Escambia Changes Animal Tethering Laws

April 23, 2010

The Escambia County Commission Thursday night approved an ordinance amendment that would restrict how and when dogs can be tethered in the county.

The ordinance will require dogs to have a shelter large enough to stand up, turn around, lie down and stretch comfortably.

Tethering of animals over six months old will be allowed, if the ordinance is approved, if the animal is within eyesight of the owner and the tethering system is at least six feet long, below 1/16 the weight of the animal and fitted with a proper collar. The animal can not be tethered during extreme weather or while it is sick.

Tonight’s The Night For The Lady Chiefs

April 22, 2010

nhs-vs-wfhs-045.jpg

Today will be a really good day for Northview High Softball Coach Sammy Day if his Lady Chiefs can beat Baker for the third time this year.

The No. 1 seed Lady Chiefs (23-3) will face the Baker Gators(15-7) at 6 p.m. for the District 1-2A championship.  No. 2 Baker advanced to the finals with a 10-8 win over Freeport Tuesday afternoon.

It will be the third time the two teams have met this year — Northview has beat Baker twice this season, 13-1 and 8-0. The Gators are hungry for a district win; they have won the district crown three years running.

“It’s going to be tough. It’s really hard to beat a good team three times in one season. We are going to have to play the best game we have played all year,” Day said.

nhs-jay-026.jpgNot only will Baker need to overcome an all-around tough Lady Chief’s team, they will also need to deal with a freshman on the pitcher’s mound. Misty Doran, 14, is 17-3 on the season and a perfect record in the district. She even pitched a no hitter against Ponce de Leon.

With a win Thursday night, the Lady Chiefs will be home for the regionals, a loss would put them on the road.

“We want to win the district championship; we want to play at home,” Day said.

Members of the Lady Chiefs are Aimee Clarke, Kolbi Cobb, Candice Greenwell, Amber McMillan, Miranda Burkett, Ashley Digmon, Kara Hardin, Shaniqua Jones, Sarah Killam, Shawna Montgomery, Hayley Simpson, Emily Vickrey and Misty Doran.  Manager is Brook Schlobohm. Head coach is Sammy Day, and Assistant coach is Bobby Simpson.

State Plans Highway 29 Changes; Learn More At Tuesday Meeting

April 19, 2010

The Florida Department of Transportation is in the process of developing an Action Plan for Highway 29 from Burgess Road to the Alabama State Line. The plan is being developed in coordination with Escambia County, the Town of Century and the Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization.

An Action Plan is a planning tool developed by FDOT for Florida Intrastate Highway System (FIHS) roadways to address congestion and access management standards in coordination with local government, transportation planning organizations, and community members. FIHS facilities are vital transportation components of Florida’s economic stability and growth. The Action Plan is a dynamic tool that needs updating on a periodic basis. The Action Plan examines existing traffic conditions for the study corridor and intersections. Future traffic forecasts are developed to identify road and traffic operational deficiencies along the corridor.

Additionally, environmental constraints, land use constraints, and safety issues are also reviewed. The Action Plan includes an improvement plan to address short-term and longer-term (20-year) corridor deficiencies. FDOT has begun the process of developing the Highway 29 Action Plan and preliminary recommendations have been created. Input from the community is being solicited.

FDOT has scheduled two open-houses for Tuesday, April 20th to solicit input on the draft recommendations. The first will be at the Escambia County Extension Office from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The second will be at Century City Hall from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Each open-house will present the same information; therefore it is not necessary to attend both sessions.

For persons unable to attend either of the workshops, but are interested in reviewing the preliminary recommendations, a draft executive summary will be on display for review at each of these meeting locations through April 23rd during normal business hours.
