
Top male runners for Tate were: Thomas Simmons (17:33), Daniel Keely (19:41), Austin Halfacre (19:48:57), Luke Barnhill (20:25) and Garrett Summitt (20:32).
Girls
For the Jay Lady Royals, it was the first win at the meet they host at the Bray-Hendricks City Park. West Florida placed fourth, while Central High placed sixth.
For the Lady Royals, Jessican Thornton (21:03) placed third, while Jorja Agrait (21:36) placed tenth. Other Jay Lady Royals in the top 20 were Allison Blair (22:17), Ally Settle (22:18) and Savannah Brown (22:30).
Top female runners for West Florida were: overall female winner Kaysi Roberts (19:14), Raleigh Nesbitt (22:01), Miranda Wiley (22:09:54), Hanna Moore (23:32), and Danielle Turner (23:42).
District Standings: Northview, West Florida Up; Tate Down

District rankings are beginning to shape up in the North Escambia area.
In 1-1A, two teams are 1-0 in the district, Freeport and Northview. Both teams are sitting it out with a bye this week, preparing to meet in Bratt in an October 21 game likely to determine district champs. Baker and Jay are 0-1 in the district after falling to Freeport and Northview, restrictively, last Friday night.
The stars of District 1-5A are the West Florida Jaguars so far this season. The Jags are no longer that team you schedule for an easy homecoming win. At 6-0, the WFHS is having the best season in school history, and they are the only team undefeated at 2-0 in the district.
In 1-6A, Pensacola high has the only perfect 2-0 record in the district, while Pace and Milton are both 2-0. The Tate Aggies are at the very bottom of the district at with a 0-6, 0-3 record.
Results And Photos: Second Chief Challenge 5K Run/Walk

About 120 runners and walkers took part in the second annual Chief Challenge 5K Saturday morning at Northview High School.
The overall fastest male was Northview sophomore Isaac McGahan (19:43) and the fastest overall female runner was Northview junior Georgia Goetter (23:46).

“My goal is to hook the first time walkers and runners into the great thrill of crossing the finish line. Most likely, their first race won’t be their last,” said Natalie Nall, event organizer. “My mother started five years ago and now at 71 she’s addicted to 5K runs. I feel exercise is her greatest motivator in beating breast cancer and positive outlook in life. It’s never to late or too soon to start exercising.”

West Florida Beats Gulf Breeze

The West Florida Jaguars defeated the Gulf Breeze Dolphins 38-35 Friday night. With the win, the Jag improved to 6-0, the best record ever in the history of West Florida High School.
In the first quarter, West Florida scored a 4-yard run from Jalen Jones and Antawn Carter returned an interception 31-yards for a touchdown. The Jaguars rounded out the second half with a 59-yard pass from Kayle Faxlanger to Jonathon Harris for a touchdown.
Faxlanger hit Ty Peasant with a 62-yard touchdown pass in the third and Lawerence Lee with a 59-yard pass in the fourth.
Leroy Beats Flomaton 14-13

The trip to Leroy was a heart-breaker for Flomaton Friday night as the Hurricanes saw their hopes of a perfect season dashed, faltering from a 13-0 halftime lead to lose to the Bears 14-13.
Flomaton scored with a 75-yard touchdown on toss from Jacob Newton to Neiko Robinson in the first quarter, and a Ryheem Dixon pass to Austin Patterson for a 15-year touchdown in the second.
Leroy (4-3, 4-1) came back to win, adding 14 in the second half.
The Hurricanes (6-1, 4-1) will host Millry next Friday night in Flomaton
Northview Beats Jay 56-7

The Northview Chiefs beat the Jay Royals 56-7 Friday night in Jay in the district-opener for both teams.
For Northview quarterback Brandon Sheets, it was a good six-touchdown kind of night — scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter on runs of 9, 73, 10 and 30 yards. His first TD of the night was set up by LaMikal Kyles with a 55-yard run to Jay’s 9-yard line. Sheets’ 73-yard touchdown was perhaps the play of the night — with Jay closing in behind the line of scrimmage, he recovered his own fumble, and ran a lengthy back and forth tour of the most of the field on the way to the end zone.
“He can obviously make something out of nothing a lot of times, and that’s what he did tonight,” Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley said of Sheets’ performance. “He’s such a threat to run the ball also.”
Sheets scored again on a 14-yard run in the second and found Austin Albritton with a 5-yard pass. In the third Andrew Farrow was in for Northview on a 7-yard touchdown run, and Kyles returned a fourth quarter kickoff 80 yards for the Chiefs’ final touchdown of the night.
Jay’s lone score came with a block punt from the Chiefs’ 19 returned by Justice Garcia in the third quarter.

Sheets accumulated 166 yards for Northview, while Jay’s Ricky Cofield picked up 113 yards.
Northview was coming off a touch loss last week to 5A Gulf Breeze, and Wheatley said the focus of practice all week had been district game number one.
“Tonight was a great start for us. I challenged them to play 48 minutes with a lot of hunger, a lot of desire and just a passion for football,” Wheatley said the win for Northview (3-2, 1-0). “I told them what we are playing for — our future — depends on our district schedule.”
The Chiefs will be off next week, and Wheatley said it will be a good week of practice followed by “game mode” the following week as Northview prepares for District 1-1A foe Freeport at home in Bratt on October 21.
“Those guys are going to play hard, they are awfully well coached,” Wheatley said Freeport. “It’s going to be a challenge, but I really thing our kids are going to get up for it.”
The Jay Royals (2-4, 0-1) will travel to Cottondale next Friday night.

Milton Beats Tate 35-17

The Milton Panthers defeated the Tate Aggies 35-17 Friday night in Milton.
Things got off to a rough start for Tate, as the Aggies fumbled the second play of the game which led to a Milton touchdown an early 6-0 lead.
Tate scored in the second quarter with a 31-yard field goal from Hagen Mancuso with 2:47 to go in the half. The Aggies added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter with a 42-yard pass from David Moorhead to Sameul Lavantai. Tate scored again with 3:34 to go in the game with a touchdown from Jalen Cunningham.
Tate (0-5, 0-3) will host Pensacola High School next Friday night in Cantonment.
