Red Snapper Season Opening

September 24, 2013

The recreational harvest of red snapper will open Oct. 1 in state and federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In state waters, which are from shore to 9 nautical miles in the Gulf, the season will remain open through Oct. 21, closing on Oct. 22. In federal waters, which are from 9 nautical miles out to 200 nautical miles, the season will remain open through Oct. 14, closing on Oct. 15.

These supplemental recreational red snapper seasons are for 2013 only. The minimum size limit in state and federal waters is 16 inches, and the daily bag limit is two per harvester, per day. There is a zero daily bag and possession limit for captain and crew on for-hire vessels.

Anglers are required to use circle hooks and dehooking devices when fishing for any reef species, including red snapper, in Gulf of Mexico state and federal waters. The requirement to use venting tools in federal waters was removed on Sept. 3. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will consider adopting similar changes at a future meeting. The intent of these rules is to help conserve fishery resources by increasing the chances for a fish to survive after being caught and released.

The Tate Aggies celebrated homecoming with their third win in a row, a 35-0 shutout of West Gadsden in front of packed house Friday night.

The Aggies didn’t take long before pleasing the crowd. The Aggies scored on a 17- yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sawyer Smith to receiver Shane Tindall with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter. With time running out in the first, Jesse Fernadez powered up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown run. Tate held the lead at the end of first quarter, 14-0.

To begin the 2nd quarter, Tate blocked the Panthers’ punt to get the ball on the Panthers’ 10-yard line. Two plays later. Lavontia Samuel ran it in for a 8-yard touchdown with 11:00 to go in the second quarter for a 21-0 Tate lead. In the middle of the second quarter, Tate’s Trace Penton intercepted the Panthers’ pass to set up a 2- yard touchdown run by Samuel for a 28-0 Tate advantage.

It was in the fourth quarter before Tate was able to score again; this time on a 17-yard TD pass from q Smith to De-Vekyo Lewis. Kicker Dylan Mancuso was perfect for the night on extra points to make the score 35-0. West Gadsden was threatening with time running out, but Tate’s defense was able to hold them off to get the shutout.

After the game, Tate Coach Ronnie Douglas stated that it “was great for the defense to get a shutout”. He said that “they did their job all night and it paid off”.
Tate (3-1) faces Pine Forest (0-4) at Tate’s Pete Gindl Stadium at 7:30 next Friday.

UWF To Play Football At Maritime Park

September 19, 2013

The University of West Florida has reached an agreement to play football home games at the Community Maritime Park beginning in 2016. Home of the Blue Wahoos, the Maritime Park Stadium seats 5,100.

“This further strengthens the community’s ties to UWF by bringing these exciting games downtown to the Maritime Park Stadium,” said CMPA Chairman Collier Merrill. “The CMPA promised and delivered an award winning facility that can host multiple types of  events. Our hope is that UWF football at the Maritime Park Stadium continues the excitement we see downtown during the baseball season into the late summer and fall.”

Earlier this month, UWF President Judy Bense announced that UWF football will host its inaugural season in the fall of  2016. The addition of a football program is one part of the University’s larger goal to enhance student life, attract more students from across the state  and region and increase student retention, provide a more vibrant campus experience for students and alumni, increase school spirit, and expand sponsorship and other fundraising opportunities.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to play college football in such a beautiful setting  as the Maritime Park Stadium,” said UWF President Judy Bense. “We sincerely appreciate the partnership with Quint and Rishy Studer, The Blue Wahoos, the CMPA and  the City of Pensacola. Together we are adding vibrancy to the university and community, and building affinities that will last a lifetime.”

UWF will hire a head football coach in Spring 2014, who will start recruiting the first football student-athletes that fall. The inaugural recruiting class will be enrolled in Fall 2015 and begin practices and scrimmages in preparation for the inaugural season in Fall 2016.

UWF’s  long-term plan is for the team to play in a stadium built on campus, as described in the athletics facilities master plan. The athletics facilities master plan also calls for additional on campus practice facilities for the football team.
