Cottage Hill Gets Past Flomaton 31-28 In Overtime

The Flomaton Hurricanes came with a one yard of an overtime win Friday night, but the Canes fells short with a 31-28 loss to Cottage Hill.
Flomaton had scored with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Austin Patterson and a 27-yard pass to Jacob Newton. The Hurricanes also had a 47-yard touchdown run from James Jackson. Then the Canes took a 28-21 lead in the fourth on 48-yard TD pass from Newton to James Dean. But Cottage Hill answered with 3:06 to go, tying the game at 28-28.
Cottage Hill managed a 27-yard field goal in the overtime period. The Cane’s drove to the one yard line in OT, but the Warriors stopped Ryheem Dixon short of the end zone.
The Flomaton Hurricanes (4-2, 2-2) will be at home next Friday night against Leroy.
Catholic Beats Tate 56-30

The Catholic Crusaders amassed over 500 yards in a 56-30 defeat of the Tate Aggies Friday night.
The Aggies were up 24-21 at the half, but Tate’s defense was unable to stop the Crusaders, including Marquis Sumler who had 209 yards and four touchdowns.
In the first quarter Tate scored with a 7-yard run from Tydarrul Carmichael and a 79-yard pass from Thumper Grice to Lorenzo Long. The only score of the second quarter came from the Aggies’ Josh Dees with a five yard run just 38 seconds before the half.
The only other points for Tate came from Dees with a one-yard touchdown with 5:13 to go in the fourth quarter.
High School Volleyball: Northview Takes On Catholic

Catholic downed the Northview Lady Chiefs in varsity and junior varsity volleyball Thursday, while the 9th grade Lady Chiefs beat the Crusaders.
Varsity
The Chiefs dropped a four game set to the Crusaders, 13-25, 11-25, 15-25.
“The varsity team played hard tonight. The effort they displayed through out the matches was wonderful. We just have to work on bringing our mistake level down. We hurt ourselves more than the other team hurt us,” Head Coach Betty Heaton said.
Shawna Montgomery had four kills, two blocks and two digs for the Lady Chiefs, while Ashley Digmon recorded two assists, two digs and two aces. Kara Hardin added two aces and one dig, and Raylin Spence had on assist and three digs.
The Northview varsity team is 5-12 overall and 3-1 in district play.
Junior Varsity
The Northview JV team fell to Catholic, 20-25, 17-25.
“The JV team played well tonight. We are working on increasing the communication on the court,” Heaton said.
Madison Arrington had two aces for the Lady Chiefs. Danielle Steadham had one kill and a block, and Taylor Roberson added one kill, one ace and a dig.
The JV Chiefs are 3-8 overall.
9th Grade
The 9th grade Lady Chiefs improved to 3-0 with a two game sweep of the Catholic Crusaders, 25-15, 25-15.
“The 9th grade team did a great job of increasing the communication on the court. It made a real difference in their game tonight,” Heaton said.
Mallory Wiggins had four assists and five aces for Northview, while Paeton Hadley added four assists and two aces. Ali Martin recorded eight kills and two aces.
Jay Outpaces Northview In Girls’ Cross Country

The Jay Royals outpaced the Northview Chiefs in a cross country meet hosted by Jay High School, with every runner for Jay setting a personal record or season’s best time.
The top ten runners for the meet were:

The Royals will host the JD Mac Invitational at the Jay City Park on October 30.

“Our varsity has really done a great job stepping up and playing every ball until the end,” said Head Coach Betty Heaton. “However, we really need to improve our serving and serve receive. If we pick those two areas up we have every chance of going into the playoffs.”

Northview, Flomaton Meet In Dig Pink Breast Cancer Event; Honor Survivors Including Coach

Breast cancer awareness was the real winner Tuesday in Bratt as the Northview Chiefs hosted the Flomaton Hurricanes in Dig Pink high school volleyball.
And for one coach, the night was more than meaningful.
Northview Assistant Coach Barbara Luker is a breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed in 2001, Luker has beaten he disease. In 2010, she was among the organizers of Tuesday’s Dig Pink event.
“It means a lot to see them out here playing for the cause,” Luker said the dozens of girls that took part in Dig Pink. “But it means so much more to know they have learned a lot this week about breast cancer and how to get checked.”
In fact, Luker said, some of the girls learned this week that breast cancer has already stricken some of their classmates.
“It’s a much more common thing than most people realize,” she said. “I’m so glad they have had the opportunity to learn about it.”

In the Dig Pink event at the varsity level, Flomaton defeated Northview in three consecutive games, 26-24, 27-25, 25-19.
The Lady Hurricanes were led by Jasmine Stackhouse with seven kills; Tara Gafford with eight blocks and Christina Gohagan with four aces and 22 assists.
Shawna Montgomery paced the Lady Chiefs with seven kills, four aces, three digs and half dozen blocks. Ashley Digmon had four assists and two digs for Northview, while Sarah Killam added one dig and a block.

FHSAA Moves Forward With Rural School Division To Include Northview, Jay

The Florida High School Athletic Association’s new Rural School Division moved a step closer to reality this week, with the group’s board of directors voting to continue the classification process.
Locally, both Northview and Jay high schools have expressed interest in taking part in the new classification.
Across the state, 44 schools have indicated interest in participating in the new division in girls and boys basketball, baseball and softball, with 34 also interested in football and 38 in girls volleyball. The classification policy for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years will be brought to the Board for a vote in November.
“The Board unanimously approved moving forward with the concept, which benefits a number of our member schools without detriment to any others,” said Executive Director Roger Dearing. “This is a win-win situation for everyone.”
The invitation deadline for the new classification was September 15 for schools with students populations under 600 and located in areas designate rural by the Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development.
Schools in the rural division would compete within their own division and have their own playoff series for boys and girls basketball, baseball, football, softball and girls volleyball, and boys and girls soccer.

Middle School Football: Ernest Ward Beats Escambia Academy 14-8

The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles beat the Cougars of Escambia Academy 14-8 Tuesday evening in Canoe, Alabama.
The Eagles — the only middle school football team in Escambia County, Florida — will host Uriah on October 5 at 6 p.m. in Walnut Hill. Ernest Ward will be off October 12. EWMS will return to action at home on October 18 with another game against Escambia Academy.

Jay’s JV Royals Hand Flomaton Their First Loss Of The Season 36-30

The Jay Royals beat the Flomaton Hurricanes Tuesday night in hard fought junior varsity game. Jay scored the final tie-breaking touchdown with 46.5 seconds to go in the game and held off a final Hurricane drive for the win. Tate, Northview, Jay Take Top Three Spots In Cross Country Meet

The Tate Aggies finished first among the boy’s cross country teams in a Tuesday meet hosted by Jay High School, followed Northview in second and Jay in third.
Eighth grader Micah Kemp took the top spot among boys, finishing with a personal best time of 17:59. Josh Scott of Northview finished second with a time of 19:16, and Thomas Simmons of Tate came in third at 20:48.
