West Florida Beats Tate

The West Florida Jaguars beat the Tate Aggies 56-7 Friday night in Cantonment.
The Aggies were unable to cross midfield until the second quarter against a strong West Florida defense, and West Florida held a 42-0 lead at the half thanks to a strong offense. WFHS quarterback Joey Baker had just over 300 yards and touchdown passes of 15, 46 and 26 yards plus a 1-yard keeper.

Flomaton ‘Canes Blow Past Choctaw County 42-13

The Flomaton Hurricanes powered to a 42-13 Class 2A, Region 1 win Friday night over Choctaw County.
Flomaton took the lead 8-0 with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter on a 2-yard run from Ryheem Dixon. But the Choctaw County fought back, taking a 13-8 lead over FHS with a 4-yard TD and a 70-yard interception return.
But the Canes stormed back for the lead with a 15-yard run from Gorad Sanders with just under eight minutes go in the half. That put Flomaton on top for the remainder of the contest.
Tripp Vickery was 5 for 6 with 171 yards. He had a 77-yard TD pass to Levi Carden and a 15-yard pass to Dylan Carpenter. Dixon had three touchdowns on the night and 116 yards on 17 carries. Sander racked up 82 yards for Flomaton on eight carries.
The Flomaton Hurricanes (1-2, 1-1) will be on the road next Friday night at Mobile Christian.
Sneads Pirates Take 19-14 Win From The Jay Royals

The Jay Royals lost to the Sneads Pirates in Jay Friday night, 19-14.
Sneads took the lead with two and quarter minutes to go in the first quarter. The Pirates held on to the their 7-0 advantage until the Royals tied it up 7-7 with three and half minutes in the half with a pass from QB Tate Upton to Ashton Dennington.
The Royals were pumped as the second half began, scoring on play number two of the third quarter with a 64-yarder from Upton to Hunter Dillawhaw, 14-7 Jay. Sneads quickly fought back but missed a kick for Jay to retain the lead 14-13.
Sneads sealed the win on a 75-yarder for a 19-14 win.
The Jay Royals will sit out next week with an open date before hitting the road to South Walton on September 28.

Escambia County’s Justin Gatlin, Team USA Honored At White House

Escambia County Olympian Justin Gatlin and the rest of Team USA were welcomed to the White House Friday to honor their participation and success in this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
At an event on the South Lawn, Mrs. Obama told the athletes that she was impressed not only by the 200-plus medals they brought home, but also by their dedication and hard work leading up to the games.
“I want you to know how inspired we are by all of you — your passion, your dedication, your courage,” First Lady Michelle Obama said the during the event on the South Lawn.
President Barack Obama — who shared that he was able to catch some of the Olympic events thanks to mastering his DVR — told the athletes that they “could not have been better ambassadors and better representatives for the United States and what we stand for”.
During the 2012 Olympics Gatlin won the bronze in the men’s 100m dash and, along with his team, took the silver in the men’s 4×100 meter relay.
“I went out there to challenge a mountain,” Gatlin said after winning the bronze. “I went out there to challenge the odds.”

Jay, Central, Ernest Ward, East Hill Christian and Northview took part in a middle and high school cross country meeting Thursday afternoon at Northview.
In girls varsity, Jay took first, followed by Central and Northview. In varsity boys, Central took first followed by Northview in second. Among middle school girls, Jay took first with Ernest Ward Middle second.

West Florida Downs Tate In Freshman, JV Football

The West Florida Jaguars defeated the Tate Aggies Thursday night in both junior varsity and freshman football action.
The WFHS freshmen downed Tate 33-26, and the West Florida junior varsity defeated Tate 20-14.
Next Thursday night, the JV and freshmen Aggies will take the Gators at Escambia High School. JV will take the field at 5:00, and the freshmen will play at 6:30 p.m.
Ernest Ward Middle Eagles Defeat Elberta, 44-16

The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles beat the Raiders from Elberta, Ala., Thursday night, 44-16.

The Eagles held an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter when Dustin Beathea was in for a 22-yard touchdown from a Luke Ward pass. A good two-pointer and it was 22-0.
On the first play of the second quarter, Contraris Mitchell scored on a 70 yard kickoff return, and Luke Ward was in for a good two point conversion, 28-0.
Ward added another touchdown on a 65-yard run, and the Raiders scored with 2:56 in the half, 36-8.
Desmone Knight returned a kickoff for the Eagles, 44-8 with 2:49 before halftime.
The Ernest Ward Eagles (2-0) will travel to Summerdale, Ala., next Thursday night.

Register Now For 3rd Annual Chief Challenge 5K Run/Walk

The Third Annual Chief Challenge 5K Run/Walk is coming to Northview High School.
The event will be held Saturday, October 6 at 8:30 a.m. at the school campus in Bratt. “The course is not your typical 5K race. It includes a variety of terrains and challenging hills around the campus,” according to event organizers.
Awards will be presented to the top six male and female runners in the elementary, middle and high school categories, and to the top three male and female runners in two adult categories plus master and grand master.

“The event is to promote wellness through running and walking in the area. Now with Bratt Park more and more people are taking advantage of the walking track and getting into shape,” said Natalie Nall, cross country coach at Northview.
About 120 runners and walkers took part in last year’s Chief Challenge.

Volleyball: Baker Tops NHS; Tate Topples Escambia

The Baker Gators defeated the Northview Chiefs in high school volleyball action Tuesday, while the Tate Aggies toppled Escambia High.
Baker defeats Northview
In varsity action, Baker won 25-14, 25-12, 25-21. Shelly Mothershed had four assists as Lilly Townson added three assists. Misty Doran had six kills and two aces for the Chiefs.
In junior varsity play, Baker defeated NHS 25-20, 25-20. For the JV Lady Chiefs, Hope Coggins and Penny Banda had two aces each, and Shelby Nielsen had four aces and two kills.
The varsity Lady Chiefs will take part in the Spanish Fort Varsity Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Both the JV and varsity will be in action at home next Monday against Jay beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Tate defeats Escambia
Tate defeated Escambia Tuesday 25-14, 25-14, 25-10.
Tate’s Brooke White had five kills, two blocks, one ace, and one dig; Shani Conoly recorded 10 kills, four blocks; Heather Thomason had five aces and one dig; Lauren Merts 16 assists, two aces, four digs; Jordan White six kills, one block, one ace, Julie McKinley one kill; Lexi Windham one kill, two blocks, three aces, two digs; two digs; Carissa Caroll one dig; and Jordan Barnette one ace, nine digs.
Tate will host Pensacola High on Thursday.

JV Football: Escambia County Slips Past Northview (With Gallery)

The junior varsity Escambia County Blue Devils slipped past the JV Northview Chiefs Monday evening in Atmore, 8-6.

The Blue Devils took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter, while the JV Chiefs answered in the second. Northview’s Isaiah Bivans was in for the touchdown on a pass from Keondre Lett.
The junior varsity Northview Chiefs will next host Baker at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 20. The Blue Devils will host Faith Academy in Atmore on Monday, September 17 at 6 p.m.
