Wahoos End Three Game Skid With Win Over Baybears

April 27, 2017

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos’ bats went missing for part of the five-game series against its arch-rival Mobile BayBears.

But in the final game Wednesday against Mobile, Pensacola’s bats came to life as they pulled off a, 5-3, victory over the BayBears at Hank Aaron Stadium. As a team, the Blue Wahoos lineup went a combined 11-35 for a .314 average.

In the first four games, Pensacola scored a total of four runs on 24 hits for a .183 team batting average.

Pensacola snapped its three-game skid with its offensive outburst. Leading the way at the plate for Pensacola was shortstop Blake Trahan, who went 2-5 and drove in two runs. Left fielder Leon Landry went 1-4 with a triple and had two RBIs. Designated Hitter Eric Jagielo was 4-5 and scored twice. Third baseman Taylor Sparks had a 1-4 day and scored a run.

Pensacola is batting .214 on the season for eighth best in the Southern League ahead of Mobile (.212) and Biloxi (.200).

Blue Wahoos starter Austin Ross kept Pensacola in the game. Ross didn’t allow a run in his past two starts. But his scoreless inning streak came to an end at 19.1 innings when Mobile scored in the second inning. He ended up pitching 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, walked two and struck out three. He picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 with a 0.99 ERA.

Jimmy Herget, Pensacola’s saves leader with eight saves, came in to pitch the ninth and allowed three singles to the first three batters he faced. Mobile scored a run when shortstop Alberto Triunfel singled to left field to drive in right fielder Forrest Allday, pulling the BayBears within, 5-3. With runners on first and second, Herget calmed down to strike out two of the next three batters to end the game.

Mobile scored first when catcher Wade Wass crossed the plate on first baseman’s Luis Tejada’s ground out to go ahead, 1-0, in the second inning.

In the fifth inning, Pensacola tied the score, 1-1, when center fielder Brian O’Grady scored on pinch hitter Leon Landry’s ground out to the pitcher.

Pensacola’s Trahan added two more runs in the sixth when his line drive single to left field scored Jagielo and Sparks for a 3-1 Blue Wahoos’ lead.

The BayBears pulled back within one run, 3-2, in the seventh inning when center fielder Michael Hermosillo hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score shortstop Angel Rosa.

Pensacola went back up, 4-2, in the eighth inning when Jagielo scored when Mobile right fielder Zach Welz made an error on O’Grady’s hit to him.

The Blue Wahoos added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning when left fielder Landry tripled in second baseman Josh VanMeter, who had walked, to go up, 5-2.

Pensacola now returns to Blue Wahoos Stadium Thursday for a five-game home stand against the Biloxi.

The Blue Wahoos lead the Southern League South Division with a 14-6 record and is ahead of Mobile (10-10) by four games.

Wahoos Drop Third In A Row To Mobile

April 26, 2017

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos lost its first five-game Southern League series of the year when the Mobile BayBears won, 3-0, Tuesday at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Mobile leads the series, 3-1, with the final game scheduled for 11:05 a.m. Wednesday.

Pensacola and Mobile have played an interesting series, to put it mildly, with each of the first three games decided by one run.

Tyler Mahle won the first game, 1-0, Saturday with a nine-inning perfect game — the first in 47 years in the Southern League. Mobile took the second game, 3-2, Sunday when it pushed across a run in the eighth inning. Pensacola and Mobile then battled in a 17-inning duel that the BayBears captured, 2-1, on a walk-off single by Zach Houchins.

In the fourth game Tuesday, the BayBears shutout Pensacola, which was the first time they failed to score this season.

It was also their third straight loss after winning a franchise record eight in a row. Pensacola fell to 13-6 on the season and Mobile is 10-9. The Blue Wahoos remain in first place in the Southern Division trailed by the BayBears, which is three games back.

Mobile scored one run in the second, third and fourth innings. In the second inning, Wade Wass double on a fly ball to center field that scored Andrew Daniel for a 1-0 lead. Alberto Triunfel then smashed his second homer of the year to left field to put the BayBears up, 2-0, in the third. It tacked on another run in the fourth to go ahead, 3-0, when Francisco Arcia scored on a wild pitch by Pensacola starter Deck McGuire.

The right-handed McGuire is now 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA. He worked six innings, allowed three runs on four hits, walked three and struck out four. Jake Ehret, who gave up the winning run in the 17th inning the night before, pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Mobile starter Jordan Kipper pitched seven scoreless innings to improve to 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out six. BayBears reliever Alex Klonowski earned his first save, despite walking two and striking out one in one inning of work.

Baybears Beat Wahoos 2-1 In 17 Innings

April 25, 2017

Playing in its longest game in team history, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos fell, 2-1, Monday when Mobile BayBears third baseman Zach Houchins hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded and no outs.

Mobile loaded the bases with no outs in the 17th inning at Hank Aaron Stadium when center fielder Zach Welz singled, right fielder Michael Hermosillo was hit by a pitch and DH Andrew Daniel reached first on a sacrifice bunt.

The BayBears have now won two straight games against Pensacola and leads the series between the arch-rivals, 2-1.

Pensacola reliever Jake Ehert took the loss and is 0-1 this season. It was a rare blown save for the Blue Wahoos bullpen, which leads the Southern League with 11 saves.

The Blue Wahoos had scored its first run in the 16th inning against Mobile BayBears to take a, 1-0, lead when right fielder Gabriel Guerrero lined a two-out single to left field to drive in shortstop Blake Trahan.

Guerrero was 0-6 Monday against his former team before driving in Trahan.

But Mobile came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game again, 1-1, when second baseman Hutton Moyer slapped a two-out grounder to right field to score Houchins. The 24-year-old Houchins was 3-8 in the game with a run scored and game-winning RBI.

The 17-inning game is the longest Pensacola has played in after going 16 innings in the 2016 and 2013 seasons.

The game went into extra innings with the score tied, 0-0. Pensacola had runners on first and third with two outs when Guerrero stepped to the plate and struck out on three pitches.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score. Pensacola was 3-12 with runners in scoring position and left 11 players on base. Meanwhile, Mobile was 2-17 with runners in scoring position and left 16 runners on base.

The loss wasted a second good start by Pensacola right-hander Keury Mella, who threw seven scoreless innings, allowed four hits, one walk and struck out four. He now has an 11-inning scoreless streak and lowered his ERA to 4.12 from a high of 10.80.

Mobile starter Grayson Long worked six scoreless innings and gave up just one hit, one walk and struck out four.

Pensacola still has the best record in the Southern League at 13-5 and leads second place Mobile, which is 9-9, by four games in the Southern Division.
