Century’s Showalter Named American League Manager Of The Year

October 29, 2012

Century’s Buck Showalter of the Baltimore Orioles has been named the Sporting News’ 2012 American League Manager of the Year.

Baltimore, which lost 93 games in 2011, broke its streak of 14 consecutive losing seasons by winning 93 games and the AL Wild Card this past season.

“It’s quite an honor coming from my peers, but I view this as a team award. I really do,” Showalter said in a statement. “The players, coaches and everyone involved made this possible.

“We had some injuries along the way, we had some bumps in the road, but everyone does over 162 games. We never turned it into a woe-is-me situation. We played through it.”

The award was voted upon by AL managers. Showalter received four votes, Oakland’s Bob Melvin had three and White Sox manager Robin Ventura received one.

Homecoming Win: Northview Stings Vernon

October 27, 2012

The Northview Chiefs beat the Vernon Yellow Jackets 40-0 Friday night in Bratt.

“It was a complete win tonight,” Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said. Easily cruising past Vernon, Wheatley took the opportunity to play almost the entire Chiefs team, including all  20 seniors that had the chance to become involved in the homecoming win.

LaMikal Kyles opened the scoring for the Northview Chiefs with a 36-yard touchdown run. Kevin Vaughan’s kick was no good, bouncing off the uprights. The Chiefs were up 6-0 with 8:03 to go in the first quarter of their homecoming game.

Northview’s Neiko Robinson added another TD with 5:23 in the first. Vaughan nailed his second point after kick, 13-0. But the Chiefs were not done with the scoreboard for the first quarter. With 2:03 on the clock,  LaDarius Thomas was into the end zone. A good kick, the Chiefs were up 20-0.

In the second quarter, Vaughan scored with a 24-yard touchdown run, 27-0; and Neino Robinson added another touchdown, 33-0.

And in the third, Neiko Robinson sealed the deal with another touchdown, 40-0.

“Our defense continues to play really well,” Wheatley said. “When you can slow people down and keep them out of the end zone, with the capabilities we’ve got on offense, we are going to be in good shape most of the time.”

Next week, the Chiefs will hit Highway 4 and travel to Baker in a football matchup that will determine the District 1-1A champion and home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

“Baker is tough place to play,” Wheatley said. “We are really going to have a great week of practice and a great week of preparation.  I am going to challenge them to really prepare themselves and get ready for a big district football game.
