Cincinnati Reds To Play MLB Game In Pensacola
September 11, 2013
Pensacola will be dipping its toe into the frenzied waters of professional baseball a little earlier next year as the Pensacola Blue Wahoos host their parent Major League team, the
Reds, in an exhibition game scheduled for March 27, 2014. The announcement will be made Wednesday at 2pm from a ceremony at home plate in Pensacola’s Bayfront Stadium.
The Blue Wahoos will join executives from the Reds in announcing the contest which will kick off the 2014 season. Wahoos fans will see familiar names and faces on the Reds roster as Blue Wahoos past compete against Blue Wahoos present.
The contest, the first time since 1958 that a Major League team has played in Pensacola, is the result of months of behind-the-scenes work by Blue Wahoos and Reds executives to bring the big league team to the Bayfront.
Quint Studer, owner of the Blue Wahoos, said the long-standing history of baseball in Pensacola was part of the inspiration to bring Cincinnati to the Sunshine State.
“I have loved hearing from people who remember a half-century ago when they had the chance to see Major League players play in Pensacola. Having a Double-A affiliate team in Pensacola, the highest level of professional baseball in the City’s history continues to open up opportunities and experiences that were previously not available to the community,” said Studer.
“To watch current Reds players like Joey Votto, Homer Baily, Jay Bruce, Arnoldis Chapman, Tony Cingrani and others is an experience that we are so pleased to provide. Great college games, a Major League team playing in downtown Pensacola, then onto another wonderful Wahoos season. It looks like 2014 is going to be a very special year, and we’re grateful to Reds organization and the Blue Wahoos sponsors and fans for making this game possible,” Studer continued.
The last time a Major League team played in Pensacola was April 3, 1958. The Chicago White Sox played the St. Louis Cardinals.

Northview To Name Football Stadium, Possibly For Tommy Weaver
September 9, 2013
Northview High School is considering naming their football stadium, possibly in memory of late teacher and coach Tommy Weaver.
The school has received an official request to name the stadium for Weaver, setting the naming process in motion. For a 30 day period, the school will accept suggestions from the community for potential stadium names. Any name change would then be considered by the Escambia County School Board.
Suggestions must be submitted by October 7 by email to bjohnson3@escambia.k12.fl.us.
Weaver was a longtime DCT and Ag instructor and assistant coach who passed away suddenly at the age of 61 in March 2012. The Chiefs’ entire 2012 state championship football season was dedicated to Weaver.

Northview Falls To 4A Marianna
September 7, 2013
The 4A Marianna Bulldogs defeated the Northview Chiefs 28-6 Friday night in Marianna.
The defending 1A state champion Chiefs were looking for revenge against the Marianna Bulldogs, but fell short of that goal. Last year in Bratt, Northview was up 42-26 in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs rallied for a tie in regulation and pulled out a 48-42 win over the Chiefs in OT.
Friday night’s 28-6 loss was just as disappointing, if not worse in a game that a started about 15 minutes late after the Chiefs’ charter bus broke down just shy of the Marianna exit.
“It was a tough loss,” Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said. “Marianna’s got a fine football team. They are very skilled. If their running backs are able to break that first line, they make it tough. Our tackles have got to continue to get better. We’ve got to break down, be in control and get more bodies to the ball.”
Also defensively he pointed to several problems the Chiefs had lining up correctly for the play.
Offensively, Wheatley said the Chiefs lacked consistency against the Bulldogs. “It would look like we had a little drive going, and we’d turn it over,” he said.
Overall, the Chiefs racked up just shy of 200 yards Friday night, 127 in the air and 70 on the ground. Running back Ladarius Thomas contributed 50 of those yards. The Chiefs’ only touchdown of the night was a 27-yard pass from quarterback Daulton Tullis to Cameron Newsome. Hunter Sherouse had nine tackles for Northview, while Emanuel Etheridge and Jeffery Taylor both had seven tackles.
The Northview Chiefs will be on the road again next week to take on the Chipley Tigers in another non-district game. The Chiefs rolled over Chipley 50-29 last year, but historically are 2-5 against the Tigers. In 2011, Northview lost a regular season game against Chipley only to face them again and lose to the Tigers in the state semifinal game.
The Chiefs won’t play a district game until they face Jay on October 4.
