Ernest Ward Beats Flomaton And McCall In Volleyball

The Ernest Ward Middle School volleyball team’s season is off to a good start after they defeated both Flomaton Middle School and McCall Middle School.
The Eagles beat the Flomaton Hurricanes 25-23 in the first game and 25 to 20 in the second game.
Ernest Ward downed McCall Middle School in a double header Thursday night. They Eagles won the first game 25 to 12, lost the second 25-24 and won the third 15 to 0.

Flomaton JV Beats Escambia County Middle 22-12

Flomaton High School held “Meet the Canes” Tuesday night. This event is held every year to introduce the football and volleyball players, cheerleaders and band members to the fans.
The Canes JV football team had a game against Escambia County Middle School of Atmore. The Canes had another victory, winning by a score of 22-12, in this preseason game. The regular football season opens up this Friday night at home against Calhoun. The JV open up there regular season September 2 at home against Georgiana at 6:30.

Funeral Held For Former Flomaton Player

Funeral services were held Saturday for a former Flomaton football player that passed away following football practice last week at a Montgomery college.
Huntington freshman Sam Henry Collins, Jr., 18, died August 15 after being taken to a Montgomery hospital following his collapse at the college’s second football practice of the year.
Collins graduated from Flomaton High School this past spring. He was a defensive lineman for the Hurricanes, and he was an Alabama Class 2A All-State player that was 6 foot 1, 240 pounds.
Funeral services for Collins were held Saturday morning with Rev. John Evangelistia and Rev. Glenn McCall officiating. Interment followed in Pollard Cemetery.
Collins is survived by his parents, Sam Henry Collins, Sr., and Marion Yvonne Monroe Collins of Pollard; one brother, Sam Henry Hooker of Huntsville, Ala.; three sisters, Martha Collins of Pollard, Jeanna Collins Pierre of Atlanta, Ga., and Samantha Boykins of Mobile; and an adopted grandmother, Lynn Hudson. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Flomaton.
Pallbearers were members of the Flomaton High School football team.

Hurricanes Blow Past J.U. Blacksher In Thursday Preseason Games

The area’s football season got underway Thursday night as the Flomaton Hurricanes dealt a double blow to the Bulldogs of J.U. Blacksher.
The varsity Hurricanes beat the Bulldogs 22-6 in a preseason scrimmage that was two 12 minute quarters. The JV ‘Canes played one 10 minute quarter in Uriah, blowing away the JV Bulldogs 8-0.

Funeral services have been announced for a former Flomaton High School football player that collapsed and died Friday following football practice at Huntington College in Montgomery.
The funeral for Sam Collins, 18, will be at 10:00 Saturday morning at Flomaton High School. The Rev. John Evangelista of the First United Methodist Church of Flomaton will officiate.
Huntington College will dedicate a chapel service to Collins. That chapel service will be held at the school in Montgomery on September 3.
A memorial fund has been established to assist the family with final arrangements. Donations may be sent to the Office of External Affairs, Huntingdon College, 1500 E. Fairview Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama, 36109. Checks may be made payable to Huntingdon College and designated to the Sam Collins Memorial Fund.

2008 Flomaton Grad Dies Following College Football Practice In Montgomery

A Flomaton High School graduate collapsed and later died Friday following football practice at Huntington College in Montgomery.
Huntington freshman Sam Collins, 18, died after being taken to a Montgomery hospital following his collapse at the college’s second football practice of the year.
Collins graduated from Flomaton High School this spring. He was a defensive lineman for the Hurricanes, and he was an Alabama Class 2A All-State player that was 6 foot 1, 240 pounds.
“We ask for your thoughts and prayers to surround the Collins family in this time of grief,” Huntington President J. Cameron West said Saturday. “The Huntingdon community is devastated by the death of this bright and promising young man. We are planning a gathering on campus to remember him and to honor his life.”
West said Friday was the second official practice of the season, with players having checked in on Wednesday. The team held practice from 9:30 until 11:30 Friday morning in 85 degree weather. The practiced in shorts, shirts and helmets, but no pads, he said.
“Sam experienced cramping during the latter stages of practice, for which he received hydration. After practice, he became ill and was taken to the Athletic Training Room. He was assessed by our Certified Athletic Trainers, who called paramedics. Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and transported Sam to Jackson Hospital, where he arrived at approximately 12:30 p.m. Head Coach Mike Turk contacted Sam’s mother, who traveled to Montgomery,” West said.
““The medical team at Jackson Hospital cared for Sam until his death at about 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Collins was at Jackson Hospital when her son passed away. An official cause of death has not been determined, and we understand an autopsy will be performed,” West added.

Blue Wahoos To Renovate Fields At Century’s Showalter Park
December 31, 2025
The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will team with area businesses and organizations to renovate little league fields at Showalter Park in Century.
Planned improvements include an overhaul of the infield clay, painting of foul poles, weeding, mowing and trimming required to bring these fields into game-ready shape for the youth of the Century area.
The work is scheduled to take place Tuesday.
