Fallen Law Officers Honored

Fallen offices were honored across Florida this week.
Fifteen Escambia County deputies have died in the line of duty — the first in 1923 and the most recent, Lt. George Hura, Jr., in 2004. A memorial service honoring them was held Wednesday, with roses placed on a law enforcement memorial (top photo).
Santa Rosa County honored fallen officers on Tuesday (pictured left).
And Secretary Julie Jones and members of the Florida Department of Corrections (DOC) leadership team Wednesday honored fallen correctional officers and employees during a wreath laying ceremony at Wakulla Correctional Institution (pictured below). “Each day thousands of brave men and women put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of Florida families,” Secretary Jones said. “Today, and every day, we honor and remember the bravery of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the State of Florida.”

Northview FFA Names New Officer Team

Softball Baby Gender Reveal: The Pitch Is Good…It’s A Girl!

A single softball pitch and an explosion of pink made Mother’s Day extra special for mom-to-be Ali Martin of Bratt.
Ali and boyfriend Marshall Rolin are expecting a baby in mid-October. The couple picked a gender reveal that was a bit different than most — an “exploding” softball filled with colored chalk. Both love softball, and decided that it would be a home run way to answer the big boy or girl question.
Neither knew the gender..Ali was given a sealed envelope by the ultrasound tech last Wednesday. She made two softballs, one filled with blue chalk, the other with pink. They looked exactly the same, so she placed them in bags with a note labeling which was which.
Sunday at the ballpark, Ali’s cousin Sydney McGhee went to her car, opened the envelope and picked the correct softball to be pitched before family and friends. No one else knew before the pitch.
“I was really nervous about pitching it,” she said. Ali wound up and pitched it to Marshall, who slammed the ball into an explosion of pink.
“I’m extremely excited about it,” she said Sunday night, now knowing that she has a little girl on the way. “Now that we know the gender and everything, I am so excited for the big day.”
The couple has not yet picked a name for their little girl, but they already know they’d like her to have the initials “MJR”. Marshall, his mom, his dad and his two brothers all share the initials “MJR”.
“I just pray that I can be the best mom to my sweet little girl and give her everything she deserves and even more,” Ali said. “My heart is so full of happiness and love, that I can’t imagine how I will feel when the big day is finally here. I am so ready for it.”

Local Scouts Volunteer At Horse Rescue

School For Learning Disabled May Expand To Century

There could be a new school in Century’s future, and area residents had the opportunity to learn more about it during a free lunch on Saturday.
East Hill Academy operates schools for children with learning disabilities in Pensacola and Milton. They have entered the Century Business Challenge, which will provide $25,000 in startup cash and a location, in hope of opening a similar academy in Century to serve the North Escambia area.
East Hill Academy is a private non-profit organization providing educational services to children (grades 1-12) with Autism and other related disorders. The school seeks to help students succeed when otherwise their learning disabilities make it impractical to place them in a regular school setting. East Hill currently serves about 60 students.
“The teaching philosophy of EHA is based on the belief that education should be designed to encourage each student’s unique potential and character. The learning experience should be structured, supportive and participatory. The school environment should be a dynamic and nurturing place of learning, where respect is a part of the educational process,” according to the school’s website.
The meeting concerning the possible “Century Academy School” was held Saturday.

Atmore Marks National Day Of Prayer
May 8, 2015
Atmore marked the National Day of Prayer Thursday with several events, drawing the faithful and pastors from Alabama and Florida. A prayer walk was held at Atmore City Hall, followed by prayer at the Veterans Memorial. A community prayer service was held Thursday afternoon in the Cornell Torrence Gym at Escambia County High School.

Tate High School Veterinary Academy Students Film Commercial At Horse Rescue
May 8, 2015
Tate High School Veterinary Academy students visited Cantonment horse rescue group Panhandle Equine Rescue Thursday. Their task was to shoot a commercial advertising their mobile vet services.
The commercial, as planned, will show the students driving up, introducing themselves to their clients and examining a horse. PER’s “Glitter” had the starring horse role in the video.
“Dr. Donny examined her blind eye and then informed his client that she was blind. They should get a good grade on this,” said PER President Diane Lowery.
