Turnovers in the first half and penalties in the second half served as the cause of offensive struggles for both teams. The Seahawks scored early in the second quarter to take a 7-0 advantage on an eight yard touchdown run. The Chiefs had two opportunities late in the second quarter to tie up the game, but fumbled the ball away on the Seahawk five yard line and started another drive at the Seahawk 14 as a result of an interception by junior Austin Arrington.

They scored on the next play, but were denied due to a holding penalty and the Chiefs wound up turning the ball over on downs right before the end of the half. Midway through the third quarter, the Seahawks put together an 11 play, 55 yard drive for another score to increase their lead to 14-0.

On the ensuing drive, the Chiefs drove 63 yards in 10 plays to get on the board, with a five yard touchdown run by senior Shakel Holmes on the first play of the fourth quarter. The extra point try by senior Brad Lowery was wide left, making the score 14-6 in favor of the Seahawks.

The Chiefs forced the Seahawks to punt after a time consuming drive and had one more shot to tie the game, but wound up turning the ball over on downs with two minutes left in the game. The Seahawks ran out the clock and finished with a 14-6 district win over the Chiefs.

The Chiefs finished the game with 146 yards of rushing offense, led by senior Jeremy Jackson with 73 yards on seven carries and junior Dustin Yuhasz with 47 yards on 14 carries. The Chiefs’ quarterbacks, senior Brad Lowery and sophomore Brandon Sheets, were a combined 0 for 6 passing, with Lowery throwing one interception.

The Chiefs gave up 206 yards to the Seahawks; 194 rushing and 12 passing. The defense was led by junior defensive lineman, Lonnie Gardner, with eight tackles and junior linebacker, Levi Gideons, with seven tackles. The Chiefs have an open week next Friday and will play again at Bozeman on September 25th.

Lincoln Beats The Pelicans For Championship

September 14, 2009

The Pelicans will have to settle for second best, as the Lincoln Saltdogs claimed the game and the championship with a 2-1 win on Sunday night in Pensacola. Despite outhitting the Saltdogs 11-8, Pensacola left 10 runners on base in the fifth game of the best-of-five American Association Championship Series.

pelssun.jpgThe Saltdogs put up a run in the very first inning. Josh Burrus walked to start the game and moved to second on an Albenis Machado sacrifice bunt. Argelis Nunez knocked in Burrus with a base hit and Lincoln led 1-0.

Another Lincoln run scored in the top of the fifth inning, as Phil Hawke led off with a double and moved to third before Shawn McGill drove him in with a sacrifice fly to rightfield.

Pensacola had the makings of a huge bottom of the fifth. Marcos Rodriguez singled, Chase Burch followed with a base hit, and Dallas Christison doubled to bring Rodriguez home. Palmisano walked to load the bases, but the Pelicans would strand the three runners, and the 2-1 Lincoln lead would go final.

Kieran Mattison took the loss after tossing six innings, yielding both of Lincoln’s runs on six hits and two walks. Mattison struck out five Saltdogs in the effort. Francisco Butto pitched innings seven and eight while walking two and striking out one, giving up a hit. Ron Hill tossed a scoreless ninth allowing one hit.

Marshall McDougall led all Pelicans with a 3-4 evening, and Marcos Rodriguez and Lou Palmisano went 2-4, with Rodriguez knocking a double. Dallas Christison had the only Pelicans’ RBI.

This was the first appearance in the American Association playoffs for the Pelicans, and Talmadge Nunnari’s first stint as field manager.

Pelicans Force Championship-Deciding Fifth Game with 7-2 Victory

September 13, 2009

The Pelicans and Saltdogs will play the deciding game five of the American Association Championship Series Sunday at 4:05 p.m. after Pensacola topped Lincoln 7-2 Saturday night. The Saltdogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Pensacola closed within one after the fifth, and scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Both starting pitchers were fantastic, as Pensacola’s Dane DeValk and Lincoln’s Jarrett Gardner combined to allow just four runs while striking out 14.

The Saltdogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Rafael Alvarez doubled and scored on a single by Gavin Dickey. Lincoln added another run when Shawn McGill hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth.

The Pelicans would close the gap to one in the bottom of the fifth inning when Marcos Rodriguez broke up Gardner’s no-hitter with a triple. Dallas Christison hit a bloop single to right field, plating Rodriguez and cutting Lincoln’s lead to 2-1.

Pensacola rallied in the last of the eighth to force a game five. Palmisano singled with one out, and Darby singled as well. Kevin Reynolds hit Palmisano in with a base hit to tie the game and move Darby to third, and Jason Diaz put a bunt down that moved Darby 90 feet to provide the winning run. Four more Pelicans would score as Antoin Gray was intentionally walked and Marshall McDougall hit a two RBI double to score Reynolds and Diaz. Rodriguez was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Burch walked to force home Gray. McDougall scored from third when Dallas Christison hit a sacrifice fly to left to give the Pelicans a 7-2 lead.

Dane DeValk pitched seven innings for Pensacola, yielding two runs on three hits. Devalk struck out a season-high nine batters without allowing a walk. Ron Hill allowed only a hit in the eighth inning, striking out one, and though Hunter Davis gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth inning, no runs would score and the Pelicans will compete for the championship Sunday.

Tickets to Sunday’s 4:05 p.m. deciding game five are available now online at www.pensacolapelicans.com, via phone at (850) 934-8444, or in person at the Pelicans Box Office, open at 3 p.m. at Pelican Park on the campus of the University of West Florida. Tickets start at just $9.

Jay Royals Slam Holmes County 28-7

September 12, 2009

The Jay Royals opened their football season in big way Friday night, slamming Holmes County 28-7.

The Royals were three for three inside the three — three times the Blue Devils were inside the three ,and three times the Royals defense prevented them from scoring.

On their opening drive, the Royals were on the board after a Steven Brabham quarterback keeper. Brabham scored again in the second quarter. Both kicks were good, the Royals were up 14-0 in Bonifay.

With about three minutes to go in the half, Holmes County scored on a 24-yard touchdown pass.

In the third, the Royals’ Rush Hendricks rushed 56 yards to the one. A dive into the end zone from Hendricks and a good kick put the Royals on top 21-7 with about nine minutes in the third.

With 4:25 in the half, QB Brabham had a 56-yard TD pass to  Hunter Boutwell for another half dozen. The kick was good, as the Jay Royals beat Holmes County 28-7.

Pensacola High Beats Tate

The first three quarters were scoreless. A 12-yard pass with 7:23 to go in the game from Jalen Spencer to David Giannotti  put Pensacola High on the board. A good kick, and the PHS was up 7-0.
