Northview Falls To Freeport In Battle Of Distict 1-A Powers (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs slipped to the number two spot in the District 1-A race with a 27-13 loss to Freeport Friday night.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with 6:35 to go in the first quarter on a 66-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Sheets to Dustin Yuhasz and a good point after kick from Lance Bushaw.
About two minutes later, the Bulldogs answered with a 49-yard touchdown pass, but the kick missed the uprights. Northview held a 7-6 advantage headed into the second.
The second quarter would see only the Bulldogs scoring, including an 11-yard pass and a 25-yard run. The third quarter was a scoreless defensive battle.
In the fourth quarter, Freeport struck again with a 15-yard run and good kick. The Chiefs’ LaMikal Kyles scored on the final play of the game with a 6-yard pass from Sheets with no time on the clock.
With the win, Freeport took the top spot in District 1-A with a 5-0 district record. The Northview Chiefs are now 4-1 in the district, 5-1 overall. Vernon is also 4-1 in the district.
The Northview Chiefs will be at home against the 0-6 Jay Royals next Friday night.

Lady Chiefs Honor Volleyball Seniors, Sweep Jay Royals

The Northview Lady Chiefs honored their senior players Thursday night as they defeated the Jay Royals in three straight games. The JV Chiefs also took two straight from Jay.
“We had a great ceremony for our seniors and I felt that the players did a great job with their messages to each other and the team. All 6 seniors started and played in every game during our match with Jay. I feel that this is a testament to the great senior class that we have this year,” Northview Head Coach Betty Heaton said. “Through out their game they stayed positive as a team even when the score was tight. They did a great job finishing each game.”

Varsity
The varsity Lady Chiefs beat Jay in three games, 25-21, 23-22, 25-20.
The seniors lead the Lady Chiefs to victory, with Shawna Montgomery having 13 kills, two blocks and two aces. Sarah Killam added half a dozen assists and a couple of aces. Ashley Digmon had eight assists, two aces and an assist, while Kara Hardin recorded two kills, three aces, one block and an assist. Katie Wieborg had three kills and one ace for the Lady Chiefs.
With the win, the varsity Lady Chiefs improved to 5-3 in the district.
JV
The JV Lady Chiefs down the Jay Royals in two, 25-11, 25-20.
“JV did a great job coming out ready to play. I was pleased with their level of communication on the court and the effort they gave,” Heaton said.
Hannah Fiellin and Rebecca Masaitis each had one kill and one ace. Madison Arrington had one ace and an assist, while Rebecca Grim had one kill. The JV Chiefs also had a two kills from Ali Martin.
The JV Lady Chiefs are 7-8 overall.

Trestine Dean #10
Trestine enjoys physical eduction in school and hopes to become a doctor. She enjoys pizza, Criminal Minds, the movie Madea Goes to Jail and likes all types of music.
Ashley Digmon #9
Ashley’s favorite subject in school is physical education, and she plans to become a teacher. She likes country music, American Idol and The Notebook. Her favorite food is chicken.

Sarah’s favorite class is English, and she plans to be a physical therapist. She enjoys watching 7th Heaven and the movie Step Up. He likes Christian music, and her favorite food is “anything”.

Kara enjoys physical education and plans to be a cosmetologist. Her favorite movie is Dear John, and on TV she likes The Secret Life of the American Teenage. She likes steak and country music.
Shawna Montgomery #4
Shawna plans to be an athletic trainer; he favorite subject in school is physical education. She enjoys Christian music, the movie Superstar, the TV show Grey’s Anatomy and her favorite food is roast.
Katie Wieborg #5
Katie enjoys watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager and The Notebook. Her favorite dish is Chicken Roban, and she enjoys country music. In school she like physical eduction. She plans to become a missionary.

JV West Florida Jags Down NHS Chiefs (With Photo Gallery)

The junior varsity Northview Chiefs fell to the West Florida High School Jaguars Thursday evening. 20-16.

The Jaguars took the lead 8-0 in the first quarter with 5:39 on the clock.
About two minutes later, the Chiefs crossed midfield deep into Jaguar territory on a Kevin Vaughan pass to Dalton Daniel. On the next play, Vaughan was in on a 15-yard quarterback keeper. A good two point conversion, and the game was tied 8-8 in Bratt.
The Jaguars would strike again with just 50 seconds to go in the first quarter. West Florida fumbled away their chance at two for a 14-8 lead headed into the second.
The second quarter remained scoreless until just 50 seconds before the half and a 21-yard touchdown run from sophomore Dy’shun White. A two-point pass to Chris Madison was good, and the Chiefs took a 16-14 lead over West Florida into the third quarter.
West Florida went on to claim a 20-16 win over the Northview Chiefs.
The Chiefs will travel to Escambia County (Atmore) on October 25 for their final game of the season.

Jay, Northview Cross Country Team Members Set Records

Runners from Northview and Jay High set personal best times during a cross county meet Tuesday at Sims Middle School in Pace.
In a field of 12 teams, the Lady Royals placed third, while Northview’s boys’ and girls’ teams both placed 11.
Robin Blackman led the Royals with a new personal record of 21:09. Josh Scott, 19th overall, led the Chiefs with a new personal best time of 19:19; and Georgia Goetter placed 20th overall among girls with a 23:01 personal best time.
Rounding out the top five for the Royals were Allison Blair (22:10), Leely Trevino (22:30), Jenna Thornton (23:36, a personal record), and Jorja Agrait (24:05). Other runners to set personal records for Jay were Ally Settle (24:53) and Samantha Cerqueira (27:33).

Blackcat Invitational
The girls cross county team from Jay placed first among Saturday Rosa County schools this past Saturday at the Blackcat Invitational held at the East Milton Recreational Park.
The overall 8th grade champion, Jessica Thornton of Jay finished with a time of 22:33, and the 11th grade champion, Allison Blair of Jay finished with a time of 22:25.
The Royals also had the first and second place finishers among Santa Rosa schools. Leely Trevino was first with a time of 21:37, and Robin Blackman finished second with a time of 21:50. Trevino and Blackman also placed in the top 15 runners overall. Jay placed third in a field of 12 teams.

Northview Defeats PCA

The Northview Lady Chiefs defeated Pensacola Christian Academy in both varsity and junior varsity volleyball Tuesday.
Varsity
The Chiefs defeated PCA in a five-game match, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-7.
Senior Shawna Montgomery led the Lady Chiefs with 11 kills, six blocks, six digs and seven aces. Sarah Killam added 13 assists, one kill and an ace, while Ashley Digmon had 14 assists, one ace and two digs.
Morgan Payne, a sophomore, recorded four kills, two aces, two blocks and a dig, and Katie Wieborg had three digs, one block, 11 kills and two aces for the Lady Chiefs.
Northview’s varsity improved to 6-14 overall, 4-3 in the district.
The Lady Chiefs have one remaining home match this season as they host Jay on Thursday. The JV plays at 5 p.m., and the varsity takes the court at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
Junior Varsity
The NHS JV defeated PCA in two straight games, 25-8, 25-20 to improve to 3-0 overall.
The Lady Chiefs had one kill, one ace, five assists and one dig from Madison Arrington, and Danielle Steadham added three kills and one block. Lana Clayton had seven kills and one block, and Paeton Hadley had one kills, six assists and two aces for the JV Lady Chiefs.

Vote For Northview’s Roderick Woods For TV 3 Play Of The Week

Once again, a Northview High School football player’s outstanding moves have him nominated for a WEAR TV 3 Play Of the Week.
In the Play of the Week nominee video, Roderick Woods catches a pass from NHS quarterback Brandon Sheets. Woods is tackled by a couple of Holmes County Blue Devils, only to roll off of them and sprint almost 70 yards to about the Blue Devil’s five-yard line. The play resulted in a one yard touchdown dive from the Chiefs’ Levi Gideons.

Northview’s La’Mikal Kyles recently won a WEAR 3’s Prep Football Final Play of the Week for swiping the ball from a surprised Bozeman Buck on a fumble and carrying it 32 yards for a NHS touchdown.

Northview Remains Undefeated With Homecoming Win (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs remained undefeated with a Friday night homecoming 35-14 win over Holmes County of Bonifay.
“I was very proud of the way we started; we came out and moved the football,” said Northview Head Coach Sid Wheatley. “The defense I thought played extremely well.”

The Chiefs wasted no time in showing the Blue Devils who is boss in Bratt; Northview’s Roderick Woods was in on a two-yard touchdown run with 8:48 remaining in the first quarter to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, a Brandon Sheets to Dustin Yuhasz pass gained 63-yards to setup a seven-yard touchdown run from La’Mikal Kyles a couple of plays later. Lance Bushaw’s kick was dead-on through the uprights, giving Northview a 14-0 advantage.
With 4:41 on the clock in the half, Montaio Mitchell had a five-yard touchdown to put the Chiefs up 21-0. Later in the second, Sheets hit Woods witha 69-yard pass to put the Chiefs back deep in Blue Devil territory. Then, with 1:23 before halftime, the Chiefs’ Levi Gideons made a one-yard dive for the end zone. Northview was up 28-0 before the Tribal Beat hit the field for their Tribute to the Beatles halftime show.
Holmes County scored in the third, 28-7. Then, less than a minute into the fourth quarter, a 17-yard quarterback scramble by Brandon Sheets and a good kick from Bushaw made it 35-7.
With an even five minutes to go in the game, Holmes County managed another touchdown, 35-14.
“We made some adjustments with our linebackers, and we started to get a little bit of pass rush,” Wheatley said. “We broke on the ball and we played the ball in the secondary. And I was so glad to see that from the previous week at Baker where we struggled a little back there. I thought we played the ball well and took advantage of a short field a couple of times.”
“We had a couple of mistakes in the second half. We’ve got to correct some penalties and other issues like that, but overall I thought it was a tremendous win for us,” Wheatley said.
The Chiefs (5-0, 4-0) will be on the road next week against Freeport (4-1, 4-0).

JV Chiefs Chomp Baker (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs chomped the Baker Gators 46-32 Thursday night in junior varsity football.

The Chiefs took the lead less than three minutes into the game with a 26-yard touchdown from Dy’shun White. Chad Smith was in for the two point conversion, and NHS was on top 8-0. With 56.7 second to go in the the first quarter, Baker tied it up 8-8. The Chiefs struck again seconds later with a 70-yard touchdown run from LaMikal Banks. The Chiefs’ point after attempt failed, and they held a 14-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Gators tied the game up 14-14 less than a minute into the second quarter. Then with 6:04 remaining in the half, sophomore Kevin Vaughan had three-yard touchdown dash for Northview. White was in for the two-pointer, and the Chiefs held a 22-14 advantage that would stand heading into halftime.
The Gators scored again in the third quarter, 22-20. Then with 37.2 seconds on the clock in the third, Chad Smith scored for the Chiefs. Northview was successful with a two point attempt, with Vaughan tripping his way across the goal line for a 30-20 lead.
Vaughan added another TD in the fourth quarter. The point after attempt was no good, 36-20. Baker answered with another touchdown, but their point after pass was picked off by Tyler Gifford, 36-26 with 6:14 to go in the game.
With 2:17 on the clock, Gifford grabbed an attempted Gator touchdown pass in the end zone for a safety, 38-26. Sophomore Aaron Floyd added another Chiefs’ touchdown with Tullis successful on the two point conversion, 46-26.
The Gators drove to second and goal with 20.5 seconds on the clock, but they were stopped by a host of Chiefs.
The Northview JV Chiefs will host West Florida Tech next Thursday night at 6:00 before wrapping up their season in Atmore against the Escambia County Blue Devils on October 25.

Record Setting Run For Jay’s Cross Country Team

The Jay High School Girls Cross Country team posted their fastest times of the season with 9 of 13 runners setting personal records at a meet earlier this week at Pace High School.
Robin Blackman led the Royals with a personal record of 21:27. The top five was rounded out by Leely Trevino with a time of 21:30, Jessica Thornton with 22:23, Allison Blair with 22:31, and Caristyn Golden with 22:48. Jay placed third in a field of nine teams.
