Photos: An Old Fashioned Canoe Christmas Celebration
December 9, 2011
It was an old fashioned Christmas celebration Thursday night as friends and neighbors came together with the Canoe Civic Club. The group sang Christmas carols, ate great food and just enjoyed spending time with friends and neighbors from Canoe, Bratt, Walnut Hill and surrounding areas in a celebration reminiscent of community gatherings from days gone by.
Longtime Canoe Civic Club member Caroline Conn (who is sometimes affectionately referred to as the mayor of Canoe, Alabama ) shared her thanks with club members for their friendship, support and labor of love for the club.
Mike Hanks from the First Baptist Church of Bratt led the crowd in Christmas carols as his wife Gayle Hanks played the piano, and a group from the Walnut Hill Mennonite Church treated the crowd to Christmas carols.

Century Woman Back In Jail In Grand Theft Auto, Drug Case
December 9, 2011
A Century woman serving 24 months probation after she was caught driving a stolen car with illegal drugs in her possession is back behind bars.
Iretha Mae Smith, age 58 of Ivey Street, was booked into the Escambia County Jail Thursday for violation of probation on charges of grand theft auto and felony possession of a controlled substance. She was given probation and adjudication was withheld after she pleaded no contest to the charges in May.
In early February, an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy watched as a white Mazda Protege failed to stop at a stop sign located at Sellers Road and West Highway 4. He conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and found that it had previously been reported stolen and that the driver, Smith, had an outstanding grand theft auto warrant.
When the deputy asked Smith to step out of the vehicle, she reportedly got out with a white pill in her hand. The pill, according to the Sheriff’s Office, turned out to be a Lortab for which Smith did not have a prescription.
‘America’s Most Wanted’ Child Molester Gets 130 Years
December 9, 2011
A man once featured on America’s Most Wanted was sentenced to 130 years in state prison for sexually molesting a child — in addition to a life sentence handed down earlier this year for sexual battery on a child.
Joseph Christian Fontana was convicted by a Santa Rosa County jury of committing various sexual acts on the 13-year old son of a woman he met at a church in 2001.
Fontana became a father figure to the child and later began to molest the boy. The crimes occurred between 2003 and 2006 at residences in Santa Rosa County where Fontana was doing work as a handyman.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation; however, Fontana fled from the country before being arrested. He was located after being featured on the television show “America’s Most Wanted”. After receiving a tip that Fontana was in the Dominican Republic, U.S. Marshals located and arrested him there in June 2009.
Fontana was previously designated as a sexual predator after his conviction in April 2011 and had remained in jail awaiting his trial on these charges. In 1995, Fontana was convicted in Pasco County, Florida, of handling and fondling a child and of a lewd and lascivious act in the presence of a child. He was convicted in California in 1988 of three counts of committing a lewd act upon a child. Fontana had been designated a sex offender at that time.
