Lanes in the construction zone on Highway 29 in Century were scheduled to be shifted Wednesday.

Weather permitting, the northbound lanes of Highway 29 between Cottage Street and Jackson Street in Century will be transitioned to handle two-way traffic, with one lane in each direction. This temporary lane shift will allow crews to install a new box culvert on the west side of the roadway.

Coastal Materials of Alabama is doing $480,000 worth of drainage improvements on Highway 29 just south of the Alabama state line. Improvements will include installing box culverts, replacing existing sidewalks in the area, and constructing pedestrian railing. Motorists can expect intermittent lane shifts or restrictions through the completion of the project this spring.

Object Found Glowing In Woods Indentified As County Mosquito Trap

February 9, 2010

glowing11.jpg(Updated 2:00 p.m.) The  mystery object found with a light glowing in the woods in Bluff Springs late Monday night has been officially identified as a mosquito trap placed there by Escambia County.

“Escambia County Mosquito Control is using a carbon dioxide light trap for the purpose of collecting mosquitoes.  Most recently a trap was placed off of Dawson Road in Century.  These traps are randomly placed throughout the county to collect mosquitoes for identifying the breed and tracking the habitats,” said Sonya Daniel, Escambia County public information manager. “Light traps are placed out in the evening with a cooler of dry ice, which attracts the mosquitoes.  The trap and cooler are collected the next morning and mosquito control staff analyze the samples.”

The Century Station of Escambia Fire Rescue was first dispatched to an unknown type fire on Dawson Road just off of Bluff Springs Road about 10:15 p.m. When they arrived, they did not find a fire but what was described as some sort of electronic device with a light. Firefighters called the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office to the scene to investigate.

The object was described by authorities as having a battery powered light attached to a tree, and a rope or string leading from the light to a cooler. Deputies called narcotics investigators to the scene, thinking that the setup may have been related to illegal drugs. From the shoulder of Dawson Road, only a faint light could be seen glowing just off the ground a few feet into the woods.

Daniel said the public should not touch a or handle the equipment or cooler if they spot a mosquito light trap because the dry ice can burn skin.

Narcotics investigators were called to the scene to investigate a possible narcotics link, but the item was determined to be a mosquito light trap. NorthEscambia.com  photo, click to enlarge.

Olivia Bush, 6, had part of her brain removed Monday at Miami Children’s Hospital and is now recovering well, according to family members.

The North Escambia girl underwent the surgery to alleviate seizures that have plagued her since she was born as the second youngest premature baby to survive at Pensacola’s Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. During the surgery, doctors removed a 7 centimeter portion of her brain — basically taking out the bad, non-functioning portion and leaving behind the good, healthy tissue.

She was out of the six hour surgery by 2:40 Eastern time, and by  6:45 p.m., she was awake, talking and moving her arms and legs. By this morning, she will be moved out of pediatric intensive care and into a regular room, according to father Tad Bush.
