Mobile Takes Third Straight Over Pensacola’s Blue Wahoos 6-2
June 16, 2013
The Mobile BayBears pushed themselves closer to a first half Southern Division crown with a 6-2 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Saturday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Coupled with a Mississippi loss, the BayBears need just one win in the next two days to clinch the crown.
The game took a back seat though in the fourth inning. With one out and the bases loaded Blue Wahoos right fielder Bryson Smith crashed into the wall while making the catch on Justin Greene’s fly ball. Smith caught his cleat in the fence and landed awkwardly while completing the catch. After a lengthy delay, Smith exited the game on a cart with an air cast on his left leg, protecting an apparent leg injury. No update on his condition was given at the time of this release.
The fourth inning was the critical frame in the game as well. Trailing 2-0, Mobile sent nine men to the plate and posted four runs with RBI’s coming from Nick Ahmed, Ender Inciarte, Greene, and Mike Freeman. The BayBears were able to take advantage of Wahoos’ starter Daniel Renken’s lack of control. Renken allowed the first four to reach in the fourth before being lifted for Wilkin De La Rosa. Renken dropped to 1-5 on the year while allowing four runs on just two hits but six walks in 3-plus frames.
Pensacola jumped out to an early advantage thanks in part to Smith. In the first inning, Smith drew a two-out walk and scored on an RBI double from Travis Mattair. In the third, Smith drove home Ryan LaMarre on a sac fly to give the Wahoos a 2-0 lead.
Mobile starter Andrew Chafin settled in after that, working out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning and then retiring 10 straight to finish his outing. Chafin (3-4) went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
The BayBears added to their lead in the eighth inning with a two-out rally against Chris Manno. Nick Evans smacked a double to score Freeman, who reached base all five times he batted to make it 5-2 before Evans scored on an RBI single from Keon Broxton to provide the final run.
The two teams continue their series on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. from Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Shaun Ellis (1-1, 4.21) gets the call for the Wahoos against the BayBears’ Archie Bradley (5-1, 1.34).

BayBears Beat The Wahoos
June 15, 2013
The Mobile BayBears scored single tallies in three separate innings, which was enough on Friday night as the BayBears knocked off the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 3-1 in front of a capacity crowd of 5,038 at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium, the 13th sellout of the season.
A night after pounding two homers, Nick Evans got the scoring started again with a fourth-inning solo shot off Wahoos’ starter Ryan Dennick. The BayBears added another run in the fifth inning thanks to a two-out double from Ender Inciarte, scoring the pitcher Bo Schultz who reached on a two-out infield single.
That was all Dennick (3-7) would allow in another solid start that ended in a loss. The southpaw tossed seven innings, allowing the two runs on six hits while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts. Despite the setback, Dennick lowered his ERA to 3.13.
Mobile added an insurance run in the eighth inning off reliever Brian Pearl. Justin Greene led off the inning with a triple and came home to score on a single from Raywilly Gomez.
Pensacola’s lone tally came in the sixth inning. Tucker Barnhart extended his hitting streak to a team-high nine games with a one-out double and he was promptly brought home on a single from Devin Lohman.
The Wahoos had numerous opportunities to take early leads off starter Bo Schultz, with runners on second and third and one out in the second and the bases loaded with one out in the third, but Schultz maneuvered through both jams without any damage. Pensacola ended up stranding a total of eight runners on the night.
Former Blue Wahoo Mark Serrano (1-0) picked up the win in his debut with the Diamondbacks organization, pitching a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Schultz who went just four innings. The win kept Mobile a half-game above second-place Mississippi who also won on Friday night.
The two teams continue their five-game set with a 6:30 p.m. contest on Saturday evening. Shaun Ellis (1-1, 4.21) will start for Pensacola against Mobile’s Andrew Chafin (2-4, 2.89).

Mobile Opens Series With 5-2 Win Over Pensacola
June 14, 2013
Nick Evans launched two home runs, including a tie-breaking shot in the ninth inning to lift the Mobile BayBears to a series-opening win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, 5-2, on Thursday night at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 5,038, the 12th sellout of the season.
The BayBears, riding a string of late-inning victories, continued their come-from-behind prowess on Thursday. Entering the eighth trailing 2-1, Mobile posted the final four runs of the contest for the victory. In the eighth, Keon Broxton singled and Mike Freeman double to put runners at second and third with nobody out before Nick Ahmed drove home Broxton with a sac fly to tie the game. Wilkin De La Rosa come on to get the final two outs of the inning while stranding the go-ahead run at third.
In the ninth, the BayBears again put the first two runners on via a single and an error. Ahmed stepped to the dish having already smoked a solo homer in the fourth inning, and jolted his second homer of the game, a three-run shot on a 3-0 pitch to give Mobile its three-run lead.
Kevin Munson came on in the ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season by retiring the Wahoos in the ninth. With the win, Mobile held its half-game lead over Mississippi who also won on Thursday night.
The late rally spoiled what was a solid start from Tim Crabbe. The right-hander tossed a season-high 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out four. Crabbe had retired 20 of the last 21 and 10 straight entering the eighth inning before being pulled after the Freeman double.
Pensacola tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, Ray Chang blasted a solo shot, his second home run since returning from Triple-A. An inning later, Tucker Barnhart extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-out single to score Ryan LaMarre.
The two teams continue the five-game series on Friday night with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. Ryan Dennick (3-6, 3.18) gets the start for Pensacola against Mobile’s Bo Schultz (1-0, 0.00).
