JV Football Season Begins Thursday For Northview Chiefs

The 2011 junior varsity football season begins Thursday for Northview High School traveling to Pensacola to take on West Florida High School.

Here is the 2011 schedule for the JV Chiefs:

  • Sept 1. — at West Florida — 5 pm
  • Sept 12 — at Atmore — 6:30 pm
  • Sept 22 — at Baker — 6:30 pm
  • Sept 26 — Atmore  — 6:30 pm
  • Oct 13 — West Florida — 6:30 pm

Jay QB Suspended After Friday Night Altercation

An altercation during a Friday night football classic between Jay and Baker  has led to the suspension of two players.

An altercation erupted during the game, resulting in the ejection of Jay quarterback Conner Weekes and Baker defender Billy Cotton. Game officials said punches were thrown during the altercation.

The Florida High School Athletic Association has suspended Weekes and Cotton for six games. Both schools are appealing the ruling.

Jay lost the game to Baker, 27-13.

New Poll Ranks Northview No. 2 In Florida 1A Football

The Northview Chiefs are ranked No. 2 in Florida in Class 1A in a preseason football poll released Monday by the Associated Press.

Jefferson County is No. 1 in the poll with more points that Northview, although Northview actually received more first place votes from sportswriters across the state.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are the No. 1 Class 1A football team in Florida, according to a poll released recently by the national sports website Maxpreps.com.

The Chiefs lost in the state semifinals last year, just one win away from the state championship game.

The Chiefs opened 2011 with a 26-17 preseason fall classic win over Bay High School last Friday night. Northview begins regular season play September 9 on the road at Marianna.

Ernest Ward Middle Football Season Begins Thursday

The football season begins Thursday evening for Ernest Ward Middle School.

The Golden Eagles will play host to Perdido at 6 p.m. Thursday to open their seven game schedule. Ernest Ward Middle was undefeated last year. EWMS is the only public middle school in Escambia County, Florida, to offer football. As a result, all games are against Alabama schools.

The complete 2011 schedule is as follows:

  • 9/1 — Perdido
  • 9/6 — at Excel
  • 9/13 — OPEN
  • 9/20 — Uriah
  • 9/27 — Escambia Academy
  • 10/4 — at Uriah
  • 10/11 — Excel
  • 10/18 — at Escambia Academy

All games are at 6 p.m.

Baker 25 -  Jay 13

The debut of new Jay High School Head Coach Kent Smith did not go as well as he had planned during Friday night’s preseason game. The Royals lost to the Baker Gators 25-13 in Jay. The Royals, 0-10 last year, will open the 2011 regular season at home next week against Rocky Bayou.

Alabama

Flomaton 47 — W.S. Neal 14

A hurricane below into East Brewton Friday night, and it did a lot damage. The Flomaton Hurricanes beat W.S. Neal 47-14. Rhyeem Dixon had three touchdown runs of 45, 4 and 60 years for the ‘Canes. He also threw a 32-yard TD pass to Neiko Robinson. The Canes, now 1-0 will host Southern Choctaw next Friday night.

T.R. Miller 37 — Escambia County 31

The T.R. Miller Tigers squeaked out a win over the Escambia County High School Blue Devils of Atmore Friday night — with just 0.4 seconds on the clock. Escambia County had a 86-year kickoff return by Tyjustin Brown and a 15-yard TD run from Tywon Dixon during the night.. The Blue Devils will be on the road next Saturday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium against B.C. Rain.

Clarke Prep 24 — Escambia Academy 20

For the second year in a row, Clarke Prep defeated Escambia Academy Friday night in Canoe. The Cougars, fresh off a big 30-2 win last week over Sparta, are now 1-1 on the young 2011 season.

Northview Chiefs Stop Bay Tornadoes In Preseason Game (With Photo Gallery)

The Northview Chiefs beat Panama City Bay Friday night in Bratt, 26-17, in a preseason classic.

The Chiefs were first on the board in the first quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run from Kevin Vaughan. Vaughan sealed the deal with a good point after attempt, 7-0 Chiefs.

The Tornadoes answered with about three minutes in the half to tie it up at 7-7. Northview found the end zone again with about two minutes to go with a 49-yard pass from Brandon Sheets to Austin Albritton. Vaughan’s kick was off the uprights, making it 13-7 at the half.

Northview scored again in the fourth with a 4-yard run from Sheets and a missed kick and a 20-yard pass from Sheets to Albritton and good Vaughan kick with13 seconds to go.

Sheets was 4-of-6 in the air for 112 yards; Albritton was caught three of those passes for 83 yards. Overall, the Chiefs had almost 300 yards in total offense.

The No. 1 ranked Chiefs will sit out next Friday night with an open date before traveling to Marianna on September 9.

Tate Falls To Pensacola High (With Photo Gallery)

The Tate Aggies lost their preseason classic 35-14  to Pensacola High.

The Tigers were on top 7-0  at the end of the first quarter in the two-quarter game. The Aggies scored in the second quarter on a 5-yard pass from David Moorhead to Caleb Norris. Hagen Mancuso’s point after attempt was successful. Tate scored again in the second on a 3-yard run from Moorhead and another good point after from Mancuso.

The Tate Aggies, coming off a 3-7 season last year, and Head Coach Ed Rigby will look for redemption in the first regular season game next Friday night at 7:30. The Aggies will take on Washington at home in Pete Gindl Stadium.

Northview High Fans Turn Out To Meet The Chiefs

Hundreds of people turned out Thursday night to meet the Chiefs at Northview High School.

They were introduced to the JV and varsity cheerleaders, the JV and varsity football team, the coach staff and a performance by the new NHS Dance Team.

The Northview Chiefs defeated Central and Jay in varsity high school volleyball action Thursday afternoon.

The Chiefs defeated Central in a two-game match, 25-21 and 25-22.
