5K Race For The Blueberries Returns At Saturday’s Blueberry Jamboree

The Escambia County Neighborhoods and Community Services Bureau invites runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers to join the 5K Race for the Blueberries.
The event will be Saturday, June 12, beginning at 8 a.m. with a staggered start. The race will be one of the many fun activities offered at the Blueberry Jamboree, to be held at Barrineau Park Community Center and Historical Society, 6055 Barrineau Park School Road in Molino.
Pre-registration is $15. Registration forms can be found by clicking here or by calling (850) 475-5220. Registration is $20 on the day of the event. T-shirts will be given to all registrants and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners.

Cats Hold Off Pelicans 4-2; Sweep Double Header

The Fort Worth Cats (10-12) danced in and out of danger from the Pelicans (8-15) offense who loaded the bases three times, but were unable to cash in with the big hit. The Cats did enough offensively and pitched well to hold off the Pelicans for a 4-2 win Sunday.
The Cats led off the second inning with a double hit down the right field line by Rob Recuenco. Stantrel Smith followed with an RBI single to left field to give the Cats an early 1-0 lead.
The game was knotted at one when John Allen broke up the tie in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run double to deep right centerfield to score Nick McCoola and Brian Fryer. Those two runs made it a 3-1 lead for the Cats.
Fort Worth added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Rico Santana hit a swinging bunt for an RBI to score Rob Recuenco from third base and make it 4-1.
The Pelicans wouldn’t go down without a fight in their half of the seventh inning when the Pelicans loaded the bases with two outs and John Alonso got hit by a ball in the back. That hit on the back brought in Dallas Christison from third to make it 4-2. The bases remained loaded with Marcos Rodriguez at the plate. Cats closer Dustin Cameron would strike out Rodriguez to end the threat and game. Cameron gets his sixth save of the season.
Jason Fernandez (1-3) gets the win as he pitched five and two thirds, giving up no runs off four hits while striking out three.
Dane Devalk (0-4) takes the loss as he gives up three runs off six hits while striking out two.
Pensacola Pelicans Offense Lights Up in 11-4 Win Over Cats

John Alonso and Francisco Leandro both homered and combined for five RBI’s to lead the way for a Pelicans (8-13) win over the Cats (8-12) Friday night in Pensacola.
Antoin Gray picked up where he left off last night in the first inning when he doubled into left center which scored Joey Side from second base to give the Pels an early 1-0 lead.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning, John Alonso led if off with hitting a ball to deep centerfield and over the fence for his second homerun of the year. The homer gave the Pels a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning with Adolfo Gonzalez on second with two outs, Francisco Leandro ripped an RBI single right back up the middle to give Pensacola a 3-1 advantage.
Pensacola added two more runs in the fourth inning with back to back two out RBI singles from Lou Palmisano and John Alonso to open the Pels lead to 6-1.
The Pels were up 7-1 when John Allen ripped a two- run double into left centerfield to drive in two runs for Fort Worth and make it 7-3.
The Pels led 8-4 in the eighth inning when Francisco Leandro belted a two run shot to right for his first homer of the year which gave Pensacola a 10-4 lead. Gray added an RBI single in the inning to make it 11-4.
Newest Pelican Randy Keisler (1-1) gets the win as he pitches six innings and gives up one run off eight hits while striking out six batters.
Joel Kirsten (1-2) takes the loss as he gives up six runs off eight hits in just four innings of work.
Molino 16U Lady Astros Are Tourney Runner-Ups

The Molino 16U Lady Astros softball team started their season as runner-ups in a recent USFA qualifier tournament in Daphne, Alabama.
The Astros lost in the elimination round to Voo Doo of New Orleans, only to face them again and beat them 4-3 in the semi-finals to advance to the championships. The Lady Astros came up short, losing 3-1 to Crossfire of Gulfport.
Pitching for the Lady Astros were Jami Ujvair, Tristen Faircloth and Heather Schaff. Molino had team batting average of over 400 for the tournament and only two errors in the championship game.

Pelicans Win Thriller Over Saints 5-4

The Pensacola Pelicans snapped a four game losing streak Thursday night. Antoin Gray singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to send the Pelicans (7-13) to an exciting 5-4 win over the Saints (9-10).
The Saints would get a run in the second inning when Brandon Carter hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Brent Krause and give St. Paul an early 1-0 lead.
Pensacola would answer back in a big way in the bottom half of the second inning when Chase Porch hit an RBI infield single with the bases loaded to score Lou Palmisano and tie the game up at 1. Dallas Christison would follow with a two run single to left field to bring in Joey Side and John Alonso to give the Pels a 3-1 lead.
With the score 3-2, Chase Porch hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Joey Side and make it a 4-2 lead for Pensacola.
St. Paul would get that run back in the seventh inning as Brandon Carter lined a double down the third base line to bring in Gerard Haran and make it 4-3.
The Saints would tie it up in the eighth inning when Haran lined a single infront of Porch in left field to bring in Jason Cooper and even up the score at 4.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Pelicans loaded the bases with nobody out. Antoin Gray followed as he dropped in a single to left field to score Dallas Christison and win the game for the Pelicans 5-4.
The win goes to Ron Hill (1-1) as he got the last out in the top half of the ninth inning.
The loss goes to Joe DAlessandro (0-1) as he gives up the RBI hit from Gray in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Wildcats Have Tri-County Little League’s Only Undefeated Season

The Fidelis Lady Wildcats Minor League Softball team finished the Tri-County Little League season undefeated — the only Tri-County Little League team in either baseball or softball to go undefeated this season.
The Wildcats are managed by Jimbo Lewis and coached by Ricky Tagert. The team was sponsored by Siwicki Plumbing.

Fourth Loss In A Row For The Pensacola Pelicans

The Saints (9-9) scored in the first four innings of the game off Pelican starter Kevin Cooper to lead the way for a 9-6 win over the Pensacola Pelicans (6-13) Wednesday night. The loss was the fourth in a row for Pensacola.
The Saints took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Brent Krause hit a sacrifice fly to right centerfield to score Coby Smith from third and give St. Paul a 1-0 lead.
The Pelicans answered back in the bottom half of the first inning when Saints right hander walked the bases loaded to set it up for Javier Brito at the plate. After three straight walks, Brito rifled a single into centerfield to bring home Francisco Leandro and Adolfo Gonzalez and give the Pels a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, the bases would be loaded again with one out where Lou Palmisano would line a two-run single to left field and give Pensacola a 4-1 lead.
With the score 4-3, the Saints would have runners on first and second with one out when Brandon Carter singled to right field to score Cooper and tie the game 4-4. Steve Mays would follow with a single to left to bring in Gerard Haran to give the Saints a 5-4 lead. Steve Butler added a sacrifice fly RBI to left field to score Carter and give St. Paul a 6-4 lead.
It was a 7-5 lead for the Saints in the 8th inning when Ole Sheldon belted his eighth homerun of the year as he turned on an outside fastball thrown by Pelican reliever Jason Franzblau. It was a two run shot and it gave St. Paul a 9-5 lead.
Joey Side would line a RBI double to left centerfield in the bottom half of the eighth to score Lou Palmisano and get a run back to make it 9-6.
The Pelicans put runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off closer Hunter Davis. John Alonso represented the tying run at the plate and Davis got Alonso to hit a chopper to first where Jason Cooper tagged him out on the stomach to end the game.
Jeff Plefka (2-0) gets the win as he pitched three and two thirds and didn’t give up any runs off four hits. Former Pelican closer and current Saints closer Hunter Davis closed out the ninth inning for his sixth save in seven chances this season.
Kevin Cooper (1-2) takes the loss as he gave up seven earned runs off ten hits through seven innings pitched.
Saints Beat Pelicans 5-1

Saints (8-9) starter Zach Peterson pitched a beauty and extended the Pelicans (6-12) losing streak to three games by winning by a final score of 5-1 Tuesday night.
The Saints would get on the board early as Jason Cooper dropped a double down the left field line to score Josh Alley and Ole Sheldon to give St. Paul an early 2-0 lead after just a half inning played in the contest.
With the score 2-1 in the second inning, the Saints had runners at second and third with one out when Coby Smith hit a chopper to third that Alonso grabbed and airmailed a throw to first which scored both Brandon Carter and Steve Mays to give the the Saints a 4-1 lead. Later in the inning with runners on first and third with two outs, Jason Cooper hit an infield single on the right side of the field to score Smith and make it 5-1.
All the scoring would be done in the first two innings of the game.
Ryan Morse (0-1) gets the win as he only had to throw 70 pitches over six innings only giving up a run off six hits while striking out three on the night. Zach Peterson pitched a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth inning to get his first save of the season.
Dane DeValk (0-3) gets the loss as he gives up three runs off six hits while striking out five batters in seven innings pitched.

Atmore Pool Now Open; Register Now For Swimming Lessons

The newly renovated city pool at Tom Byrne Park in Atmore reopened Tuesday, and registration for swimming and tennis lessons is underway.
Admission to the pool is just $1 for ages 17 and under and $1.50 for 18 and over. Swimming and tennis lessons are $35 for a three week session.

Six-Run 4th Inning Drives Captains Win Over The Pelicans

Randy Keisler’s debut for the Pelicans was a start he would like to forget as the Captains (8-8) banged out seven runs off nine hits off the lefty in rout to a 14-4 victory over the Pelicans (6-10) Sunday.
Shreveport-Bossier struck first in the first inning when Jorge Alvarez hit a two out chopper that snuck through the infield and into left field which scored Bryan Sabatella to give the Captains an early 1-0 lead.
A nightmare hit the Pelicans in the second inning as the Captains banged out 6 runs in the inning. The inning started with back to back walks thrown from Keisler. A bunt was put down from Brian Peterson down the third base line where the ball bounced out of Brito’s glove from a throw from Dallas Christison and helped bring in Palmer Karr Jr. to make it 2-0. Uriak Marquez singled in Adres Rodriguez to make it 3-0. Bryan Sabatella then doubled to deep right centerfield to score Peterson to give the Captains a 4-0 lead. One out later, the bleeding wouldn’t stop there as Christopher Garcia rifled a single to right to bring in Marquez and Sabatella to make it 6-0. Alvarez would follow with a RBI blooping single into right center to score Garcia and make it 7-0.
The Pelicans would battle back in the fourth inning when Chase Porch singled to left with the bases loaded to score Javier Brito and John Alonso and cut the deficit to five 7-2. One out later, Francisco Leandro hit a bouncing into right field to score Palmisano from second base to make it 7-3.
The Captains would tack on two more runs in the sixth inning off Kevin Johnson to make it 9-3 with six innings in the books.
In the seventh inning, the Captains would reach the double digit mark when Uriak Marquez lined a double to left centerfield over the outstretched glove of Porch to score Andres Rodriguez to make it 10-3. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, Jovanny Rosario lined a single to right field which scored Peterson and Marquez to make it 12-3. Garcia then shot a single to left field to score two more runs to make it 14-3.
In the 8th inning for the Pelicans, Palmisano hit a sharp single to center to score Rodriguez to make it 14-4.
Osvaldo Rodriguez (4-0) gets the win as he gave up three runs off four hits through five innings pitched.
Randy Keisler (0-1) gets the loss as he gave up seven runs-five earned off nine hits and struck out five through five innings pitched.
