Vet Students Donate Pet Oxygen Masks To Escambia Fire Rescue

The Pensacola State College’s Veterinary Technology Program presented Escambia County Fire Rescue with five sets of pet oxygen masks Monday.
The masks were donated by students in the class.
Veterinary Technology Program Director Sarah Meyer-Paterson made the presentation to Escambia Fire Rescue Captain Craig Ammons at the PSC Warrington Campus.
“We have been very fortunate to have used these several times in the past with great success,” Ammons said. “This will replace where our people have been very creative and used water bottles and oxygen tubing. So this will help out tremendously.”

Revolutionary War, Siege Of Pensacola Hero Galvez Named Honorary U.S. Citizen

Monday, Congressman Jeff Miller presented the UWF Historic Trust Board of Directors with the official documentation conferring Honorary Citizenship to Gen. Bernardo de Galvez, a Spanish military leader who led his forces against the British during the Siege of Pensacola in the American Revolutionary War. Galvez joins Sir Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa and just five others to become the eighth person to earn honorary citizenship in the United States. The documentation will be housed at the T. T. Library Friends To Hold $5 Blowout Book Sale

The West Florida Public Library will hold a $5 Blowout Book Sale on the this Saturday.
Attendees can pay $5 for a brown paper bag and stuff it will all the books that will fit. There’s no limit to the number of bags that can be purchased.
Contributions will be used to support the West Florida Public Library’s efforts to build community and improve literacy.
The sale will be Saturday, January 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Florida Public Library Main Branch at 239 North Spring Street.
Eagle Scouts Complete Extension Service Garden Projects

The Escambia Extension Service Horticulture program recently benefited from Boy Scouts Troop 36 Eagle Scout projects. Peighton Dortch Named Miss NHS 2016 (With Photo Gallery)

Peighton Dortch was crowned Miss NHS 2016 Saturday night at Northview High School.
Maddi Weber was named first runner-up, while Jadlyn Agerton was named second runner-up from among 18 contestants.

Escambia School Board Declares ‘National FFA Week’
January 20, 2016
Tuesday night, the Escambia County School Board approved a resolution declaring National FFA Week for February 20-27, 2016.
“(FFA) is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young people by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career successthrough agricultural education at the local, state, and national level,” the resolution stated .
FFA members, advisers and administrators from Tate, West Florida and Northview high schools were on hand as the school board unanimously approved the resolution.

Century Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr’s Legacy (With Photo Gallery)

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was celebrated across the area Monday.
In Century, a “Keep the Dream Alive’ birthday celebration was held at the Century Community Center. Guest speaker Evangelist Letitia Griggs told the crowd to look beyond the dream, look beyond the one man who had a dream and look toward Jesus regardless of race.

Blue Wahoos Kick Off Reading Program At Jim Allen Elementary

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos kicked off their second year of Kazoo’s Grand Slam Reading Program at Jim Allen Elementary School last Friday morning. Blue Wahoos staff members and Kazoo, the team’s mascot, acted out the beloved baseball take, “Casey at the Bat,” to get students excited about reading.
The program will be presented over the next few weeks at schools throughout the Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.
Kazoo’s Grand Slam Reading Program is designed as an incentive to excite and motivate students while developing a lifelong love for reading. Students in grades 3-5 are asked to read four books of their choosing during a four week period. Every student in the program receives a Blue Wahoos gift and all classrooms with 100% participation will be entered into a drawing to win a free classroom trip to a 2016 Blue Wahoos home game.

Farm Day 2016 Planned For February 4

UF/IFAS Extension and Alabama Cooperative Extension will present Farm Day 2016 on Thursday, February 4 at the Grace Fellowship Church at 1412 East Nashville Avenue in Atmore.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Topics will include economic outlook, row crop disease control, corn price protection, insects that plague and more. Lunch will also be provided.
