Northview Honors Winning Football Team, Cheerleaders, Dance Team

The state champion Northview Chiefs honored their football players, cheerleaders and dance team members during their annual banquet.
“Collectively, you are the best group of football players that has come through Northview High School,” Principal Gayle Weaver told the team, the first ever to earn a state championship for the Chiefs.

“This is a great time to be a Northview Chief,” Head Coach Sid Wheatley said, adding that community support is growing stronger and stronger with each passing year.
“To see 2,000 plus fans from the community in the stands at the Citrus Bowl was an awesome thing and means a lot to the kids,” he said. “It’s great to see parents the community support the kids like they do.”
This year’s graduating Northview Chiefs football players are the first to have spent four years under Wheatley as head coach.
“Over the last four years I have watched these guys turn into great football players who are disciplined, have a tremendous work ethic and great character. Northview is blessed with good athletes,” he said.

Here’s a look at baseball and softball action from around the area Tuesday:
SOFTBALL
The Northview Lady Chiefs continued their perfect season Tuesday with a 5-1 varsity win over the Flomaton Hurricanes. Northview’s Misty Doran pitched her second no hitter of the season while striking out 17. The JV Chiefs also beat Flomaton 16-1 on a game that ended in the fourth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Tate Lady Aggies swept Pine Forrest Lady Eagles with a 14-4 win (run rule) at Pine Forrest. The Lady Aggies are still perfect in District 6A. Tate will travel to Tallahassee this weekend to play in the Chiles High School Tournament. They will return to district play next week against Navarre, Escambia and Pensacola High.

Two Time Super Bowl Champ Inspires Chiefs At Annual Football Banquet

Two-time Super Bowl champion Anthony Pleasant spoke words of inspiration to the state champion Northview Chiefs Monday night during their annual football banquet.
Champions are special, Pleasant told the young men, and champions should work to fulfill the role. “You guys are champs,” he told the Chiefs, “You have won the state championship, conduct yourselves as champions.”
Acting like a champion means respecting authority, the Century native said, “because you can’t get there if you do not respect authority.”
Pleasant said relationships are key in life, and bridges should never be burned. A team, the Super Bowl champ said, is a group of unselfish players that do not look out only for their own interests, but for those of their teammates.”
Pleasant encouraged the Chiefs players to pursue their dreams, whether or not those dreams include football.
“Not everyone will be a professional ball player, but whatever your passion – follow it, pursue your passion.”
Pleasant is a former pro football player selected in the third round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. During his 14 year NFL career, Pleasant played for the Browns, the Baltimore Ravens, the Atlanta Falcons, the New York Jets, the San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots. He played a total of 202 NFL games and racked up 58 sacks and two interceptions. The 1986 Century High School graduate earned two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots.

Northview’s Kyles, Woods, Sign Football Scholarships

Two members of the Northview High School state champion football team inked scholarship Monday afternoon to play for Northeast Mississippi Community College.
Running back LaMikal Kyles and linebacker Roderick Woods, Jr. are headed to Booneville, MS, in the fall. The second cousins were four-year starters for the Northview Chiefs, playing under Sid Wheatley since his first season as head coach
Kyles had about two dozen touchdowns and over 1,300 rushing yards his senior season, while Woods accumulated almost 90 tackles in his seven-game season.

Chiefs Set Two School Records In Baker Track Meet

Two school records were broken as the Northview High School track and field team took part in the first competition of the season at the Baker High School Track and Field Meet.
Azeen Grissett broke a 5-year old school record as he raced to a 57.99 second place finish in the 400 meters. Cameron Newsome leaped to a height of 5- feet 8- inches and broke a 3-year school record in the high jump.
Both the 4×800 meter relay team (Joshua Borelli, Ramsey Gafford, James Ates, Zachary Calloway), and the 4×100 meter relay team (Ty’Dre Bradley, Hunter Sherouse, Cameron Newsome, and Holden Moore) finished in third place. The throwers were led by freshman Austin Whitehead which hurled the shot put 33-feet, 11 inches.
Standout performances for the Chiefs were seen in the 100 meter race, where junior Holden Moore ran 11.78 seconds, Azeen Grissett in 12.25 seconds, Keondrae Lett in 12.46 and Ty’Dre Bradley in 13.68 seconds.
“I’m extremely proud to see two school records broken at the first track meet of the season,” said Aaron Thompson, head boys track coach. “I’m looking forward to the district championships next month, and having athletes qualify for the regional championships and compete in Jacksonville.”
On the girls side, Northview had a strong showing in the 100 meters by Hannah Fiellin, and Johna Carter. In the 100 meter hurdles, Tierra Floyd posted the fastest time for the Northview Chiefs as teammate Ashley Joiner finished right behind her. The Lady Chiefs captured a top 3 finish in the 4×800 meter relay, and also finished strong in the 4×100 meter relay which was anchored by Tierra Floyd.
The Northview Chiefs will compete next their next track meet of the season this afternoon at Jay High School.

Subway All-Star Basketball Game Is Friday

The Pensacola Sports Association has announce the rosters for the Subway High School All-Star Basketball Game Friday night, March 8 at Pensacola State College.
The game starts at 6 p.m. for the girls, 8 p.m. for the boys and will include seniors from Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Counties.
The coaching staff for the Boys West Team, which includes all Escambia County high schools, will be led by the head coach from Tate High School, Clyde Abney. Chris Godwin, the head coach for Pine Forest High School, will coach the Girls West Team. Coaches from the other county high schools will assist Abney and Godwin with their game plans. The East Girls from Okaloosa and Santa Rosa Counties, will be coached by Kenneth Hughes from Pace High School. The boys coach for the East team will be Ken Meisner from Crestview High School. Both coaches will be assisted by the other head coaches from the two-county area high schools.
Tickets to the game are $8 and $6 with a canned good donation. The PSA is teaming with Manna Food Bank for a canned good drive and encouraging everyone to help families by bringing a canned good item. D

The Northview Chiefs baseball team held a training camp Saturday. From pitching to catching, the camp focused on the basics of improving play for machine pitch through senior league players.
Under the supervision and direction of Northview’s Head Coach Marty Lister, players were taught the necessary skills to become a better player. All aspects of the games were covered such as, base running, stealing bases, pick-off moves for both pitchers and catchers, batting and throwing.
All camp participants received one-on-one instruction from the Northview players.

No-Hitter For Jay Baseball; Mercy Rule Softball Win For Northview, Loss For Jay Royals (With Gallery)

Friday night was good to the Northview Lady Chiefs as their winning streak continued, and to the Jay Royals with a no-hitter mercy win over Chipley.
Northview 10, Freeport 0
Misty Doran pitched a no hitter as the Northview Lady Chiefs beat Freeport Friday night in Bratt 10-0 in a game that ended in the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. With the win, the Lady Chiefs improved their perfect season record to 5-0. The Lady Chiefs will be in action again on Tuesday as they host Flomaton. First pitch for the JV will be at 4:00, and the varsity plays at 6:00.

Jay 13, Chipley 0
The Jay Royals beat Chipley 13-0 Friday night in a mercy rule win. Jay pitcher Dalton Edwards tossed a no-hitter for the Royals on the road at Chipley. The Royals will be in action gainst Monday at Century. The JV plays at 4:30 and the varsity takes the mound at 6 p.m.
Baker 10, Jay 0
In softball action, the Baker Gators defeated the Jay Royals 10-0 Friday night in Jay. The Lady Royals will host Holmes County next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Northview To Hold Baseball Camp Today

The Northview Chiefs will hold a Baseball Camp today.
The camp is open to all machine pitch through senior league players wanting to sharpen their baseball skills. Players can get valuable, specialized training from the Northview
Chief’s Varsity Baseball Team.
Under the supervision and direction of Northview’s Head Coach Marty Lister, players will be taught the necessary skills to become a better player. All aspects of the games will be covered such as, base running, stealing bases, pick-off moves for both pitchers and catchers, batting and throwing.
All camp participants will get one-on-one instruction from the Northview players.
The camp, sponsored by the Northview Diamond Club, will be held Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Registration time is 8:30; registration is $20 per player.

Northview Varsity Beats Freeport; JV Falls

The Northview Chiefs hosted Freeport Thursday.

In junior varsity action, the Northview Chiefs fell to Freeport Thursday, 3-1. Brett Weeks pitched a complete game for NHS.The JV Chiefs will be in action Tuesday, March 5 at 4:00 at Escambia Academy in Canoe, Ala.
Northview 9, Freeport 1
The Northview Chiefs beat Freeport 9-1 in varsity action Thursday night in Bratt. Daulton Tullis pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out eight Freeport batters. Winston Riley went 2 for 3 with a walk and 4 RBI’s. The Chiefs will make the short road trip to Canoe, Ala., to take on Escambia Academy next Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
