Blue Wahoos Game Rained Out

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos’ contest with the Jacksonville Suns scheduled for Friday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader when the Suns return to Pensacola for a five games series May 28-June 1

Fans with tickets Friday night’s game can use their ticket for any 2013 regular season home game excluding July 4 and July 6, subject to availability. Fans must exchange their ticket at least 24 hours in advance of a desired game at the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Ticket Office for a ticket of equal or lesser value. Exchanges must be made in person and cannot be processed via telephone, email or fax.

The Wahoos will now begin a 10-game road trip Saturday against the Jackson Generals. First pitch from the ballpark  in Jackson is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

Lady Royals Win District Tournament

The Jay Lady Royals beat the Chipley Tigers 8-6 Thursday night to claim the Class 1A Rural District 2 Softball District championship.

The Royals were down 1-0 in the second inning when they turned things around to a 4-1 lead.  The Royals’ Camille Driver scored on an error by the Lady Tigers, and a Harley Tagert Single brought Destiny Herring home. A line drive from Michaela Stewart sent Chassity McCranie across the plate. Tagert scored on a double from Ashlyn Geck to make it 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, Driver scored on a Chipley pitcher error for a 5-1 advantage. Chipley answered, evening it up at 5-5.

Olivia Wright and Stewart scored in the bottom of the fourth, and Taylor Moore added run on a line drive single from Bayleigh Upton.

The top two teams in the district head to  regionals, so both Jay and Chipley advance. The Jay Lady Royals will host Central High on April 30.

Panthers Over Tate In 12 Inning Battle

The Tate Lady Aggies ended their season last night after battling with the Milton Panthers for 12 innings.

The Aggies were ahead 4-0 when the Panthers mounted another great come back to tie the game up and send it to extra innings. The Lady Panthers tore open the game in the 12th scoring four more runs while the Lady Aggies could not answer.

Milton will face Pace tonight for the District Championship at Milton High School.

Eighth Inning Rally Lifts Blue Wahoos Past Suns

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos broke a 2-2 tie in the last of the eighth inning with eight runs to win going away 10-2 over the Jacksonville Suns in front of 4,591 fans on Thursday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Entering the eighth tied at two, Pensacola erupted for eight runs on seven hits against Arquimedes Caminero and Scott McGough. Donald Lutz led off the inning with a triple and scored on a double by Travis Mattair to give the Wahoos a 3-2 lead. After two walks to load the bases, Steve Selsky brought home a run with a single, Tucker Barnhart drew a bases loaded walk to score another one and Devin Lohman blasted a two-run double. The next two batters were retired before Lutz batted for a second time and launched a ground rule double to make it 9-2. Mattair followed with his second hit of the inning, a single that the left fielder misplayed, allowing Lutz to score the eighth run of the inning. The final carnage was eight runs on seven hits, three walks and an error.

The eight-run frame set a new franchise record for runs scored in a half inning and the 10 overall runs tied a franchise-high set twice last season.

Prior to the eighth inning eruption it was a game marked by highlight reel defensive plays and timely hitting. Barnhart drove home Bryson Smith in the second inning on a sacrifice fly and again in the fourth inning on a single to right. Barnhart was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI. Lutz and Smith contributed three hits apiece as the Wahoos tallied a season-high 13 base knocks.

Pensacola’s defense kept the Suns off the board in multiple frames as Smith made a sliding catch with a runner on third and two outs to save a run in the second. With a runner on third and one out in the fifth, Taylor Krick lifted a fly to center that Ryan LaMarre hauled in. LaMarre then uncorked a strike to home plate to Barnhart who caught the ball and survived a collision with the runner Jake Smolinski to finish off an 8-2 double play.

Despite the defensive gems, the Suns tied the game in the seventh on a two-out double from Krick that plated two with one scoring when the ball was mishandled in right field.

Chad Rogers received a no-decision despite yielding just one run on two hits over 6.2 frames. Drew Hayes (1-0) picked up the win despite giving up an unearned run in 1.1 innings.

Caminero (1-1) gave up seven runs (all earned) on four hits and three walks in just a third of an inning.

The blowout sets up an intriguing rubber game on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Ryan Dennick (1-0, 2.45) will go for the Blue Wahoos against the Suns’ Sam Dyson (0-1, 0.96).

1-2A Track And Field Results, Northview, WFHS, Catholic

Northview, West Florida and Catholic high schools competed in the 2A District 1 Track and Field Championships recently at Washington High School.

The top four places in each event qualified them for the Regional Championships this week at Bolles High School in Jacksonville.

“I’m extremely proud of the Boys and Girls Track and Field teams this year. We knew it was going to be tough heading into the district championships to grab one of the top four spots, and qualify for the regional championships, but the athletes kept their composure and were able to put up some of their best performances of the season at the biggest meet of the year,” Northview Coach Aaron Thompson said.

Suns Blow Past Wahoos

The Jacksonville Suns scored runs in five of their first six at-bats and cruised to a 10-3 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in front of 4,159 fans on Wednesday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Despite the lopsided score, the night was a win for everyone at the ballpark, including Tristan Laurent who participated in the Sacred Heart Home Run for Life. Laurent, a member of the West Florida High School baseball team, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. As part of the Home Run for Life, every player from both teams greeted Laurent during his lap on the field and he also received a bat signed by the entire Blue Wahoos team.

In the game, the Suns got a leadoff homer from Danny Black in the first and that was just a sign of things to come. Kyle Jensen blasted a two-run home run in the third to open up a three-run lead. It was part of a big night from Jensen, who finished a triple shy of the cycle and went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI.

In the fourth inning, Jacksonville continued to hit around Pensacola starter Tim Crabbe, connecting on five consecutive two-out hits to score three runs. Derek Dietrich tripled home two prior to a Jensen RBI single. Mark Canha smacked a solo shot in the fifth for Jacksonville’s third homer of the contest, giving the Suns a 7-3 lead.

Crabbe (1-1) gave up seven runs on 14 hits in his 4.2 frames while allowing the three solo dingers. Prior to tonight’s start, Crabbe was third in the league in opponents batting average and had given up just four knocks in his prior two outings.

The Suns offense battered newcomer Shaun Ellis in his 1.1 innings, posting three more tallies in the sixth with RBI’s coming from Jensen, Cox, and Canha. Jacksonville ended up with 18 hits, which tied a Blue Wahoos record for most hits allowed in a single contest. J.T. Realmuto had four of the 18 hits while scoring three times.

Pensacola got all three of its runs in the bottom of the third against Jacksonville starter Adam Conley. With the bases loaded and one out, Donald Lutz drew a walk to make the score 3-1. Steve Selsky followed with a two-run single up the middle to briefly tie the game at three.

Conley only went four innings and thus did not qualify for the win. Edgar Olmos (2-0) picked up the win in relief by tossing two one-hit innings. The Jacksonville bullpen extended its scoreless innings streak to 22 innings dating back to last Saturday.

The Wahoos and Suns continue their five-game set on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Chad Rogers (1-0, 2.45) will get the start for the Blue Wahoos against Michael Ojala (1-0, 6.00).

Northview Falls In District Tourney; Jay Advances To Finals

The Northview Lady Chiefs fell in the District 1 Class 1A softball tournament Tuesday, while the Jay Lady Royals advanced to the finals Thursday night.

Northview lost 7-1 to Chipley, a team the No. 1 seed Lady Chiefs had defeated twice during the regular season.

The Jay Lady Royals beat the Lady Gators of Baker 6-1. Syndney Lowery allowed jut three hits in seven innings on the mound.  Taylor Moore went 4-4, Ashlynn Geck went 3-3, Olivia Wright was 2-3, and Camille Driver was 1-4 for Jay.

The Lady Royals will play the  Baker Gators at 6 p.m. Thursday for the District 1 Class 1A championship.

Pensacola Wahoos Snap Skid With 6-3 Win Over Suns

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos offense awakened from its nearly weeklong slumber by pounding their way past the Jackonsville Suns 6-3 on Tuesday night in front of 3,358 fans at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

Pensacola rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to score six runs in their first three at-bats. In the last of the first inning, Donald Lutz launched a laser over the right field wall for a two-run homer, scoring Brodie Greene who had singled earlier in the frame. The blast was Lutz’s fourth of the season, the most in the Southern League in the young 2013 campaign, and it knotted the game at two apiece.

The Wahoos added to their lead with a four-run third inning against Jacksonville starter James Leverton. With one out, Ryan LaMarre and Greene singled before scampering home on a two-run opposite-field double from Bryson Smith to give Pensacola a 4-2 lead. Lutz was then hit by a pitch and after a lineout and a pitching change, Devin Lohman dropped a double down the left field line to score Smith and Lutz to give the Wahoos a four-run advantage.

That was more than enough for Pensacola starter Josh Smith (1-2) who had his best start of the season by giving up two runs on six hits over five frames. Smith’s lone mistake was yielding a two-out, two-run single in the first to Mark Canha to give the Suns a brief 2-0 lead. Smith was also able to wiggle out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth by forcing Chris Gutierrez to pop up in foul territory to the catcher.

Jacksonville scored a run in the ninth on a single from Daniel Pertusati and brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but Lee Hyde struck out Derek Dietrich and Curtis Partch came on to earn his third save of the year by punching out Chris Gutierrez.

Leverton (0-1) picked up the loss in his first start of the season after his first three appearances of the year came out of the bullpen. The southpaw went just 2.2 innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits. Jordan Conley, Scott McGough and Rett Varner kept Pensacola at bay the rest of the contest, limiting the Wahoos to just three hits over the final 5.1 frames.

The series continues on Wednesday night as Tim Crabbe looks for his second win of the season for Pensacola against Jacksonville southpaw Adam Conley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Jacksonville Gets Extra Inning Win Over Blue Wahoos

Kyle Jensen launched a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning, accounting for the only run in the game as the Jacksonville Suns extending their winning streak to five games with a 1-0 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Monday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium in front of 4,018 fans.

Neither team mounted much of a rally through the first 10 innings of the contest, as both offenses continued their respective early-season struggles. Pensacola had only two runners reach third base the entire game with the best chance coming in the fourth. The Wahoos had runners on second and third with two outs for hot-hitting Tucker Barnhart, but starter Brian Flynn got Barnhart to ground out to end the threat.

Pensacola also had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the third inning as David Vidal was caught trying to score from second on an infield single from Ryan LaMarre.

Flynn, the Southern League’s strikeout leader entering the game, struck out just two over six innings but yielded only three base knocks. Edgar Olmos (1-0) earned the win for the Suns by tossing two innings of relief with two strikeouts. Michael Brady picked up his fourth save of the year with a perfect bottom of the 11th.

Jacksonville had a base runner in every inning except the eighth and 10th before finally scratching across a run on Jensen’s first round-tripper of the year. Chris Manno (0-1) took the loss for Pensacola as he gave up the run on three hits while striking out three in the 11th.

Blue Wahoos starter Daniel Renken went 5.2 innings in his second Double-A start, allowing five hits while striking out two and walking three. Renken continued a strong stretch of starting pitching for the Wahoos. Pensacola starters have given up just two runs in their last 27.2 innings pitched, an ERA of 0.65 over the last five games. However, the Wahoos are a combined 1-4 in their last five.

A big highlight of the evening was the presentation from Ballparks.com’s Joe Mock, awarding the Blue Wahoos their plaques for earning “Ballpark of the Year” last season from the website.

The five-game series continues on Tuesday night with Josh Smith taking the ball for the Wahoos against the Suns’ James Leverton. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. It’s Team Tuesday and select players will sign autographs on the concourse before the game.

Pensacola Ice Flyers Win President’s Cup

The Pensacola Ice Flyers won their first ever President’s Cup Sunday night, defeating the Huntsville Havoc 2-0 for the Southern Professional Hockey League championship. Pat Knowlton scored for the Ice Flyers and made it 1-0 early the game. And Bradley Cooper sealed the win, making it 2-0 Ice Flyers with just over seven minutes left in the second in front of 4,600 fans.
