7A Matchup: Tate, Niceville Meet In Spring Game

The Tate Aggies had a chance to take on their one of their new 7A opponents Niceville Friday night in a spring football game. The Aggies came up short, 21-7, on the road.
The game was tied scoreless up until about 8:30 in the fourth, when Niceville scored on a 5-yard run. Niceville scored again with 3:30 to go on a 1-yard run, and again in the final moments on a 29-yard touchdown pass for a 21-0 lead.
With just a couple of seconds on the clock, Sawyer Smith found Lavontoe Samuel for a 66-yard touchdown run for a 21-7 final.
The Tate Aggies are part of a new three-team Class 7A district with Niceville and Crestview for the upcoming regular season, their first under new Head Coach Ronnie Douglas, a Tate grad.
The fall season will open for Tate with a home game on August 22 against the Gulf Breeze Dolphins. They won’t face their first 7A district opponent until the end of a five-game stand on October 4 against Niceville. The only other district game will come on the road against Crestview on October 18.
Wahoos Shut Down Suns 2-1

Josh Smith scattered seven hits over 6.2 innings and led the way as the Pensacola Blue Wahoos knocked off the Jacksonville Suns 2-1 on Friday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
Smith (4-5) picked up his first win since April 29 by allowing just one run on seven hits in his outing. The righthander struck out seven and continued his dominance of Jacksonville. In three starts against the Suns this year, Smith is 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA, striking out 20 in 17.2 innings. The only run he allowed was a fourth inning single from Zack Cox that scored Kyle Jensen.
Pensacola jumped out on top early against Jacksonville starter Bryan Evans (0-3). With two outs, Tucker Barnhart singled and came home on a double by Bryson Smith to give the Blue Wahoos a 1-0 lead.
After Jacksonville tied the game in the fourth, the Wahoos retook the lead for good in the fifth. Ryan LaMarre stepped to dish with runners on second and third and slapped a single through the drawn-in infield to score Devin Lohman. The base knock snapped an 0-for-14 skid for LaMarre.
Lee Hyde and Loek Van Mil combined for 2.1 scoreless frames out of the bullpen with Van Mil picking up his third save of the year by retiring the final four batters of the game, including a 12-pitch strikeout of Jake Marisnick to end the contest.
The Blue Wahoos look for the series win in the six-game series on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Tim Crabbe (2-4, 3.74) will get the ball for Pensacola against Jacksonville’s Adam Conley (4-2, 4.72).

Suns Beat Wahoos 11-2

Jake Marisnick blasted two grand slams in back-to-back innings and led the Jacksonville Suns in an 11-2 rout of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Thursday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
Marisnick became the fifth player in the history of the Southern League to record nine RBI in one game. His night started early with a first-inning RBI double and took off in the seventh. Batting with the bases loaded, after an error on the front end of a possible double play extended the inning, Marisnick unloaded his first career grand slam on a 1-2 hanging breaking ball from Josh Ravin to give Jacksonville a 6-0 lead.
An inning later, Marisnick came up with the bags juiced again and launched a second grand slam, this one on a 1-1 pitch from Ravin. Marisnick finished the night by going 3-for-5 with two grand slams, his fifth and sixth homers of the year, two runs scored and nine RBI. It was the first time since Butch Garcia drove in nine on August 4, 1989 for Charlotte that a Southern League player recorded as many RBI.
Marisnick’s night marred what was a great start for Daniel Renken. The righthander fell to 1-4 despite allowing just one run on four hits in six innings while tying a season-high with seven punchouts. The only run he gave up was in the first inning on a double by Marisnick.
Pensacola couldn’t get anything going on offense until the ninth inning. The Wahoos strung together four singles in the ninth with RBI’s from Devin Lohman and Luis Durango to account for the final margin.
The series continues on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Josh Smith (3-5, 4.10) toes the rubber for Pensacola while Bryan Evans (0-2, 9.00) will get the start for Jacksonville.

Wahoos Split Twin Bill

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos were held scoreless by the Jacksonville Suns through the first 12 innings of Wednesday’s doubleheader, but strung together a pair of doubles in the last of the sixth in game two of the twin-bill and hung on for a 1-0 win at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
Bryson Smith led off the last of the sixth with a double down the left field line and came around to score a batter later on David Vidal’s double to left. The run snapped a 15-inning scoreless streak for Pensacola and gave the Wahoos their second win in the first three games of the series.
Lee Hyde (2-4) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief of spot starter Shaun Ellis. In his first career start in affiliated baseball, Ellis tossed four scoreless frames while fanning a career-high four batters. Drew Hayes pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to nail down his second save.
Jacksonville took game one, 1-0, to snap its five-game losing streak. The Suns lone run was unearned as Noah Perio reached on a leadoff error by Brodie Greene and scored on a two-out single by Major League rehabber Logan Morrison in the third inning. The error was the first blunder of the season by the Wahoos second baseman.
Pensacola had numerous chances to win the game as the Wahoos left 10 runners on base in the seven-inning contest. Pensacola had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, bases loaded with two outs in the sixth, and the bags packed with one out in the seventh but couldn’t push across a run. Pensacola was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, but runners were held at third on both base hits.
Ryan Dennick dropped to a hard-luck 2-5 despite yielding just an unearned run on two hits in five frames. Sam Dyson (2-4) fired five two-hit innings for the win for Jacksonville while Michael Brady picked up his 10th save of the year by putting out the fire in the seventh with a pop out and a strikeout.
The series continues on Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. Daniel Renken (1-3, 4.03) gets the start for the Wahoos while the Suns will counter with Robert Morey (1-1, 3.59).

The Northview High School Chiefs honored their varsity and junior varsity baseball teams Tuesday night during their annual banquet at Lake Stone in Century.

Northview’s Kevin Vaughan Signs With Wallace Community College

Northview Chiefs senior shortstop and pitcher Kevin Vaughan signed a baseball scholarship Tuesday night with Wallace Community College in Selma, AL.
During his high school career, Vaughan was selected to the West All-star team for Escambia County and was recognized by NHS Coach Marty Lister as the Chiefs’ MVP for his leadership skills.

Blue Wahoos Lose Ninth Straight

The Chattanooga Lookouts scored in each of their first four at-bats en route to an 11-1 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to finish off a five-game sweep on Monday evening at AT&T Field. Pensacola’s losing streak reached nine straight games.
The Lookouts pounded four home runs to blow out the Wahoos in the series finale. Yasiel Puig belted two homers, a three-run shot in the first and a two-run blast in the fourth to account for five RBI. Griff Erickson added a pair himself, a solo dinger in the second and a rout-capping, two-run moonshot in the seventh.
Tim Crabbe (2-4) was roughed up in three innings for Pensacola, yielding six runs (all earned) on five hits while walking four. After giving up homers in the first two innings, Crabbe walked three batters in the third, including two with the bags packed to force in two runs.
Pensacola’s lone run came in the top of the seventh when Theo Bowe smacked a two-out, pinch-hit double to score David Vidal from first. The two-bagger extended Bowe’s modest hitting streak to four games.
The Wahoos now return home to try and snap the extended losing skid with the first of a six-game series with the Jacksonville Suns. Chad Rogers (2-2, 1.93) gets the ball for Pensacola against Jacksonville’s Jay Jackson (2-1, 2.56). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Blue Wahoos Drop Another One

The Blue Wahoos were unable to hang on to two separate leads as Pensacola dropped their eighth straight with a 6-4 loss to the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field on Sunday night.
The Blue Wahoos put two runs on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by Ryan LaMarre that scored Bryson Smith from third, and an RBI single from Tucker Barnhart scoring Theo Bowe from second. The Lookouts were quick to respond getting a solo home run from leadoff man Rafael Ynoa in the bottom of the frame. Chattanooga tied it when Angelo Songco homered in his first at bat with the Lookouts in the bottom of the second.
In the fifth, Pensacola reclaimed the lead on a bases loaded walk to Barnhart that forced in Smith. A batter later, the Wahoos got another run when reliever Luis Vasquez balked to bring home Bowe. Again, Chattanooga answered. The Lookouts scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth against Wahoo starter Josh Smith to go in front 5-4. The big blow was a two-run double by Yasiel Puig, giving him six RBI for the series. He scored the go-ahead run later in the inning on a base hit from Ozzie Martinez. The Lookouts added some insurance with a run in the seventh off Wahoos reliever Drew Hayes.
Smith (L, 3-5) was finished after six innings and took the loss. He struck out six batters in the game, but the five runs he allowed were the most since he gave up five to Mobile in his second start of the season back on 4/10. All four Blue Wahoos runs were charged to Lookouts starter Steve Smith. He was finished after 4.1 innings and didn’t qualify for the win. Vasquez (W, 3-2) picked up the win out of the bullpen. He worked 2.2 innings and struck out four. He allowed both inherited runners to score. They were charged to Smith. Yimi Garcia (S, 10) pitched the final five outs for Chattanooga to record the save.
Bryson Smith was the bright spot in the Blue Wahoos order with a 2-for-4 game. He added a pair of runs scored.
Pensacola will look to snap their eight game skid and avoid the first five-game series sweep in team history on Monday night in Chattanooga. The Blue Wahoos will turn to RHP Tim Crabbe (2-3, 2.88) against LHP Michael Thomas (1-0, 1.23). First pitch is slated for 6:15 p.m. CT at AT&T Field. Following the game, the Blue Wahoos will return home to open a five-game homestand with the Jacksonville Suns.

Taylor Roberson Becomes Third Chief To Sign With Jeff Davis Volleyball

Northview High School’s Taylor Roberson signed a volleyball scholarship Friday with Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton.
Roberson became the third Chief to sign a volleyball scholarship this year with Jeff Davis, joining teammates Morgan Smith and Morgan Payne.
