School For Learning Disabled May Expand To Century

There could be a new school in Century’s future, and area residents had the opportunity to learn more about it during a free lunch on Saturday.
East Hill Academy operates schools for children with learning disabilities in Pensacola and Milton. They have entered the Century Business Challenge, which will provide $25,000 in startup cash and a location, in hope of opening a similar academy in Century to serve the North Escambia area.
East Hill Academy is a private non-profit organization providing educational services to children (grades 1-12) with Autism and other related disorders. The school seeks to help students succeed when otherwise their learning disabilities make it impractical to place them in a regular school setting. East Hill currently serves about 60 students.
“The teaching philosophy of EHA is based on the belief that education should be designed to encourage each student’s unique potential and character. The learning experience should be structured, supportive and participatory. The school environment should be a dynamic and nurturing place of learning, where respect is a part of the educational process,” according to the school’s website.
The meeting concerning the possible “Century Academy School” was held Saturday.

Atmore Marks National Day Of Prayer

Atmore marked the National Day of Prayer Thursday with several events, drawing the faithful and pastors from Alabama and Florida. A prayer walk was held at Atmore City Hall, followed by prayer at the Veterans Memorial. A community prayer service was held Thursday afternoon in the Cornell Torrence Gym at Escambia County High School.

Tate High School Veterinary Academy Students Film Commercial At Horse Rescue

Tate High School Veterinary Academy students visited Cantonment horse rescue group Panhandle Equine Rescue Thursday. Their task was to shoot a commercial advertising their mobile vet services.
The commercial, as planned, will show the students driving up, introducing themselves to their clients and examining a horse. PER’s “Glitter” had the starring horse role in the video.
“Dr. Donny examined her blind eye and then informed his client that she was blind. They should get a good grade on this,” said PER President Diane Lowery.

Northview’s FFA Receives Multiple Top State Awards

The Northview High School FFA has been named as one of Florida’s Finest FFA Chapters, and the chapter’s “Fresh From Florida Advocacy Program” has been named one of the top five programs in the state.
The selection of Florida’s Finest FFA Chapters is based upon the completion of the National Chapter Award program application. These chapters have excelled in the areas of student, chapter and community development and have worked hard to fulfill the mission of the FFA.
One member and one advisor from each of these chapters will be recognized on the main stage during the 2nd General Session of the 87th Florida FFA Convention on Wednesday, July 1 in Orlando. In addition, each of these chapters will represent Florida at the national level in the National Chapter Award Program.
Formerly known the Food for America program, the Fresh from Florida Advocacy Program is designed to encourage FFA members to participate in agricultural literacy and awareness projects on the local level.
The annual program, conducted by the Northview FFA in March, gave over 1,000 students a chance to learn about agriculture firsthand as they got up close and personal with farm animals, farm equipment and more. The students even had the opportunity to make their own butter and enjoy it on crackers.
The Northview High School FFA “Fresh From Florida” program has been honored as the best in Florida for three consecutive years, and the chapter was recently name one of the best in the United States by the National FFA Organization for a second year.

National Day Of Prayer Event Held In Molino

Thursday was the National Day of Prayer.
Several churches from Century to Cantonment got an early start with a prayer program Wednesday evening at the Don Sutton Ballpark in Molino. A large crowd heard uplifting Christian music, heard testimonies from local residents and prayed on numerous topics, including prayer for our nation.

Byrneville Elementary 5th Graders ‘On Trial’

Fifth grade students from Byrneville Elementary School had the opportunity to visit the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Center on Wednesday. Students were able to sit in on a trial, tour the facility and learn about the judicial process. Afterwards, they were able to attend a Blue Wahoos baseball game. Letter Carriers Plan Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

On Saturday, letter carriers will join forces to help Stamp Out Hunger in our community. In its 23rd year, the annual food drive has grown to be the largest national single-day effort that benefits millions of Americans who struggle to put food on the table.
Residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag of non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to their regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 9. Escambia and Santa Rosa letter carriers will collect food donations for local food banks including the Bay Area Food Bank and Manna Food Pantries. Last year, organizations received a total of 159,625 pounds of food from the community during the food drive.
“This is a critical food drive because it comes at a time when donations are typically low and the need has increased,” said DeDe Flounlacker, Manna Food Pantries’ executive director. “During the school year, many children get a healthy meal through the free or reduced breakfast and lunch programs. During the summer, those programs aren’t available. The generous donations from the community allow us to provide nutritious food to hungry families and children throughout the summer months.”
