Tate Gets Tourney Win; EA Girls Beat Sparta

Here’s a look at baseball and softball action from around the area:
Tate 10 — McAdory (Ala.) 5
After suffering their first loss of the season Tuesday, the Tate Aggies bounced back with a win Wednesday.
The Aggies beat the McAdory (Ala.) Yellow Jackets 10-5 in the Acentria/Aggie Classic. The Aggies are now 11-1 on the season. Tate dropped to Pinson Valley 3-2 in eight innings Tuesday.
Tate will play the Hueytown Golden Gophers at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tate (this is a location change) for fifth place in the tourney.
SOFTBALL
Escambia Academy 14 – Sparta 0
The Lady Cougars of Escambia Academy shut out Sparta on Tuesday, 14-0. Sydney McGhee was 3-4 at bat with a single, double and triple. Megan Duncan was 3-3 with 2 RBIs.
Escambia Academy 2 — Sparta 1
In junior varsity play, Escambia Academy defeated Sparta 2-1. Kennedy McGhee and Autumn Corley had doubles for the JV Lady Cougars, while Victoria Sawyer, Anna Catherine Sasser and Carson Barnett had singles.
NHS JV Beats Freeport (With Photo Gallery)

The junior varsity Northview Chiefs defeated the Freeport Bulldogs 8-2 Tuesday afternoon in Bratt.

Atmore Christian Beats Gateway

Atmore Christian School picked up another win Tuesday afternoon, defeating Gateway Academy of Bonifay 16-6 in five innings.
Atmore Christian will host Escambia Academy’s Cougars on Friday afternoon at 4:30.

Escambia Academy Beats Sparta

Escambia Academy took two from Sparta on Tuesday.
Escambia Academy 14 — Sparta 3
Escambia Academy’s varsity beat Sparta 14-3 on Tuesday. The Cougars scored nine of their runs in the first three innings. Michael Thompson allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five for EA. Jarrett Hadley was 2-3 for the Cougars with 3 RBIs, Braxton Chastang also went 2-3 with 2 RBIs, and Chance Jackson was 1-3 with 2 RBIs.
Escambia Academy 5 — Sparta 4 (JV)
Escambia Academy’s junior varsity got past Sparta 5-4 Tuesday in five. The Cougars’ Nate Smith had 2 RBIs on two hits — a homer in the first and a single in the third. Trey Smith took the win on the mound for the Cougars, striking out six, walking one and allowing two hits.
NWE Baseball Camp Canceled

A Northwest Escambia baseball camp scheduled for this weekend has been canceled.
Players from NWE were to attend the camp with the Northview High School varsity players on the Northview campus. The even will be rescheduled for a later date.
Everyone Wins: Welcome To The Miracle League

Every game ends in a tie. Every player hits; every player scores. There are no strikeouts, no errors. Everybody wins.
Welcome to the Miracle League.
Olivia Bush, 8, of Cantonment is blind, able to see just a little light with her left eye. She suffered frequent seizures until a portion of her brain was removed in February of 2010 at Miami Children’s Hospital. During the surgery, doctors removed a seven centimeter portion of her brain — basically taking out the bad, non-functioning portion and leaving behind the good, healthy tissue. She has been seizure-free since and has become much more independent.
But Saturday morning on the Miracle League field on Nine Mile Road, Olivia (pictured left) was just a regular kid…playing first base and, with the help of a buddy, getting a strong hit toward center field.
“It means a lot to Olivia to be able to participate in a sport,” mom Amber Bush said as she watched Olivia play. “It means a lot to us as parents to see her play.”

“I still tear up at times,” Miracle League volunteer Packy Mitchell said Saturday morning as he watched the kids of the Miracle League.
It’s a baseball league for disabled and special needs persons of all ages. Some of the players are in wheelchairs and walkers. Some handicaps are mental, some are physical. It’s a place for miracles.
In the end, the first game of the year between the Rockies and the Phillies was tied, just as every game has ended in a tie for the past 11 seasons. The stats for each of the 100 plus players will be the same at the end of the season — perfect.
Players and volunteers come from not just Pensacola, but Mobile, Crestview, Brewton and points in between. Everybody is a volunteer that participates with the Miracle League. The are paid only in smiles.
“On my Saturdays this time of the year, I’m here,” Mitchell said. “It’s the best thing for kids that I’ve every been totally involved in.”
“The smiles on their faces just makes it all worth it,” he added.
Each of the two Pensacola Miracle League fields is made up of 180,000 pounds of recycled tires formed into tiles painted to match a regular field. It provides a softer landing spot for a hard fall, while still providing a good bounce for the hollow core ball that is also designed to lesson injury potential.
The Miracle League needs more volunteers to serve as buddies, work the concession booth, pickup trash and many more tasks around their area of the Nine Mile Road ballpark.
The public is always welcome and encouraged to cheer on the players.

T.R. Miller 13 – Northview 2
T.R. Miller took two from the Northview Chiefs during a Saturday doubleheader in Bratt. Miller won the first game 9-2 and the second game 13-2.
Northview will host Freeport Tuesday afternoon, with the JV playing at 4:00 at the varsity taking field at 6:00. On Thursday, the Chiefs will hit the road for Central High School in Santa Rosa County.
Tate 5 — Glenwood (Ala.) 4
The Tate Aggies improved to 9-0 Saturday with a 5-4 win over Gleenwood (Ala.) High School. Next up for the Aggies is The Acentria/Aggie Classic this Monday through Thursday.

Flomaton 12 — J.U. Blacksher 7
The Flomaton Hurricanes took two from J.U. Blacksher of Uriah on Friday in a baseball double header.
Zack Watson threw his second consecutive no-hitter Friday night. It only took the Hurricanes 5 innings to take down their area rivals the J.U. Blacksher Bulldogs 10-0. Jacob Newton had an outstanding night at the plate going 3-3 with HR, 2 doubles, and 4 RBIs. The Hurricanes improve their record to 10-3. Trevor Harris took the lose for the Bulldogs and Zack Watson was the winning pitcher and improves his record to 4-1.

Flomaton beats J.U. Blacksher 12-7 in game two of the double header The Hurricanes had to fight back after going down 4-0 in the 3 inning. The Hurricanes showed heart by bouncing back and beating them 12 to 7. Tyler Harris got the win for the Hurricanes and got his first win of the year. Bryan James took the loss for the Bulldogs. The Hurricanes improved their record to 11-3 and are on a 10 game winning streak. Flomaton’s next game is Friday at Cottage Hill starting at 4 then at 6.

Error Free: Northview Lady Chiefs Beat Freeport

A 100-mile road trip paid off for the Northview Lady Chiefs Friday with two big wins over the Freeport Bulldogs.
Northview 11 — Freeport 0
The Northview Lady Chiefs beat the Freeport Bulldogs 11-0 in girl’s softball action Friday. The Lady Chiefs were error-free in their big district win.
After an 11-day spring break, the NHS Lady Chiefs will be back in action on March 27 across the river at the Jay Royals. The junior varsity will play at 4:00 with varsity to follow at 6:00.
Northview 7 — Freeport 4 (JV)
In junior varsity softball action, the Northview Lady Chiefs beat Freeport 7-4.

HS Baseball: Tate Aggies Just Keep On Winning

The wins just keep on coming for Coach Greg Blackmon and his Tate High School Aggies. The Aggies beat Gulf Shores 4-1 Friday night to improve to 8-0 on the season.
David Moorehead was 2-3 at the plate for the Aggies with an RBI and a run; Maverick Champion was 1-2 with an RBI and a run. On the mound, Cody Palmer allowed one run, walked one and had two strikeouts, while J.T. Granat pitched two, striking out four allowing one hit.
In varsity baseball action, the Tate Aggies will host Glenwood (Ala.) High School at 1 p.m. Saturday.
