The First Annual Chief Challenge 5K Run/Walk is coming to Northview High School.
The event will be held Saturday, October 2 at 8:30 a.m. at the school campus in Bratt. “The course is not your typical 5K race. It includes a variety of terrains and challenging hills around the campus,” according to event organizers.

Ernest Ward Beats Excel 34-8 (With Photo Gallery)

The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles improved to 2-0 with a big 34-8 defeat of the Excel Panthers Tuesday evening.

Fueled by a 34-yard run by Hunter Sherouse, the Eagles were set to be the first on the scoreboard. Eighth grader Jaran Miles picked up the first touchdown for EWMS with 2:54 to go in the first quarter. Miles’ attempt at a two point conversion was stopped just inches short of the goal line by a host of Panthers’ defenders. 6-0, EWMS on top.
Less than two minutes later, with 1:04 to go in the first, Miles repeated with another touchdown, this one from about 20 yards out. A two point conversion pass was caught by Jaylen Parker to expand the Ernest Ward lead to 14-0.
Late in the second quarter, Austin Whitehead plowed up the middle from a few yards out for another Ernest Ward touchdown. Another two point pass caught by Parker, and the Eagles were up 22-0 with 3:59 to go in the first half.
In the third quarter, Miles struck again, with about a 60-yard touchdown run. A missed two-pointer, and the Eagles marched on 28-0 with 5:04 in the third quarter of play.
Excel picked up their only score of the night with a long run past midfield with 3:27 on the clock in the third. A good point after attempt, and the score was 28-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles struck again, widening their lead to 34-8. The Panthers came close to one more touchdown from the one-yard line with 1.1 seconds on the clock, but the Eagles’ defense held strong for the win.

The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles — the only middle school team in Escambia County, Fla. — will be off next week. They will be on the road September 21 against Uriah.

NHS Varsity, JV Beat PCA In Volleyball

The Northview Lady Chiefs beat Pensacola Christian Academy on the volleyball court Tuesday evening.
At the varsity level, the Lady Chiefs (2-1, 2-0) defeated PCA in four games — 26-24, 25-19, 25-16.
“Varsity did a great job of implementing a faster offense in tonight’s game against PCA. It is something that we are continuously working on putting into our program and I felt that we are going to get establish,” said Northview Head Coach Betty Heaton.

In JV action, the Lady Chiefs beat PCA in a two-game match — 25-18, 25-19.
“I am very proud of the JV team for the way they worked hard on every play to get three touches. Every play you could see them focusing on getting a pass, set, and hit. They did a great job working together. We still need to work on communication on the court, but I believe that will come,” Heaton said.

JV Royals Beat J.U. Blacksher; Flomaton Beats Baker (Updated With Flomaton Photos)

The Jay High School junior varsity football team defeated J.U. Blacksher 49-12 Tuesday night in Jay.
The JV Royals will make the short trip to Hurricane Field next Tuesday to take on Flomaton High School. game time will be 6 p.m.
The Flomaton junior varsity Hurricanes beat the Baker Gators 14-6.

Escambia Grad On Sports Illustrated Cover

An Escambia County School graduate is featured on the cover this week’s Sports Illustrated — and Crimson Tide fans are not going to want to miss it.
Sophomore Alabama running back Trent Richardson appears on the cover, leaping over a defender from San Jose State during the Tide’s season-opening 48-3 win. He is a graduate of Escambia High School.
Saturday was Richardson’s first starting game, with 146 yards and two touchdowns.
The “College Football Opening Statements. Breakout Players and Programs in Week 1″ cover is the fifth cover for the Crimson Tide in a year — more than any other pro or college team. It marked the ninth SI cover since Nick Saban took over in January 2007.

Football was king Saturday across the North Escambia area.
After a nearly three decade absence, Jay Junior League football returned Saturday with a great turnout to support the Royals against Pace Blue. In Flomaton, teams from across Escambia and Monroe counties in Alabama held a Jamboree. In Cantonment, the Cowboys welcomed the Milton Panthers to the Ranch, and Northwest Escambia took on the Milton Panthers Black team in Walnut Hill.
“It is an overwhelming joy to see these kid involved, Jeffery Rogers, president of Jay Junior League Football said. Saturday marked the first junior league football games in Jay in 28 years.

900th Win: Local Men Cheer On Century’s Buck Showalter

Century’s Buck Showalter was handed his 900th Major League win Saturday night as the Baltimore Orioles topped the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4.
And among the 18,943 fans in Baltimore a group of friends from the North Escambia were cheering on Showalter.
Ronny Wedgeworth, Steve Stanton, Eddie Hammond, Kenny Felh and Richard Armstrong have had the opportunity to see the Orioles up close and personal with Showalter all weekend. They have also had the chance to do a little batting practices with the O’s.
Stanton played football with Showalter at Century High School. Wedgeworth attended Flomaton High School and played baseball against Showalter and the Blackcats.

Northview Beats Graceville 24-6 (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs opened their season Friday night with a big road win over Graceville, 24-6
The Chiefs ended their first possession with a 27-yard field goal from Lance Bushaw. Then, with 5:26 on the clock in the first, Graceville’s Tigers were on the board with a touchdown from the six-yard line toe end their first possession. The Tigers missed their two point attempt, taking the lead 6-3.
Then with 1:24 to go in the first, senior Taylor Martin had a two-yard touchdown dash. A good kick, and the Chiefs returned to the lead, 10-6.
The Chiefs managed a drive inside the Graceville 10 before attempting and missing a fourth down field goal with a second shy of six minutes to go in the half.
With 3:44 remaining in the half, NHS intercepted the ball at midfield. But the Chiefs fumbled on the Tiger’s 40. It was Graceville’s ball with 2:25 in the second.

At the 1:05 mark in the second, senior Dustin Yuhasz returned a Graceville punt 65 yards for a touchdown. A good extra point, and the Chiefs were up 17-6. Northview
drove to the one-yard line with 1.3 seconds on the clock in the first half. But they were unable to make the play before the buzzer. Headed to the lockers, the Chiefs were ahead of the Gators 17-6.
The third quarter was all about defense as both teams were scoreless.
In the fourth, with 10:46 on the board, quarterback Brandon Sheets was in for another Northview touchdown from five yards out. A textbook kick through the uprights, and the Chiefs sealed their 24-6 victory over the Graceville Tigers.
The Chiefs amassed 354 total yards against Graceville, with 281 yards on the ground.
Northview (1-0, 0-0) will be on the road again next week for their first district game against South Walton.

Escambia County Beats B.C. Rain 43-15

The Escambia County Blue Devils beat B.C. Rain Friday night in Atmore 43-15.
The Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0) were led by Chris Johnson and Rico Stallworth with two touchdowns each.
Johnson’s touchdowns were one and 31 yard runs. Stallworth’s TD’s were one and 26 yards. An interception by Torian Brown was ran back 75 yards for another touchdown , and Chris Smith had a one-yard touchdown dash.
The Blue Devils, under first year Head Coach Mark Heaton, will be on the road next Friday night against a tough UMS Wright team. UMS Wright is coming off a 47-0 defeat of W.S. Neal Friday night.
