2013 Season Begins At The Market At Saint Monica’s

The Market at Saint Monica’s kicked off its third season Saturday in the parking lot of Saint Monica’s Episcopal Church on Highway 95A in Cantonment.
Multiple vendors were on hand, plus there was a smoked pulled pork barbecue fundraiser and children’s activities.
The Market at Saint Monica’s is held on the first and third Saturdays of each month. For more information about Market’s vendors, special events, or schedule, visit www.st-monicas.org/market.html.

National Day Of Prayer Observed In Century, Atmore

From iPads and iPhones, to the tattered and torn pages of cherished family Bibles, participants in a National Day of Prayer event in Atmore read the entire Bible aloud in just 30 minutes Thursday evening.
In Atmore, the threat of rain from the heavens pushed about 300 National Day of Prayer participants from a local park into the gym at Escambia County High School. Community, business and spiritual leaders led those gathered in prayer before the annual Bible reading.
In Century, community leaders gathered in prayer, asking for God’s favor on their town, surrounding communities and the nation.

Holland Awarded First Tommy Weaver Memorial Scholarship

Northview High School Senior Ariel Holland has been awarded the first Tommy Weaver Memorial Scholarship.
She will receive $500 upon enrollment in college. Applicants were required to fill out a brief application and write an essay explaining why the scholarship was important to them and how it would make it possible for them to continue their education.
Holland was awarded the scholarship Tuesday evening during the annual Northview DCT banquet.
The scholarship fund was established in memory of Tommy Weaver, DCT/Ag instructor and assistant coach who passed away in March 2012.
United Way Recognizes Campaign Contributors, Including Northview, Ransom

United Way of Escambia County is celebrating the results of this year’s annual workplace campaign, which raised $2,397,518 to impact those in need in the area.
“I never cease to be amazed at our community’s generosity,” says Andrea Krieger, United Way’s President/CEO. “Escambia residents who chose to live united will change the world for many of our community’s most vulnerable citizens.”
Two North Escambia schools — Northview High and Ransom Middle — were among those recognized for their successful United Way campaigns. Northview’s giving was up 52-percent over last year, while Ransom’s giving increased by 60-percent.
Last year’s campaign enabled United Way to partner with 35 agencies and nearly 2,000 volunteers to help serve more than 200,000 people. With increased donations, United Way hopes to serve even more this year.

Learn About Living With Snakes With Program In Century, Molino

Snakes are common animals in the North Escambia area, consuming pests that can be expensive for humans to manage while providing a service to home environments.
The Escambia Extension Service will hold a free program at three locations to discuss the natural history of snakes, to reduce the chance of a snake encounter and how to properly handle a potential snake encounter.
The programs will be held at:
- Agriculture Building on Highway 4, Century, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
- Molino Community Center, 6450 Highway 95A, Molino on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Book Sale Nets Profits For Friends

The annual Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale was held this weekend in the new downtown library. The sale included books of all kinds – hard cover, soft cover and paperback – along with CD’s, DVD’s, magazines and puzzles.
All proceeds from the used book sale benefit West Florida Public Library system.

Hinote, Patterson To Wed

Austin Derek Patterson and Summer Sheree Hinote, both of Flomaton, are pleased to announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Greg and Kelley Hinote of Flomaton and the granddaughter of C. J. and Erline Boutwell of Flomaton, Rita Hinote of Brewton, and Alfred Hinote of Arkansas. Summer is a 2010 graduate of Flomaton High School and is pursuing a dual degree in elementary education and special education at the University of West Florida.
The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clint Patterson of Flomaton, and the grandson of Darlene Adams and the late Thomas Adams, Jr. of Flomaton, Dr. Larry and Wanda Patterson, of Bay Minette. He is the great-grandson of Thomas Adams, Sr. Austin is a 2012 graduate of Flomaton High School and a graduate of Jefferson Davis Community College’s air conditioning and refrigeration technical program. He is currently employed with Parker & Sons, Inc.
The couple will exchange vows on May 4, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at Little Escambia Baptist Church in Flomaton. All family and friends are invited to attend.
Field Day: Molino Park Teachers Take On The Marines – And Win

Friday was the annual Field Day at Molino Park Elementary School.
During the event, teachers, staff and volunteers teamed up to take on a group of U.S. Marines in tug-o-war. When the dust settled, the Molino Park team was victorious. (Although several youngsters theorized that perhaps the Marines had let the MPES staffers and volunteers win.)
