Wahoos Open Second Half With Second Half Win 4-2 In Montgomery

Tim Crabbe dominated Montgomery Biscuits hitters over six innings helping the Blue Wahoos earn a 4-2 win to open the second half of the 2013 season Wednesday night from Riverwalk Stadium. Yorman Rodriguez, fresh up from Advanced-A Bakersfield, sparked the offense finishing a home run shy of the cycle with his 3-for-4 game in his Double-A debut.
After getting the leadoff man on for the third straight inning, Pensacola finally capitalized in the third. Luis Durango opened the inning with his second straight leadoff single. A batter later, Rodriguez tripled him home giving Pensacola an early 1-0 lead. Travis Mattair would plate Rodriguez from third later in the inning with an RBI groundout.
The Biscuits countered with a run in the bottom of the third, but it was the only run they would score off Crabbe. Pensacola opened up a three-run advantage with another pair of runs in the fifth. Again it was the top of the order getting it done for Wahoos. With one out, Durango drew a walk which started the rally. He scored when a throw from right field hit him in the back while he was sliding into third on a Rodriguez single. The ball got away allowing the speedy outfielder to scramble to his feet and head home. Marquez Smith then doubled into the left-center field alley plating Rodriguez from second making it a 4-1 Blue Wahoos lead.
The Biscuits would get their final run in seventh off Blue Wahoos reliever Drew Hayes. Riccio Torrez singled home Kyeong Kang from second, but Torrez was thrown out by Durango trying to stretch the one-out hit into a double. Hayes went on to retire the next four batters he faced to close out his two innings of work. Loek Van Mil (S, 6) shut down the Biscuits in the ninth, retiring them 1-2-3 for his sixth save of the season.
Rodriguez nearly launched his first home run as a Wahoo in the seventh. Initially ruled a solo homer, it was later changed to a ground-rule double when the umpires gathered and ruled the ball was wedged between a railing on top of the wall and pads.
Crabbe (W, 3-6) earned his first win for Pensacola since 5/5, also against Montgomery in Pensacola. He matched his season-high with seven strikeouts over six innings. He walked just two and allowed just two hits. Pensacola scored all four of their runs against Biscuits starter Jake Thompson (L, 6-7), though only three were earned. He took the loss after striking out seven over seven innings.
Pensacola looks to build on its win to open the second half on Thursday night. LHP Ryan Dennick (3-7, 3.13) is slated to start for the Wahoos against Biscuits RHP Michael Colla (1-0, 5.56). First pitch from Riverwalk Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

NEP Blue Wins Gospel Projects Tee Ball World Series (With Complete Scores)

NEP Blue won the Gospel Projects 2013 Tee Ball World Series Tuesday night in Milton. NEP Blue downed Pace in a close one, 30-28 for the championship.
Pace beat NEP Gold 23-14 for the Loser’s Bracket championship, and back on Saturday Molino beat Milton 33-21 for the consolation championship.

FWC Delays Vote On Importing Out Of State Deer

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has deferred action until September on a rule prohibiting the importation of live captive deer into Florida from out of state sources.
Meeting in Lakeland, Commissioners said they wanted more time to hear from staff and stakeholders about options designed to reduce the chances of chronic wasting disease (CWD) being introduced into the state.
CWD is not known to affect people but is a contagious neurological disease affecting deer, elk and moose. It is similar to mad cow disease, always fatal, and there is no known cure or vaccine. So far, the disease has been discovered in 22 states, two Canadian provinces and in South Korea.
Since the beginning of May, the FWC has received much public comment and answered many questions and concerns through its website from deer enthusiasts and those who have deer farms and hunting preserves. The Commission used this public input when considering this proposal, which was deferred until fall.

Wahoos Shutout BayBears 4-0

Shaun Ellis shut down a red-hot Mobile BayBears lineup and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning in a 4-0 shutout on Sunday evening at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Wahoos and prevented Mobile from winning the first-half South Division title.
Making his fourth professional start, Ellis (2-1) dominated in 6.1 shutout frames. The Wahoos hurler never allowed a runner past second base as the BayBears mustered just three singles and a walk against Ellis. It was the longest appearance of the season for the right-hander, as he struck out two to pick up his first win as a starter this year.
Pensacola would get all the offense it needed in the fifth inning against Mobile’s Archie Bradley (5-2). Bradley entered the fifth with a no-hitter, but three straight Wahoos reached on singles finished off by a Travis Mattair RBI base knock to give Pensacola a 1-0 lead. The hit extended Mattair’s on-base streak to 19 games, the longest active streak in the league.
After a flyout, Brodie Greene reached on a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to score Tucker Barnhart and double Pensacola’s lead. A passed ball moved runners to second and third before a fielder’s choice plated two more runs for the Wahoos. Second baseman Mike Freeman attempted to throw out Mattair at the plate, but the catcher Raywilly Gomez mishandled his throw, allowing both runs to score.
That ended up being the only inning Pensacola would record a hit, but it was plenty as Drew Hayes and Trevor Bell combined to record the final eight outs of the contest to close the door on the Wahoos’ sixth shutout of the season.
Bradley took just his second loss of the season in 14 starts. He went seven innings and struck out seven while allowing four runs, two of which were earned.
The series and first half wrap up on Monday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium at 7 p.m. Josh Smith (5-5, 3.45) takes the ball for Pensacola against Mobile’s David Holmberg (3-3, 2.45).

MLB Debut: Molino’s Gindl Thrilled To Get The Callup To The Brewers

Outfielder Caleb Gindl of Molino arrived from Triple-A Nashville on Saturday and became the sixth Milwaukee Brewer to make his Major League debut in a season yet to hit its halfway point.
Previous MLB debuts included Khris Davis (April 1), Josh Prince (April 6), Hiram Burgos (April 20), Donovan Hand (May 26) and Scooter Gennett (June 3).
“It’s the best feeling of my life,” Gindl said before the game.
The Brewers promoted Gindl after placing left fielder Ryan Braun on the 15-day disabled list. At 24, Gindl became the youngest of the Brewers’ six players to debut when he struck out against the Reds’ Homer Bailey in the seventh inning.
He is used to that label. Gindl was a Brewers’ fifth-round Draft pick in 2007 out of Pace High School in Florida, and he was 22 when he debuted in Triple-A in 2011. He had been waiting there patiently for a promotion.
“The last two weeks, he has really swung the bat well,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “He hangs in there, gives you a nice at-bat. Especially right now, because he’s got a lot of at-bats under his belt [from Triple-A], I think he’ll be a good pinch-hitter for us for a while. Now, how long that lasts, that he’s good without me starting him, I don’t know. That’s always hard to predict. But he does all the things well that you want from a bench player.”
Gindl was batting .274 at Nashville with eight home runs and a team-best 38 RBIs. He hit .364 over his last 10 games and got the call over Davis, who was hitting .125 over his last 10 contests.
“We try to go by whoever is doing the job, and [Gindl] is swinging the bat the best down there, and we know he plays pretty good defense,” Roenicke said.
The Brewers won a shutout for the first time this year on Saturday, 6-0 over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Molino All-Stars took the consolation championship Saturday in the 2013 Gospel Projects Tee Ball World Series. On Saturday, Molino defeated Cantonment 32-13, then took the championship 33-21 over Milton. Mobile Takes Third Straight Over Pensacola’s Blue Wahoos 6-2

The Mobile BayBears pushed themselves closer to a first half Southern Division crown with a 6-2 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Saturday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Coupled with a Mississippi loss, the BayBears need just one win in the next two days to clinch the crown.
The game took a back seat though in the fourth inning. With one out and the bases loaded Blue Wahoos right fielder Bryson Smith crashed into the wall while making the catch on Justin Greene’s fly ball. Smith caught his cleat in the fence and landed awkwardly while completing the catch. After a lengthy delay, Smith exited the game on a cart with an air cast on his left leg, protecting an apparent leg injury. No update on his condition was given at the time of this release.
The fourth inning was the critical frame in the game as well. Trailing 2-0, Mobile sent nine men to the plate and posted four runs with RBI’s coming from Nick Ahmed, Ender Inciarte, Greene, and Mike Freeman. The BayBears were able to take advantage of Wahoos’ starter Daniel Renken’s lack of control. Renken allowed the first four to reach in the fourth before being lifted for Wilkin De La Rosa. Renken dropped to 1-5 on the year while allowing four runs on just two hits but six walks in 3-plus frames.
Pensacola jumped out to an early advantage thanks in part to Smith. In the first inning, Smith drew a two-out walk and scored on an RBI double from Travis Mattair. In the third, Smith drove home Ryan LaMarre on a sac fly to give the Wahoos a 2-0 lead.
Mobile starter Andrew Chafin settled in after that, working out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning and then retiring 10 straight to finish his outing. Chafin (3-4) went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
The BayBears added to their lead in the eighth inning with a two-out rally against Chris Manno. Nick Evans smacked a double to score Freeman, who reached base all five times he batted to make it 5-2 before Evans scored on an RBI single from Keon Broxton to provide the final run.
The two teams continue their series on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Shaun Ellis (1-1, 4.21) gets the call for the Wahoos against the BayBears’ Archie Bradley (5-1, 1.34).
