Rep. Bonner Staffer To Visit

A staff member from the office of U.S. Representative Joe Bonner (R-AL) will visit Escambia County (Ala.) on Wednesday to meet with any constituents who who may be experiencing difficulties with the federal government and who are seeking the congressman’s assistance in resolving these problems.

The Bonner staffer will be available at Atmore City Hall between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and at the Brewton City Hall from 11:15 to 12:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Lady Chiefs Fall In Regionals; NHS, Jay Advance In District

The Northview Lady Chiefs fell 3-2 in Regional play against Sneads tonight. The Northview boys advanced with a 5-2 win over Baker in District play tonight, and the Jay Royals beat Ponce de Leon 12-2

Northview, Jay In Tournament Play Today (With Monday Scores)

Area coaches are asking local fans to turn out in force in Bratt or Baker today as Northview and Jay take part regional and district tournaments.

In the Florida High School Athletic Association softball regional quarterfinals, the District 1-2A champion Lady Chiefs take on District 2-2A runner up  Sneads at 7 p.m.  Tuesday in Bratt. Admission is $6 for all ages with no passes.

In the District 1-2A baseball district tournament in Baker, Northview and Jay are the two top seeds, separated only by a coin toss that put Jay in the top spot. Monday, Ponce de Leon beat Freeport 9-8, advancing to play Jay in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Also Monday, Baker beat Pensacola Christian Academy 8-7, advancing to face Northview at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the second semifinal game.

Highway 97 At Highway 29 Traffic Delays Expected Wednesday

Traffic on Highway 97 at the intersection of Highway 29 will encounter intermittent lane restrictions on Wednesday as crews from Panhandle Grading & Paving perform resurfacing operations.

Drivers are reminded to use caution, and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.

This work is part of the $5.7 million resurfacing project on Highway 97 from Highway 95A to the Alabama state line. The 22 mile project is scheduled to be complete in the fall.

County Offers Landfill Tour

If you want to know what happens to your trash and recyclables at the landfill, there’s a tour for you on Wednesday.

The Escambia County Division of Solid Waste Management will host public tours at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. at the Perdido Landfill at 13009 Beulah Road. Tours will include a look at the recycling center, the landfill and the citizen’s convenience center.

Big Week For Northview, Jay In Tournament Play

Tuesday will be a big day for the sports programs at both Northview and Jay High School.

For the Lady Chiefs, will be a softball regional quarterfinal at home in Bratt. For the Chiefs, it will be game one of  District 1-2A baseball tournament 50 miles away in Baker. And for the Jay Royals, it also be the opening day of district baseball play in a tournament that could eventually pit the Royals against the Chiefs.

Softball

The brackets are set for the Florida High School Athletic Association softball regional quarterfinals this week, with the District 1-2A champion Lady Chiefs taking on District 2-2A runner up  Sneads at 7 p.m.  Tuesday in Bratt.

Northview (24-3) is coming off a 5-4, seven inning championship win last Thursday night over the Baker Gators (15-8). Sneads (19-7) lost their district championship game last week to South Walton (19-5) , 1-0 in 10 innings.

The winner of the Northview versus Sneads game will advance to the regional semifinals Friday against the winner of Tuesday’s South Walton  and Baker matchup.  The regional finals are set for Tuesday, May 4.

Admission for each game during this week’s playoff series at Northview is $6 for all ages.

Baseball

nhs-wfhs-025.jpgPairings for the District 1-2A tournament this week in Baker came down to the flip of a coin for four teams, including Northview and Jay.

The Chiefs and the Royals were tied for the spot in the district with Jay getting the number one seed on a coin toss. The Baker Gators took the third seed spot after winning a coin toss with Freeport.

The tournament began Monday with Ponce de Leon beating Freeport 9-8, advancing to play Jay in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Also Monday, Baker beat Pensacola Christian Academy 8-7, advancing to face Northview at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the second semifinal game.

The tournament championship game will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Relay For Life Going On Now In Century And Atmore

Rain is not stopping for Relay for Life events this weekend in Century and Atmore, with both events being held indoors.

Century Relay for Life

Teams participating in this year’s Century Relay for Life include Century Correctional Center, Tina’s Journey, Alger Sullivan Historical Society, Byrneville Elementary School, Ernest Ward Middle School, Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church, Northview High School, Century Branch Library and The Mud Bugs.

The public is invited to stop by the Relay and enjoy the festivities. T-shirts, cookbooks, food games and more will be available for sale as teams continue to raise money. The Ernest Ward Middle team will be selling their new cookbook for $10 each at the event that is themed “A World with More Birthdays”.

Atmore Relay For Life

Atmore’s Relay for Life started this morning with a Survivor’s Brunch, but a planned parade was canceled due to the weather.

The Atmore Relay for Life has been moved into the Atmore YMCA gym on Pensacola Avenue due to rain.

The theme for this year’s 12-hour Atmore Relay is “Cancer Is No Parade”.
