It’s a Tradition: Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere

Looking for a pumpkin? The Allen Memorial United Methodist Church Men’s Pumpkin Patch is open once again this year at the corner of Highway 29 and Neal Road. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes are available, with some priced as low as $1. The pumpkin patch is open daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Organizers said hundreds of pumpkins have been sold far this year.
The church’s Fourth Annual Fall Festival will be held at the pumpkin patch this Saturday, October 24 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be free activities for the children including visits from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit in the morning, the Cantonment Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, games, crafts and more. The Methodist Men group will be selling smoked turkey legs, pulled pork sandwiches and baked goods. Admission is free. Vendors are welcome; call Candace at (850) 525-7216 for information.

Molino Event To Mark 10th Anniversary Of Death Of Fallen Hero J.R. Spears

The 10th anniversary of the death of a local hero will be marked with a special event in Molino on Saturday.
Cpl. Jonathan Ross “J.R.” Spears (USMC) was killed in action, Ramadi, Iraq, on October 23, 2005.
Spears, the son of Tim Spears and the late Marie Spears, grew up in Molino. He spent many years playing baseball at Don Sutton Ballpark in Molino. He was a 2002 graduate of Tate High School, where he played football. His number 62 jersey was retired by the school to honor their former lineman.
“He was very determined to be a United States Marine. After losing over 80 poounds and passing boot camp, he did it. The proudest moments of his life were in his dress blues. He wanted nothing more than to protect his country, and he gave his life doing so,” his father Tim said.
The event Saturday will begin at 2 p.m. at Don Sutton Ballpark in Molino. Food and drinks will be provided. There will be a few speakers on behalf of J.R. Spears and the entire Spears family. The event will conclude with a release of balloons to honor Spears, other fallen heroes and those still fighting for freedom.
The event is free and open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Donations for Cpl. J.R. Spears Memorial Scholarship Fund will be accepted.

Have ‘Coffee With A Cop’ This Week In Century

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office will host a Coffee With a Cop event this Thursday morning at the Southern Panhandle restaurant in Century.
The Coffee with a Cop event provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about what the ESCO is doing in their neighborhood.
“We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our deputies,” said Sheriff David Morgan. “These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.”
Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments, sheriff’s offices, and state police forces strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between law enforcement and community members one cup of coffee at a time.
Coffee with a Cop will be held Thursday, October 22 at 7 a.m. at the Southern Panhandle restaurant at 8420 North Century Boulevard.

Webster Graduates From Boot Camp

PFC Tyler James Webster, 19, of Pensacola graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on recently.
PFC Webster successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD Parris Island as one of 86 recruits in Training Platoon Fox 1074. Following 10 days of leave he will report to Camp Geiger/ Camp Lejeune, NC, for two months at Infantry Training Battalion then Military Occupation Specialty School.
PFC Webster is a 2015 graduate of J.M. Tate High School, a member of St. Mathew Anglican Church, an Eagle Scout and assistant scout master with St. Luke United Methodist Church. His proud family includes his parents Alex and Lori Webster, and younger brother Aidan Webster of Pensacola, and his grandparents Talbot and Deborah Rodrigue of Pensacola, and William C. and Eileen Webster of Cantonment.
Bratt Elementary Students Learn About Fire Safety

Reimagine Flomaton Planning Begins

The organizational volunteer meeting for Reimagine Flomaton was held Thursday night at the Flomaton Fire Department.
Reimagine Flomaton will be held Saturday, February 20, 2016. Reimagine has held similar events in Century, Brownsville, Warrrington, Thomaston, GA, Santa Rosa County and Peru. Events have included clothing giveaways, free haircuts, free food, free health checks and displays from community organizations.

Fields Of Faith: Community Worship Service Held

The Northview High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) sponsored a student led worship event “Fields of Faith” Wednesday night in the Tommy Weaver Memorial Stadium.
The service included music, student testimonies and a message from guest speaker Jody Levins, a youth leader at Ray’s Chapel Baptist Church in Bogia.

Local High School Bands Shine At Marching Performance Assessments

District 1 High School Marching MPA performances were held Saturday at Tate High School.
Several bands, including the Royal Pride Band from Jay High and the Showband of the South from Tate, earned straight superiors.

Camp Fire Kids Hold Trike-A-Thon For Children’s Hospital

The children at Camp Fire USA Century Youth Learning Center recently held their seventh annual Trike-A-Thon in support of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital last week. The children not only raised money for St. Jude; they also learned about trike safety and the importance of helping others.
