Pine Barren Road Accident Kills Local Man

Douglas Floyd, 31, of Walnut Hill was killed just after 8:30 Sunday night in a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Pine Barren Road and Highway 164.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say he was westbound on Highway 164 when a car driven by 23 year old Lindsay Cooper of Pensacola ran a stop sign on Pine Barren Road and hit Floyd’s vehicle, causing it to overturn.
Cooper and her passenger, Benny Campbell, age 30 of Brewton, both suffered minor injuries in the crash, according to the crash report.
No one in the accident was wearing a seatbelt, according to the FHP. The accident is still under investigation.
Oak Grove House Destroyed By Fire

Fire destroyed a house in the 3100 block of North Highway 99 in the Oak Grove community Sunday morning. Fire departments from Walnut Hill, Atmore, McDavid and Molino responded to the wood frame structure just after seven o’clock. The house was located on a heavily wooded lot and was fully involved when the first fire units arrived on scene.
There were no immediate reports of injury. The fire is under investigation.
Smoke from the fire was visible from miles away as the fire departments responded. The photo below (click to enlarge) was taken from the corner of Highway 99A and Highway 99, about one and half miles from the fire.
Domestic Shooting in Molino

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that took place about 9:00 Wednesday morning in Molino.
The shooting on Dewey Rose Lane just south of County Road 196. Authorities say 31 year old David Crockett was shot in the knee by his wife. Deputies say she had recently kicked him out of the house a few days ago because of marital problems, and he had been sleeping in vehicle in the yard.
Crockett forced his way into the house while his wife was in the shower. During the attack, she managed to get a gun and shoot Crockett in the knee. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Authorities say he will face a variety of charges, including battery, attempted sexual assault, false imprisonment and domestic violence. She was not charged.
The couple had been married about four months.
Hundreds Attend Bratt Fall Carnival

Hundreds of people attended the annual Bratt Elementary School Fall Carnival Friday afternoon at the school. The event featured popular games like the Duck Pond, Football Toss and the Cupcake Walk. Students redeemed prize tickets for hundreds of prizes.

Walnut Hill VFD Holds Fish Fry, Names Firefighter & Officer of Year

The annual Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry was held Saturday at the firehouse. Chief Robert Stewart (pictured above, click to enlarge) named the department’s firefighter and officer of the year.
Brian Rolin (pictured below, click to enlarge) was named the Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department Officer of the Year. Rolin has been with the department since 2004.
Phil Eubanks (pictured bottom left, click to enlarge) was named the department’s Firefighter of the Year. He has been with the department since 2002, and is currently training to be an EMT.
The fish fry is the volunteer department’s annual fund raiser. In addition to the food, the day offered prizes, a bounce house for the children and the opportunity to donate blood to the Northwest Florida Blood Center.
Blue Wahoos To Renovate Fields At Century’s Showalter Park

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will team with area businesses and organizations to renovate little league fields at Showalter Park in Century.
Planned improvements include an overhaul of the infield clay, painting of foul poles, weeding, mowing and trimming required to bring these fields into game-ready shape for the youth of the Century area.
The work is scheduled to take place Tuesday.

Barons Beat The Wahoos

The Blue Wahoos couldn’t cash in on a fast start as the Birmingham Barons came from behind to win Tuesday’s game 9-4.
It looked like a dream start for the hosts when they scored four runs in the second inning. With two men on base, Baron’s starter Jordan Guerrero mishandled a comebacker from Chadwick Tromp and his throw to second sailed into the outfield to allow Aristides Aquino to score. Taylor Sparks followed and blasted a three-run home run scoring Tromp and Luis Gonzalez, which gave the Wahoos a 4-0 lead. Sparks’s second homer of the season extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
But the lead was short-lived as the Barons punished a pair of defensive miscues and rallied for six runs in the top of the third inning. Jesus Reyes should have had a one-two-three inning, but fielding errors by Gonzalez and Shed Long allowed the inning continue. Zack Collins hit a bases-clearing double as part of his 2-for-4 night and later scored on Seby Zavala’s sac fly. When the dust settled, Jesus Reyes (L, 0-4) allowed six runs, but none were earned.
The Barons would scatter three more runs over the final six innings while the Wahoos offense was unable to string together another big rally. With the win, Birmingham captured the series with Wednesday’s game still in hand.
RHP Wyatt Strahan (2-1, 3.00) will take the hill in tomorrow’s series finale for the Wahoos and will be opposed by LHP Ian Clarkin.
