Traffic Delay: Lane Closures On Highway 97

Today, you can expect  lane closures and delays on Highway 97 between North Highway 99 and South Highway 99 in Walnut Hill.

Crews from Panhandle Grading and Paving are working to replace a section of guardrail on Highway 97 just south of South Highway 99, according to Shawn Joseph, project administrator for the contractor. Lanes will be temporarily closed during the guardrail replacement, but one lane is expected to be open at all times.

It’s all part of a project to resurface Highway 97 between Molino and the Alabama state line. The project is expected to last until the fall of 2010.

High Winds Cause Few Problems; Cold And Windy For Tuesday

Winds gusting in excess of 60 mph caused a few minor problems across the North Escambia area late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

The high winds behind a passing storm system caused scattered power outages and few downed power lines. No major damage was reported.

Here is your official North Escambia area forecast:

  • Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Northwest wind around 10 mph.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Wind chill values between 25 and 35 early. North wind between 5 and 10 mph.
  • Wednesday Night: Clear, with a low around 29. North wind around 5 mph.
  • Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 56. Wind chill values between 25 and 35 early. North wind between 5 and 10 mph.
  • Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 29. North wind around 5 mph.
  • Friday: Sunny, with a high near 60. North wind around 5 mph.
  • Friday Night: Clear, with a low around 32. North wind around 5 mph.

Monday Traffic: Lane Closures On Highway 97; Highway 31 Reopen

Some changes to be aware of on your Monday drive — lane closures begin today on Highway 97, and Highway 31 is reopen between Atmore and Perdido.

Highway 97 Closures

Monday, crews from Panhandle Grading and Paving will be working to replace a section of guardrail on Highway 97 just south of North Highway 99, according to Shawn Joseph, project administrator for the contractor.

Highway 31 Reopen

Highway 31 is now reopened between Atmore and Perdido.

The road was  closed to repair damage from heavy rain and flooding back in December, including an area near Pineville Road. The closure was expected to last about a month, but work was completed in less than three weeks.

During the closure, the Alabama Department of Transportation detoured traffic along I-65 between the Atmore and Perdido exits.

  • Tonight: Rain. Low around 41. East wind 5 to 15 mph becoming north. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
  • Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of rain before 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 46. North wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
  • Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. North wind between 5 and 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. North wind around 5 mph.

Today’s The Deadline To Save On Your Property Taxes

Time is running out if you want to save one percent on your property tax bill.

A one percent discount when you pay your real estate and tangible personal property taxes is ending, according to Janet Holley, Escambia County tax collector. Over $44 million — about 18 percent — of the tax roll remains unpaid.

Since the deadline falls during the weekend when the offices are closed, offices will honor the one percent discount Monday, March 1, for in person payments only.

In addition, payments will receive the one percent discount if:

  • mailed with a postmark of February 28
  • left in a 24-hour drop box available at all tax collector offices by midnight February 28
  • made on the tax collector web site by midnight February 28
  • made on the tax collector after-hours automated telephone (800) 601‑1055 by midnight February 28

Drive thru service and 24-hour drop boxes are available at all tax collector locations.

You may check the status of your taxes and pay online at www.escambiataxcollector.com. If you have any questions, please call the tax collector’s office at (850) 438-6500, ext. 252. TTY users for the hearing impaired call (850) 472-0031.

Highway 31 In Alabama Reopens

Highway 31 is now reopened between Atmore and Perdido.

The road was  closed to repair damage from heavy rain and flooding back in December, including an area near Pineville Road. The closure was expected to last about a month, but work was completed in less than three weeks.

During the closure, the Alabama Department of Transportation detoured traffic along I-65 between the Atmore and Perdido exits.

Drive-Thru Flu Clinic Offered Saturday In Jay

The Santa Rosa County Health Department will offer the H1N1 vaccine to the public at a “Drive-Thru to Fight the Flu” Saturday in Jay, Pace and Navarre.

The injectable vaccine and flu mist will be available to persons over age 10 on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event will take place at three locations from 9 a.m. until noon:

  • United Bank, 14038 Alabama Street, Jay
  • Regions Bank, 4612 U.S. 90, Pace
  • Navarre United Methodist Church, 9474 U.S. 98, Navarre

Santa Rosa County Health Department officials says the number of flu cases in the county are currently on the rise, and it is not too late to be vaccinated.

Blood Drive Today At Fran’s In Molino

The Northwest Florida Blood Center will hold a blood drive today from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Fran’s Diner in Molino.

There is an urgent need for all blood types.

Requirements for giving blood are below.

* Donors must be in generally good health
* At least 17 years of age, without permission. 16-year olds are now allowed to donate with permission granted by parents or legal guardians. See our home page for full details or click on the below link for a permission form:
* Must bring picture ID
* Weigh at least 110 lbs
* Free of infection, fever or flu symptoms, for 3 days
* No cancer within the last 5 years
* No antibiotics within the last 48 hours
* No tattoos within the past 12 months
* No chest pain, heart disease, heart surgery (Requires written physician release with diagnosis)
* No history of viral hepatitis
* Additional FDA Restrictions effective May 31, 2002:
* Cannot have lived in France for 5 years or more between 1980 and the present
* Cannot have lived or visited in the UK for a total of 3 months or more from 1980 to 1996
* Cannot have received a blood transfusion in the UK between 1980 and the present
* Military personnel (current and former), and their dependents, who spent time in military bases in northern Europe during 1980-1990, or southern Europe during 1980-1996, for 6 months or more
* All military personnel (active & reserve) that are returning from Iraq, are deferred for a period of 1 year after the last date on location in that country.

Annual Ruritan Farm Equipment Auction Going On Now

The annual Walnut Hill Ruritan Club Farm Equipment Auction is going on today.

The auction includes not only farm equipment, but household items like tools and small equipment, lawn and garden items and more. Sellers can register their items prior to the start of the sale on Saturday morning.

Concessions will be available all day from the Ruritan Club.

Last year, over 200 buyers registered for the annual sale.

The auction started at 9:30 a.m. this morning at the Walnut Hill Community Center on Highway 97.
