FHP: One Dump Truck Driver At Fault In Six Vehicle Highway 29 Crash

October 4, 2019

Three people were injured in a crash involving six vehicles on Highway 29 Friday morning at Highway 29 and Kingsfield Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the entire incident was caused by 43-year old Hosie Mickles of Pensacola in Caterpillar dump truck when he failed to avoid a rear-end collision with a stopped Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 33-year old Candace Cotton of Pace.  The Tahoe was pushed forward into a Toyota Camry driven by 38-year old John Caballero. The Camry was pushed into a Dodge Journey driven 67-year old Sandra Bunch of Pensacola.

After the initial impact with the Chevrolet Tahoe, Mickles’ Caterpillar dump truck traveled into the outside lane and collided with a Ford Explorer driven by 28-year old Carolyn Fitzpatrick of Cantonment before striking a Kenwood dump truck driven by 48-year old William Mercer of Milton.

Mickles, Cotton and Caballero was transported Sacred Heart Hospital with minor injuries. Bunch, Fitzpatrick and Mercer were not injured.

Mickles, who was operating the Caterpillar dump truck, was cited by the FHP for careless driving.

Highway 29 northbound was blocked by the crash for a period of time following the 10:30 a.m. crash. Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

Cantonment Woman Charged After Child Found Alone By Roadway

October 4, 2019

A Cantonment woman is accused of child neglect after her child was found alone along a local roadway.

On Wednesday, a good Samaritan reported she saw the young child walking down the side of the Well Line Road near Pine Top Road. The woman stopped, and the child stated her name and pointed to Brookhills Drive, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. The woman walked with the child who led her to her home.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence, and a deputy knocked at the door multiple times with no answer. When he knocked on a window, Kolbie Renea Klingman came to the door looking for the child.

Klingman told the deputy that the house has deadbolts that require a key to unlock from both the inside and outside, and she put the key in her dresser drawer before trying to get some rest because she had not been feeling well, according to an arrest report.

ECSO records show deputies had responded to two previous situations where the child had left the home unattended. In one of those incidents, the child was able to get the key and unlock the backdoor before being found walking down Brookhills Drive.

Klingman, 26, was charged with child neglect without great bodily harm. She was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

Editor’s note: Readers may remember a similar story in July about a 2-year old that was found alone on Brookhills Drive and a subsequent arrest .ECSO Maj. Andrew Hobbs said the July incident was unrelated to this week’s incident and did not involve the same child or the same home.

Escambia Man Gets Prison Time After Submitting Fake Bills Of Sale For Cars

October 4, 2019

An Escambia County man is headed to prison for cheating the tax collector out of revenue on cars purchases.

Circuit Judge Jan Shackleford sentenced Christopher Canham to 24 months in state prison for two counts of theft of sales tax. After Canham completes his state prison sentence, he will be on probation for an additional three years. He previously pleaded guilty to the charges.

Between February and March of 2018, Canham submitted two fraudulent bills of sale for two cars to the Escambia County Tax Collector. On these forms he inserted fictitious trade in vehicles and falsified the total purchase prices. This had the effect of lowering the taxes due by over $6,000. Canham has a significant criminal history which includes prior convictions for theft and forgery.

Hill Files ‘Fetal Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill

October 4, 2019

State Rep. Mike Hill of Pensacola has filed a “fetal heartbeat” bill for the 2020 legislative session that would prevent doctors from performing an abortion if fetal heartbeats are detected.

A violation would be a third degree felony for “any person who knowingly or purposefully performs or induces an abortion on a pregnant woman with the specific intent of causing or abetting the termination of the life of the preborn human being whose preborn intrauterine heartbeat has been detected.”

Hill filed a similar bill during the last session, but it was never heard in committee.
