Ernest Ward Honors Fall Sports Standouts

The sixth annual Ernest Ward Middle School Sports Banquet was held Wednesday afternooon. Students were honored for their participation in football, cross country, cheerleading, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball and band.

Girl’s Weightlifting: Northview Defeats Jay

Northview High School defeated Jay High School in a girl’s weightlifting meet at Jay.

Northview finished  first with 45 points, while Jay had 34 points.

Class 1A Championship: Jefferson County Beats Chipley

December 10, 2011

With 40 points in the second half, Jefferson County beat Chipley 47-13 to claim the Florida Class 1A football championship Friday night in Orlando.

Jefferson County and Chipley were tied 7-7 early in the third until Jefferson County exploded to take a 33-7 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

It was the sixth state championship for Jefferson County (9-5). Chipley, coming off a win last week over the Northview Chiefs, finished at 11-3.

Century’s Lashley Steps Down As Head Coach Of Navarre Raiders

December 10, 2011

Former Century resident Chad Lashley stepped down Friday as the head coach of the Navarre Raiders.

Lashley told team members that he was stepping down to spend more time with his family — wife Amanda Wiggins Lashley, who is from Walnut Hill, and the couple’s three children Taylor, Aden and Gavin.

He said he has plans to remain in coaching, just not as head coach.

One More Game: Chiefs Quarterback Brandon Sheets On All-Star Team With Other Local Players

Northview High School quarterback Brandon Sheets will join several of his fellow Chiefs in one more football game as the West takes on the East next week in the Subway High School All-Star Football Game.

Sheets was suspended from his final game in the state playoff series by the Florida High School Athletic Association, forced to sit out the state semifinal game last week against Chipley. Sheets will join West Florida Jaguar star quarterback Kyle Faxlanger in the QB position for the West team’s offense. Faxlanger led the Jags to the best season ever in the school’s history.

The West All-Star Team, representing Escambia County, will include several other North Escambia area players: Northview’s Montaio Mitchell, Sean Knight, Brian Ross, and Austin Albritton; Tate’s Scott Ryals, Jacob Lasky, Cameron Covington and Hagan Mancuso;West Florida’s Jalen Jones, Joe Jackson, Antwon Carter, Jorgen Stolsig, Jake Morris and Coach Harry Lees; and McDavid resident Dak Sims who lives in McDavid.

The East All-Star Team, representing Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties, will include local players Sammy Jones and Haden McCaskill from Jay High.

The game will be played next Friday, December 16 at Woodham Middle School. Admission is $7, or $5 with a canned food donation to Manna Food Pantries.

Escambia Charter 64, Northview 60

Zack Barrow led the Chiefs with 18, while Roderick Woods added 14. Brandon Sheets contributed 10 for Northview, as Dyshan White and Jacob Gibson scored six each. Blake McCall had four for the Chiefs.

The Northview varsity boys will next play in the Jay Christmas Tournament December 12-14.

West Florida 63, Tate 5

The West Florida Jaguars beat the Tate Aggies Thursday, 63-55 at West Florida.

Tate 48, West Florida 19

The Tate Lady Aggies defeated West Florida on Thursday, 48-19 in girls’ basketball action.

Northview Girls Get District Win Over Freeport

December 8, 2011

The Northview Varsity girls won their first district basketball game against Freeport by one — 47-46.

Shaquana Jones led the Lady Chiefs with 28 points, while Elaza Bates added nine. Danielle Steadham contributed four points. Taylor Byrd, Talia Syria and Jazzlyn Franklin each added two points for the Chiefs.

Atmore’s Linam Named To Another Academic Football Team

December 5, 2011

Former Atmore resident Josh Linam, already a member of the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District First Team, earned another prestigious honor Friday. The University of Central Florida Knights’ middle linebacker was voted onto the Conference USA All-Academic First Team, marking the second-straight season he was named to the squad.

Majoring in sports and fitness, Linam currently carries a cumulative grade-point average of 3.36, and was one of just three members of this year’s C-USA All-Academic Team who were repeat selections.

Linam, a senior, started 25 of UCF’s last 26 games at middle linebacker, ranking third on the team in 2011 with 66 tackles including a season-high nine vs. East Carolina and UTEP. He also collected 10 tackles for loss, two sacks and a pair of interceptions. Linam received College Football Performance Awards Honorable Mention National Linebacker of the Week honors for his effort against UTEP, which featured 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception.

For his career, Linam registered 165 tackles with 20 tackles for loss and three interceptions in 50 games played.

Tate High Softball Team Honored For Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

December 5, 2011

The Tate High School softball team was recognized as the 2011 Top School Fundraising Team during the recent American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer banquet.

The team raised $3,262 for the walk, beginning with their spring season when they dedicated one of their home games to “striking out” breast cancer.
