Playoff Results: Northview Beats Jay, Tate Falls To Pine Forest

Number 4 Northview defeated number 5 Jay 51-45 Tuesday night. The Chiefs will advance in the District 1-2A Tournament to take on number 1 Freeport at 6 p.m. Friday at Baker High School in a semifinal game.

Lance Bushaw led the Chiefs (9-8) with 14 points, while Colton Sims added 12 and Austin Arrington contributed 11. Todd Laney led the Royals (4-15) with 18 points.

Pine Forest defeated Tate Tuesday night in the District 1-5A Quarterfinals, 67-52. Pine Forest will advance to play Milton on Friday. Josh Gray led the Aggies with 23.

Lady Chiefs Announce Softball Schedule

The 2011 Northview Lady Chiefs softball schedule has been announced for both the junior varsity and varsity programs. The Lady Chiefs will open the season on the road against Pine Forest on February 15. The first home game will be February 18 against Pensacola Catholic.

Northview’s varsity team is the defending district champions, with pitcher Misty Doran returning to the mound as a sophomore. She led the area in strikeouts last year with 141 batters sent back to the box.

Locals Run The Double Bridges (With Complete Results)

Over 3,100 runners took part in Saturday’s 14th annual Pensacola Double Bridge Run.

In the 15K,  top overall North Escambia area finisher was Matt Dobson of Jay at seventh overall with a time of 52:19. Rusty Branch of Cantonment finished 11th with a time of 55:35, and Matthew Nixon of Molino finished 22nd overall with a time of 58:17. Dobson was first in Male Masters division.

In the 5K Run, the top overall North Escambia area finishers were: Jason Scott of Jay at 52nd with a time of 24:16; Richard Tavenner of Cantonment at 57th with a time of 24:24; and Brandon Rogers of Cantonment with a time of 24:50 at 66th.

In the 5K Walk, the top overall North Escambia area finishers were Merrie Fox, 19th, with a time of 39:24; Frank Templeton of Cantonment at 26th with a time of 40:31; and Sandra Russell of Cantonment at 47th with a time of 42:47.

Jay’s Robin Blackman Signs With Troy State

Jay High School’s Robin Blackman signed a track/cross country scholarship with Troy  University on Wednesday’s National Signing Day. She also received Troy’s Millennium Scholar’s Award, TSU’s top academic scholarship. The award covers tuition, room and board and is valued at approximately $69,000.

Blackman will become a Trojan in the fall of this year.

Molino Park Students Place In We Believe In Children 5K

The 23rd Annual We Believe In Children Run/Walk was held Saturday at Longleaf Elementary School in Pensacola, with many North Escambia residents taking part.

Complete race results were not available late Saturday night, but we do know three Molino Park Elementary School students placed. Ronnie Plenkers (36:53)  took second in the Boys age eight and under division, Jessica Conti (36:58) took first in girls age eight and under, and Dillon Conti (26:15)  finished second in the boys age 11 and under category.

FHSAA Approves New Rural Division With Northview, Jay; Tate In 1-6A

It’s official — the  Florida High School Athletic Association’s new Rural Division, the new 1A, has been approved with small schools like Northview and Jay.

Football maintained its eight-class structure, with the lowest two classifications designated and renamed as 2A (Urban) and 1A (Rural). That means classes will now be from 1A to 8A; schools such as Tate would remain in a class 1-4A will actually be in a renamed 1-6A class.

Baseball, basketball, softball and girls volleyball increased to eight classifications, with the lowest two classifications designated as 2A (Urban) and 1A (Rural).

The new Class1A (Rural) includes 36 schools for football, with District 1 comprised of Northview, Jay, Freeport and Baker. In boys basketball, girls basketball, softball and baseball, Northview and Jay will join Baker, Chipley, Freeport and Holmes County (Bonifay) in 2-1A Rural. For girls volleyball, 1-1A will include Northview, Jay, Laurel Hills, Central and Baker.

Class 1-6A, the former 1-4A, will include Tate, Escambia, Milton, Pace, Pensacola, Pine Forest and Washington. For boys basketball, girls basketball, softball, baseball, and volleyball,  District 1-6A will be made up of Tate, Escambia, Milton, Navarre, Pace, Pensacola, Pine Forest and Washington

Little League Ball Registration Continues

Registration is continuing  for Century Little League,  Molino Recreation Association at Don Sutton Park and Northwest Escambia Little League at Walnut Hill’s Bradberry Park.  Details for all three parks are below.

Century Little League

Century Little League Registration will be Saturday, February 5 and February 12 from 9-11 a.m. at Showalter Park.

Molino Recreation Association will hold registration each Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. through February 19 at Don Sutton Park. The annual draft will be February 19 at 3 p.m.

Registration fees are $50 for the first child, $45 for the second, $40 for the third and free for additional players from the same family. A birth certificate copy is required to be on file for each child.

Northwest Escambia Little League registration has been extended. Registration will be held Saturday, February 5 from 9 a.m. until noon and Saturday, February 12 from 9-10 a.m. at Bradberry Park for ages 3-18. Tryouts will be Saturday, February 12 at 10 a.m. Junior and Senior leagues can register until March 19.

A copy of the child’s birth certificate is required for registration.

Registration fees are $40 for the first child, $30 for the second child and free for additional children. The child will be measured for their uniform, and there will be a $20 deposit toward each child’s uniform fee.

Northview Honors Winning Football Team, Cheerleaders

The Northview Chiefs honored their football players and cheerleaders and their annual banquet.

The Chiefs finished their season with the Regional 1-A Championship. The 2010 Chiefs were the only team in the history of Northview High School to bring home a Regional title and the first to make a playoff game east of Tallahassee.

“I can’t put into words how proud I am of this group,” Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley said of the Regional win.

Northview Head Cheerleading Coach Anna Barry and JV Coach Megan Carroll said they are also proud of their squads.

Tate Aggies Ink Softball Scholarships

Two Tate High School seniors signed softball scholarships Thursday afternoon.

Shelby Myers committed to Northwest Florida State College, and Maleah McCombs signed with Pensacola State College.
