Gulf Breeze Downs Northview

September 29, 2012

The 1A Northview Chiefs were outsized, outnumbered and outscored Friday night as they took on the 5A Gulf Breeze Dolphins. The Dolphins defeated the Chiefs 44-20 in Gulf Breeze, but Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said his Chiefs were never really outdone.

“I appreciate the way our kids fought; they fought to the end. They were a good football team tonight.” he said.

In the end, the outright advantages for the Dolphins proved to be just a little too much for the Chiefs.

“They controlled the line of scrimmage. They are big, and they are physical too. We knew they were, and we knew that we had our hands full,” he said.

The Northview Chiefs, ranked number one in the state in 1A, were the first to score with 10:11 on the clock in the first quarter. Stetson Nash returned an interception 40 yards and Kevin Vaughan split the uprights on the kick for a 7-0 lead for the Chiefs.

Gulf Breeze then scored in the first with a 10-yard run from Chandler Foxworth and a good kick, 7-7 headed into the second quarter.

The Dolphins increased their advantage to 21-7, but the Chiefs were not done in the first half. Northview made it 21-14 Gulf Breeze on a one yard touchdown from Roderick Woods and a good Vaughan kick headed into halftime.

Woods added a one-yard touchdown in the third. A missed kick from Vaughan left the Chiefs down by one, 21-20.

But the Dolphins found their momentum, cruising to a 44-20 win with touchdowns of 63 and 11 yards, a quarterback sack in the end zone and a recovered fumble in the end zone.

“I thought we fought; I don’t think we packed it in at all. We went 21-14 at half time and we nearly tied in the third quarter,” Wheatley said. “They got their momentum back, and we were not able to answer from there.”

The Northview Chiefs (2-2) will play their first district game of the season next Friday night as they host the Jay Royals.
