Leroys Beats Flomaton 55-21

Leroy handed Flomaton their third region loss the season Friday night, 55-21.
The ‘Canes touchdowns came from A.J. Odom from a year out in the second, an 83-yarder from Nico Dixon and a 91-yard long distance run from Jerry Carpenter.
Flomaton (4-3, 2-3) will be on the road in Millry next Friday night.
With the win, the Leroy Bears clamied the 2A Region 1 title.
Happy Homecoming: Escambia County Beats Saraland

The Escambia County Blue Devils secured a spot in the Class 4A, Region 1 playoffs with a Friday homecoming win over Saraland, 27-6.
Atmore’s Blue Devils took a first quarter lead on a four-yard touchdown pass from Rico Stallworth to senior Chris Smith. With a good kick from Tyler Nero, the Blue Devils were up 7-0 in their first homecoming game under new Head Coach Mark Heaton.
Saraland added six in the second, but the Blue Devils answered with a touchdown run from mid-field from Marshall Rolin. A Nero kick, and the Blue Devils led 14-6.
ECHS scored again with a 28-yard pass from Stallworth to Neiko Williams and a four-yard run from Smith.
The Blue Devils (5-2, 3-2) will host Jackson next week.
JV Chiefs Chomp Baker (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs chomped the Baker Gators 46-32 Thursday night in junior varsity football.

The Chiefs took the lead less than three minutes into the game with a 26-yard touchdown from Dy’shun White. Chad Smith was in for the two point conversion, and NHS was on top 8-0. With 56.7 second to go in the the first quarter, Baker tied it up 8-8. The Chiefs struck again seconds later with a 70-yard touchdown run from LaMikal Banks. The Chiefs’ point after attempt failed, and they held a 14-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Gators tied the game up 14-14 less than a minute into the second quarter. Then with 6:04 remaining in the half, sophomore Kevin Vaughan had three-yard touchdown dash for Northview. White was in for the two-pointer, and the Chiefs held a 22-14 advantage that would stand heading into halftime.
The Gators scored again in the third quarter, 22-20. Then with 37.2 seconds on the clock in the third, Chad Smith scored for the Chiefs. Northview was successful with a two point attempt, with Vaughan tripping his way across the goal line for a 30-20 lead.
Vaughan added another TD in the fourth quarter. The point after attempt was no good, 36-20. Baker answered with another touchdown, but their point after pass was picked off by Tyler Gifford, 36-26 with 6:14 to go in the game.
With 2:17 on the clock, Gifford grabbed an attempted Gator touchdown pass in the end zone for a safety, 38-26. Sophomore Aaron Floyd added another Chiefs’ touchdown with Tullis successful on the two point conversion, 46-26.
The Gators drove to second and goal with 20.5 seconds on the clock, but they were stopped by a host of Chiefs.
The Northview JV Chiefs will host West Florida Tech next Thursday night at 6:00 before wrapping up their season in Atmore against the Escambia County Blue Devils on October 25.

The varisty Northview Lady Chiefs had a district loss Thursday night to Baker, while the JV Lady Chiefs pickup up a win.

“We had a lot of up and down play tonight. It is something we have been working on fixing. Next week are two more district games. We need to come out and play hard to secure a top place for the district tournament,” Head Coach Betty Heaton said.

Record Setting Run For Jay’s Cross Country Team

The Jay High School Girls Cross Country team posted their fastest times of the season with 9 of 13 runners setting personal records at a meet earlier this week at Pace High School.
Robin Blackman led the Royals with a personal record of 21:27. The top five was rounded out by Leely Trevino with a time of 21:30, Jessica Thornton with 22:23, Allison Blair with 22:31, and Caristyn Golden with 22:48. Jay placed third in a field of nine teams.

Dobson Takes Second In Disney Half Marathon
October 7, 2010
Matt Dobson of Jay finished second in the inaugural Disney World Wine & Dine Half-Marathon at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando.
Dobson, 41, was only 13 seconds behind the winner, Anton Van Zyl, 37, of Fort Lauderdale. Dobson’s time was 1:15:04. The 13.1 mile race was the first nighttime half marathon at night.
Dobson, a graudate of Jay High School, holds the distinction of being the only American to win the Disney World Marathon Championship with a first place finish in 2004.
Dobson’s upcoming races include the Pensacola Marathon on November 14, the Disney Marathon in January and the 115th Boston Marathon in April, 2011.
Dobson finished the 2004 Boston Marathon 49th overall out of 20,000 runners and was the 16th fastest American.
HS Volleyball: Northview Splits Varsity, JV Wins With Freeport

Northview’s varsity fell to Freeport while Northview’s junior varsity beat Freeport in Tuesday volleyball action.
Varsity
Northview lost to Freeport in five games, 17-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-13, 7-15.
“The Varsity team struggled to find the stability we needed through the first and second game. In the third and fourth game they came out and played hard and were much more consistent. In the fifth and final game the stability they lacked in the first and second game came back and we were unable to fix it before the game was over,” said Head Coach Betty Heaton.
Shawna Montgomery lead the Chiefs with 30 kills, one dig, one block tree aces, while Sarah Killam had 16 assists and three kills. Josie Doucette, a junior, had two aces and six kills.
The varsity Chiefs are 5-13 overall, 3-2 in the district.
Junior Varsity
The Northview JV team beat Freeport in two games, 25-14, 25-15.
“The JV did a great job coming out strong and maintaining it though out the second game,” Heaton said.
Madison Arrington had one kill, two aces and three assists for the Chiefs. Danielle Steadham recorded four kills, one block, one dig and one ace; and Lana Clayton added seven kill and seven aces.
The JV Chiefs are 4-8 overall.
Ernest Ward Middle Undefeated After 30-6 Win Over Blacksher (With Photo Gallery)

The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles improved to 6-0 with a win over J.U. Blacksher of Uriah Tuesday night, 30-6.
The Eagles struck early, with eighth grader Cameron Newsome in for a 60 yard touchdown less than a minute into the first quarter. With Jaylen Parker in for a good two point conversion, the Eagles were up 8-0.
Ernest Ward scored again with 5:12 to go in the first quarter with a Jaran Miles touchdown. Miles was in for a successful two point conversion, expanding the Eagles’ lead to 16-0.
Ernest Ward will go for win number seven and a perfect season on October 19 when they host the Cougars of Escambia County.

Chiefs Are Only Undefeated District 1-A Team

The Northview Chiefs are on top of District 1-A halfway through the football season. The Chiefs and the Freeport Bulldogs are the only teams undefeated in District 1-A football. The Chiefs also have a perfect record overall, while Freeport has one non-district loss.
The Chiefs will celebrate homecoming Friday night against Holmes County (3-1, 3-1). Holmes County’s only loss was to Vernon two weeks ago. Freeport will put their perfect district record on the line against South Walton (3-2, 2-2).
The Jay Royals, the other North Escambia area team in District 1-A, are winless this season.
