County Seeking Applications For Affordable Housing Advisory Committee

The Board of County Commissioners is soliciting applications for representatives to the Escambia-Pensacola Affordable Housing Advisory Committee. The committee was established per F.S. 420.9076  for the purpose of reviewing affordable housing incentives available within the county and to make recommendations concerning those incentives to the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners and Pensacola City Council. The committee will also help in the development of the Local Housing Assistance Plan for the State Housing Initiatives Partnership program.

The board is seeking to fill six slots from the following specializations, as outlined per Florida Statute:

  • One citizen who is actively engaged in the residential home building industry in connection with affordable housing;
  • One citizen who is actively engaged in the banking or mortgage banking industry in connection with affordable housing;
  • One citizen who is a representative of those areas of labor actively engaged in home building in connection with affordable housing;
  • One citizen who is actively engaged as an advocate for low-income persons in connection with affordable housing;
  • One citizen who is actively engaged as a for-profit provider of affordable housing;
  • One citizen who is actively engaged as a real estate professional in connection with affordable housing;
  • One citizen who is actively engaged as a not-for-profit provider of affordable housing;
  • One citizen who resides within the jurisdiction of the local governing body making the appointments;
  • One citizen who represents employers within the jurisdiction;
  • One citizen who actively serves on the local planning agency;
  • One citizen who represents essential services personnel, as defined in the local housing assistance plan

The committee will meet monthly during review and development of the affordable housing incentives and the new LHAP and at least quarterly thereafter. Members will serve a three-year term. Positions will be recommended to the board for approval in July and approved through resolution in September.

All applications must be received no later than Friday, June 29 for consideration.

Flomaton-Century Fireworks Show And Celebration Is Saturday

Century and Flomaton will begin this year’s Independence Day celebration a little early with a celebration and fireworks show this Saturday.

The schedule of events at Anthony Pleasant Park and Showalter Park is as follows:

  • 3:00 – 3:15  Welcome and Opening Remarks
  • 3:15 – 3:30  D.J. Music
  • 3:30 – 4:00  Jewelstones
  • 4:00 – 5:30  Announcements and D.J. Music
  • 4:30 – 5:30  Sawmill Bluegrass Band
  • 5:30 – 6:00  Announcements and D.J. Music
  • 6:00 – 8:00  Ricky Crook and the Horseshoe Halo Band
The event will end with a fireworks display, visible from both parks, at dusk.
Concessions will also be available from Century Little League and other vendors.

The show alternates between Century and Flomaton each year and is jointly funded.

Kids Show Off Their Artistic Skills During Library Summer Reading Program

Summer Reading Club program participants had a chance to show off their artistic skills Wednesday at the Century Branch Library.

Mike Artell, author of “Petite Rouge The Cajun Red Riding Hood”, visited the library to share his unique talents including cartooning and music.

Artell also appeared Thursday morning at the Molino Branch Library.

Jimmie Taylor

Jimmie Taylor, 79, of Jay, Florida passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018.

He enjoyed fishing, working on lawn mowers, loving his family and drinking sweet tea.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Willie Bee Taylor; sons, James Boots Taylor and Eugene Taylor and brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Adam Taylor, Amber Taylor, Ashley Taylor, Alex Moody and Angie Moody, many great-grandchildren and his sister, Addie Lee Moore.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with services following at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Ebenezer Church, 4200 Ebenezer Church Road, Jay, Florida with Brother Bobby Conley officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Jerry Neal

Jerry Neal, age 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL. Jerry was born August 30, 1935 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, to Frank and Mable (McQuary) Neal. Jerry was a 1954 graduate of Vardaman High School in Vardaman, MS. He entered the Army on April 23, 1954 and served until July 31, 1962. He went on to graduate from Mississippi State University with a bachelor of science degree in business. He married his high school sweetheart, Rebecca Jo Allen. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in April. Together, they had 1 daughter. He worked in retail management, ending his career as a Regional Vice-President with Walmart in 2007.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Rebecca; daughter, Angela Neal Thiessen and her husband Jeff Thiessen, granddaughter Kelsi Breeayn Thiessen, all of Rogers, Arkansas; nephews Bobby Switzer and his wife Sandra and David Switzer of Aberdeen, Mississippi.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 2PM CST at Faith Chapel North, 1000 S Hwy 29, Cantonment, FL 32533. The family will greet friends there on Friday from 1:15PM until the time of service.

Edwin H Gould

Edwin H Gould, Jr, 93, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018. Mr. Gould was born on Feb 16, 1925, in Mobile, AL. He graduated in 1943 from Okolona High School in Okolona, MS. Mr. Gould joined the US Army when he was 18 years old in 1943 and served as a combat medic in WWII in Europe until he was discharged on Mar 27, 1946.

He received a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from the University of Mississippi in 1949 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. Gould married Jennie Louise Graham, of Coden, AL, on Feb 16, 1952. He spent his career as a manager of Morrison’s Cafeterias for 35 years. He and his wife, Jennie, spent their retirement years in Pensacola, FL where they were members of Gadsden Street United Methodist Church. They created cherished memories for the family by taking them on annual beach trips which became the highlight of the families’ years. In Aug 2013 he and Jennie moved to a retirement community in Birmingham, AL.

Mr. Gould had a generous heart, was a faithful servant in the church, and was devoted in love to his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jennie Gould. He is survived by his children, Julie Silvey (Michael) of Tampa, FL, Ben Gould (Sharon) of Houston, TX, Bob Gould (Jeanette) of Front Royal, VA, Jennie Shewmake (Bobby) of Birmingham, AL, seven grandchildren, Ryan Silvey (Nicole), Kellie Carroccetto (Charles), Kaitlin Fron (Sam), Christy Megalo (Darren), Brandon Shewmake, Clayton Gould, Kathryn Davis (Jesse), and one great grandchild, Sammy Fron.

Visitation will be at Faith Chapel Funeral Home on July 1, 2018, at 1:00 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held on Monday, July 2, 2018, at Barrancas National Cemetery at 10:00 a.m.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Fair Haven Retirement Community and Oasis Hospice for their comfort and care in Mr. Gould’s final days.

Angelynn Jubilee

Angelynn Jubilee lived 31 weeks in the comfort of her mother’s womb and was received in the arms of her loving heavenly father on Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Ronald Cone. She is survived by her loving parents, Clifford and Jamie Cone; her siblings, Cherokee, Caleb, Elijah, Liliannah and Benjamin; her grandparents, Victoria (Kurt) Miller, Mark (Sandra) Pepper and Vickie Pepper; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Graveside service will be Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Tim Zacharis officiating.

Inmate Escapes In Escambia County

June 27, 2018

Authorities are searching for an escaped inmate in Escambia County.

Tuesday, Michael Reed, an inmate, walked out of the Department of Corrections on West Fairfield Drive, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday afternoon.  He may be driving a red 1994 Jeep Cherokee with Florida tag number H53TSH.

It is believed he could be traveling to New Orleans. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP or the ECSO at (850) 436-9620.
